My hope is you are right. But from the horse's mouth, there may be problems with that thinking. I keep hoping there is a way around it. We shall see once they are actually implemented next week.

I hope that there's a work around too.
My question is will the patch make it so that I will not be able to load up any of my old save files or it just means I can't earn trophies with them?
The way it's worded makes it sound like any old save file is unusable period. Maybe someone at Nisa should clarify it a bit.

I'm 95% certain that old saves can still be loaded, they just can't earn trophies (and even then, I think they can earn trophies whose objectives are not yet cleared - there's simply no "retroactive" awarding of trophies).

Either whoever wrote that press release needs to get their facts straight, or whoever localized the patch needs to be fired so someone competent can be brought in.
The Japanese version required only that you save your game and reload to begin earning trophies, no new game required. If the US version patch is any different, heads will roll.

Using a little deductive reasoning (my favorite type of reasoning!!!) SpaceDrake's 95% conclusion is a likely one.
Yeah, that press release is poorly worded so it's best to take their statements lightly and rely on your experience with the Disgaea 3 patches as of date, which is this, simply:
They've added a lot of new features to the game via patching, and we've never had our save files rendered unusable. The save files update with the patch and the players are able to take advantage of new features thusly.
It's most reasonable that you would be able to use your current save to earn the trophies. I think what they meant by the 'D3 didn't support trophies and you have to start over' is referring to the lack of retroactive awarding of trophies, because of course the game wouldn't randomly be tracking strange events that the players have been doing like max damage or completing Item World in one go. Get my drift?
Well, there were a few games that originally did not support trophies but had them implemented later on, like Grand Theft Auto IV. I don't have this game or any that fall under the aforementioned category, so how did these games work when trophies were implemented? You didn't have to start over from scratch, did you?
In the case that I'm wrong, it would suck greatly, but if you can still use your file after the patch it's guaranteed that trophies will work (logically), and a patch hasn't broken save files before, right?
P.S. Have a little heart, louiecog, you've been lamenting over this in multiple threads here (so it certainly does upset you greatly) but if you think over things rationally (a hobby of mine) the outcome here seems a bit brighter.

There are no guarantees when you change the data that is being tracked with the save files that old save files will still work. There are plenty of examples of this in PC games, where they've been patching games much longer than they have with console games. Even wildly popular games, like Half-Life, have broken save files with patches.
That being said, there's really no way to know until the patch is available. Chances are pretty good that the behavior will be similar to the Japanese version of the same patch.

Unfortunately, you DO have to start GTA over to get them. Thats the entire reason my boyfriend hasn't started that over- and hasn't started Disgaea 3. He wanted to have a go at the trophies in this..and hes pretty disappointed with GTA :\

I really but really hope... for my actual saved data to be instant after the patch or I will seriously piss at NISA for they poorly programming skill.
After all my invest hours on Disgaea 3 just to receive such a hit on my face, it insulting if you ask me.
Well, they better don't ruin my saved data or any form.

Oh well, they're just trophies.
I don't really care much for them anyway since they're just useless titles. I just wanted them so other people (like in Home) know that I play Disgaea 3, and an empty trophy list can do that.

but if you download the patch you can't play your saved games.... least that is what i thought it said. which sucks btw i would rather be able to keep playing where i am and get trophies
