Re: Sakura Wars
I am EXCITED. I have literally been waiting half of my life for a Sakura Taisen title to come out over here, and--wouldn't ya know it, it's my favorite game localization company bringing it over! I wish I knew what crazy, impossible stunt NISA had to pull to get to do this game. From the darkness of over a decade, a new challenger emerges to conquer the microscopic American dating sim/mecha SRPG market!
I'm excited beyond words--over at the forums I go to, selectbutton.net, I wrote a piece that I'd link to if it wasn't covered in swears, where I attempted to get even one percent of the hype I have for this game across. The younger generation might not understand it, but if you were like me and grew up in an age without Internet access, where all your news came from actual paper magazines, and you used to dream what Sakura Taisen 1 on the Sega Saturn was like as you stared at a thumbnail-sized screenshot next to a blurb of text in a gaming mag, and a little more than a decade later you're about to finally play Sakura Taisen 5 yourself, well--you get excited :-D
It's weird, but back as a kid the idea of talking to girls in a game really excited me, but nowadays that's old hat, and now it's the idea of steampunk robots battling in an SRPG set in alternate universe 1930s New York that excites me. Maybe I'm getting old, I dunno.
Anyway NISA is amazing and they're probably capable of anything at this point. Legendary PR Lady Nao Zook and Mysterious Masked Guy Jack Niida are gonna line up Super Robot Wars or something at this rate, just to prove how awesome they are, I bet. After that, they'll localize Japan, the entire country, all of it, and then NISA will ascend to a higher plane of existence, to rule over Geek Valhalla.

Re: Sakura Wars
I'm, well, not quite sure I'd go that far but this is rather exciting.

Re: Sakura Wars
Will buy for Wii as soon as someone plays it all the way through and confirms no huge bugs.
With all due respect, I dont want Idea Factory anywhere near this.

I want to say, "I'll match that and raise you some," but after reading this I'm not sure it's possible.
BTW I loved your piece on Chaos Wars.

A tell-all book should be the preorder bonus.

Same. Don't worry though, I'll happily volunteer to be the guinea pig by taking off work and plowing through the Wii version in the first 2 days. (Seriously, I have to update my guide for the wii.)

Thanks! That site there is a fairly hardcore set, but unfortunately they tend to discount a lot of games with anime aesthetics as being "too anime", and therefore miss out on a lot of the best/worst that the game industry has to offer. It's good to see that at least one other person "gets" what I write over there.

Re: Sakura Wars
For anyone unfamiliar, here is a very down-to-earth explanation about what makes Sakura Wars special:

Re: Sakura Wars
They couldn't have handled this situation any better. Here's hoping they get some good voices for the english dub. I just wonder if the same save file works on both discs (I assume they will).

And what better way is there to burn off excess energy than to throw together a box art mockup?

http://www.411mania.com/games/features/109726/Anime-Expo:-NIS-America-Talks-About-Its-Upcoming-Games-and-the-Localization-Process.htm
quote: With regards to Sakura Wars, I know you're releasing the fifth one first. If this does well, will you go back and do a remake of the first ones?
Jack Niida: That's definitely a possibility. We're releasing Sakura Wars V first because we figured it's the last version that came out and it's obviously the most polished, at least battle system-wise. And it's something that's easier for Sony [to] accept and release a game like [Sakura Wars V], because previously Sony didn't like games that had dating sim aspects. They thought it might not be a suitable game for the PlayStation brand but they're actually happy about Sakura Wars now ever since they saw the actual game. So, if this one does well I think we'll be able to bring out all the various others - Sakura Wars IV and III and... I don't know about II and I. Yeah, hopefully we can bring out all the other games too.
NISA, if it makes a difference, the two prequels that fans are clamoring for (after this) are Sakura Taisen 1 Atsuki Chishio Ni (a remake for PS2) and 3 (originally on DC, then ported to PS2 and PC). 3 is the undisputed climax of the series, but the middle third of the game featured a ton of cameos from 1 (&2). 2 was never remade with the 3D ARMS battle system, while 4 was short and had lower production values. 5 "Episode 0" (the direct prequel to SLML)... others don't seem as fond of it as I was. Maybe E-0's gameplay would be more interesting with Wii MotionPlus? I dunno.
Re: the boxart, there are around 4 illustrations NISA could use. They all look nice and it'd be tough to go wrong.
