Booya! I love words with native origins, even though they usually get totally mangled so non-natives can pronounce them.

After much practice, I can correctly pronounce the real name of the native people who live in my area. emoticon

I like Chinook, the name of a warm wind that sweeps over the plains from the Rocky Mountains. Chinook is also the name of a trade language that originated between different native groups who spoke totally different languages. I think white traders learned it later too. How cool is that!? :}

Chinook is not a dead language either, I have known friends and read books writen by folks who know how to speak it...the NW is soooo cool that way.

Re: Favourite Words

Chinook is dead?!?!?!?!??!?

waht are you talking about!!!!!

Chinook is the biggest type of Pacific Salmon.

Scientific name Onchorhincus Tsatchswa, it is on the endangered species list and is a very beautiful creature.

I actually like Coho Salmon (Onchorhincus Kisutch) better because their spawning colors are prettier.

For a full explanation on the Salmon Lifecycle, please e-mail me at klatukatt@aol.com.

You said Chinook in front of the right (or wrong) person.

ANYWAY, my favorite word is OMNISCIENT because it describes me perfectly.

Cool Katt, I love fish! But I meant Chinook as in the trade language, not the (delicious) salmon.

Though it is technically a dead language, I believe some people still learn if for cultural or academic reasons. Or because it rocks.

I like words that originate in other languages, like Zoccalo! (Who else is a Babylon 5 geek here. emoticon )

Too weird....When I was little I would go with a friend of mine to the dairy, The Umpqua Dairy, where his dad worked and we'd get free stuff like little icecream cups, chocolate milk, yummy! emoticon

We are HUGE milk drinkers in our family and Umpqua milk is the BEST (Since all milk is regional this really can apply) I've tried milk from about 35 different regions around the country....Umpqua is special...When I was little they still use to drop off the milk in the morning on our front doorstep....sigh....Ok, I'm feeling ancient now! emoticon

Yes, I'd have to agree with you, Umpqua *is* the best milk I've ever tasted. I didn't fully appreciate it last year, when it was in easy supply in the campus "grocery store". Boy do I miss it now...stuck drinking Safeway's crap...only way I can stomach it is to apply liberal amounts of Nesquick...I think that's how they spell it now...maybe not. >_< But I'm home now and the milk here is yummy.

Hurray for off-topicness. o_O

Erm...Milk. Yes, I like the word...Milk.

*flees the wrath of Nurv*

lol! emoticon

Milk is a great word. I didn't pronounce it properly for a while though. I used to say "malk" instead if "milk".

Kilometer is another great word, and I now pronounce it properly too. The emphasis is on the "lo", not the "ki".

Did I mention that I love the word percolate.

Suddenly, someone raised their glass in a toast with PERCOLATED UTTER-JUICE . . . and there was much screaming and gnashing of teeth . . . for they had none . . . for the great utters of the umpqua had utterly vanished!

Utter Inspectors have been called.
