Reading and Books

Inspired by a few off topic osts in the "Favurite Words" thread I decided to start a thread on Reading and Books. Do you find reading easy or not. Who's your favourite author and what are you favourite books?

My favourite author is Tolkien, favourite book is LotR or the Silmarillion. I love reading. I'll post some of my other favourite books later.

I love the title... yes, you do usually read books. emoticon j/k I know what you mean. *quells inner MSTer* emoticon

I find reading in English quite easy usually. My French isn't good enough to read a book at my age level. (Like, I could read one written for French 8 years-olds, so I might not find the topic so engaging.) That was my problem in school, but now that my French is so out of practice maybe I would struggle to read easy books too.

I don't do so well with classic books though, though I really enjoyed "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley, and "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding.

Re: Reading and Books

I read mostly english litteture. During the year I´ve collected quite a few books on sailing ships of the nineteenth century and books about sailing ships and sailing from the beginning to the present.

I'm also very interested in history and am now collecting books about the British Empire. Am also buying books about Europe from the first millenia to the second, the finish eastern border.

Other books I read are Clive Cussler's, Dale Brown's, Peter O'Donnell's, Tolkien's (of course), will try to read my Terry Brooks-collection from High King of S. to part three of Journey.

Ian Slater's wwIII-series I'm about halfway through (will recommence it anytime soon).

And will definitely finish off part two of Churchill's A history of english speaking peoples-quartet.

And then I got a multitude of books which I haven't read yet. (as can be seen in my booklist on my site)

Hmm, I feel like a rather low-class ignoramous, because while I do enjoy Tolkein's work a great deal, I don't care for much of anything that can be termed "classic literature", because I tend to find that rather dry and boring...

I love fantasy the best - The Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy by Tad Williams is something I'd reccomend to anyone. I also adore science-fiction, especially Anne McCaffery, Andre Norton, and Alan Dean Foster.

Oh, yes, Harry Potter. Gotta love Harry Potter. ^_^

I had to read Huxley's Brave New World for my Senior English class...that sucked whatever joy I may have found in reading it right out, so I'm left with a rather bitter memory of that particular book. ;_; Damn you, high-school English!

Re: Reading and Books

My all-time favourite book is "Musashi" by Eiji Yoshikawa. It's often described as being like Shogun, except it really could have hapenned. It's very historically accurate. I believe it was written in the 19th century, and it's set in the early 17th century.

It is about the samurai Miyamoto Musashi, who was a real person. The book describes his youth, and his invention of the two-sword style, among other things. It has good lessons for martial artists and for life in general.

The book is very rich, and the characters (most of whom were real people, notably the monk Takuan Soho) are complex and rich. Even the villans have likable aspect, like the fearsome and relentless Osugi Honiden. You like her more as the book progresses. Matahatchi (her son), Otsu (Matahatchi's betrothed, who he abandons, and who is in love with Musashi) and Akemi are all very interesting characters. My favourite character is Jotaro, and he definitely does not get enough 'screen' time. But this is a book about Musashi's adventures, starting with the Battle of Sekigahara (which took place 1600 AD if I recall correctly).

It's very long but well-worth reading! Yoshikawa describes Japan so vividly, you can almost understand this wonderful land, though the time and culture are very different. It is an increbibly beautiful book.

I've read it twice and it's time I read it again. This book is very personal to me because I started reading it while studying for my black-belt exam. It helps put everything in perspective.

Maybe if you read a good book you could review it in here. Say things like main characters and the plot but don't give anything major away.

Yeah, good idea Telcontar. Imagine giving away the end when reviewing an Agatha Christie book... emoticon Might kinda defeat the purpose. emoticon

I gave my favourite book a mini-review above. emoticon
