Re: Reading and Books

I just started reading "The Cantabury Tales", has anyone else read it?

The one I have is a selection (probably just as well, there are 29 pilgrims), but I was a bit disappointed to see that the Squire and the Ploughman didn't make the cut. However, those that did look quite interesting.

What books did everyone get for Christmas? I got several Tolkien ones and an Arthurian legends one.

They are proud and wilful, but they are true-hearted, generous in thought and deed: bold but not cruel; wise but unlearned, writing no books but singing many songs after the manner of children of Men before the Dark Years.

One of my best friends gave me The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories by Tim Burton...it's rather...erm....melancholy. XD

I also got Expect the Unexpected (Or You Won't Find It by Roger von Oech from my grandparents. Haven't read that one yet, but it looks to be interesting.

Thirdly I got a $25 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble, so I have no idea what I'm going to get next. ^__^

Which books? Especially, which Arthurian legend? (There are so many, it's interesting to see if you and your pal have read the same ones.)

Hey Gundam, you could put the $25 towards a one book volume of LOTR... emoticon Not that I really want one or anything... emoticon

If you haven't already read these ones, I personally recommend the following Arthurian Legends:

Stephen R. Lawhead's 'The Pendragon Cycle':
1. Taliesin
2. Merlin
3. Arthur (My favourite Arthurian legend of all time!)
4. Pendragon
5. Grail

Gerald Morris' five book series:
1. The Squire's Tale
2. The Squire, His Knight, and His Lady
3. The Savage Damself and the Dwarf
4. Parsifal's Page
5. The Ballad of Sir Dinadan

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I did get a book for Christmas:

Trees: An illustrated identifier and encyclopedia, by Tony Russel and Catherine Cutter

(unfortunately it doesn't have Pinus strobus but it is a really cool book.)

Talesin is the one I got. Tolkienwise I got History of Middle-Earth 10, 11 and 12. Characters of Tolkien, Tree and Leafe, Tales form the Perilous Realm, The Letters of JRR Tolkien and a one volume edition of LotR.

My step-daughter, bless her soul, gave me a dozen new harliquin romance novelets . . . I mean really now, come on! Do I really seem like the type to enjoy such filth, such debauchory, such....wait a tick, gorgeous cover shot on that one, ohhh, steamy scene on the edge of a cliff....PSYC!

*vomits all over books upon trying to read back cover...*

I'd never ever ever tell her that I didn't appreciate the books, though. It would kill me to ever hurt her feelings...

Just had to whine to someone, all better now. emoticon

I LOVE that book. You completely have to read the entire Pendragon Cycle, it is AWESOME. "Arthur" is my favourite. The scene where Arthur, Cai, and the other warriors defeat Morcant and Cerdic is the funniest scene in any Arthurian legend I have ever read. You'll know it when you get there. emoticon emoticon

I once read "It Happened in Texas"... *s****s*

It was very entertaining, but probably not for the reasons the author intended. emoticon

I'd be inclined to agree with you there, Nurv. I think a lot of romance authors take themselves seriously...sadly, they don't realize that the kick people are getting from reading their stuff is not the kind they had intended...tee hee. XD *I* could write trashy romance...and it'd be hilarious. *nodnod* emoticon
