Apparently Douglas Adams met some woman who was dying in the hospital, and she had a towel with her...she said she'd be okay as long as she had her towel...That embarassed the heck out of him, that someone took his story seriously enough to find nothing odd about having a towel. ^^;;

That's not where the towel thing comes from. That's just another one of those touchy spam "keep your fork" e-mails.
Douglas Adams got his towel idea from when he went on vacation he would always be the one who couldn't find his towel when they were ready to go to the beach. His theroy was that if any bum traveling vagrant thief always kept his towel with him, people would know that he was a very organized guy and a person to be taken seriously.
