Travel and Leisure

Ahh, my first thread.... emoticon

I wanted somewhere to posts about where I've been, seen, going to, trips, vacations, visits, work-related jaunts, and sabbaticals. emoticon

I've recently been to New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. In Freeport, Maine I visited Gritty's Pub & Brewery, drove out to an island (yes I used the bridge!) to see the ocean, and spent a couple of dollars to swim in the pool at the hotel next door since mine didn't have one!

I leave for Indiana in a couple of weeks to stay 5 days at a nice hotel (sauna's, hot-tubs, pool, exercise room, fancy places to eat, pub, and all in one place).

I go to Rochester, NY the next week. Hopefully going to Michigan in April to visit with frieds and eat at all the great eaterys in the NW part of MI.

yadayadayada I'm interested in everyone elses excursions...really emoticon :}

Re: Travel and Leisure

The furthest away I've been from Portland, Oregon is Tucson, Arizona. My grandparents live in a very nice mobile home park, which has a swimming pool (it'd have to, in that heat!) My cousin and I were both down there for a week...we stayed in the house next door because it was owned by "Snow birds" or people who only live in Arizona in the Winter. It was awesomeness.

I don't have a lot of opportunity for travel...come to that, I'm not a big travel fan anyway. I like to sit at home...it's where my books, internet, and gamecube...is. emoticon

My grandparents were "snowbirds". They resided in Oregon for the summer but come fall they headed to Phonix, AZ for golf, swimming and hanging out at their trailer where they lived, in a park like you described. They were wonderful, and I looked forward to them visiting each year.

Thanks for the post, Guninator! emoticon

[OT]

If this board ever grows to something beyond say, 100 members (ha! emoticon) I might have to enact a stricter spamming policy *cough*... but I'll let that one slide for now SpamBound. emoticon

I wonder if there was a non-anal retentive way to say that. Oh well. emoticon

I keep meaning to do a serious post in this thread about Sweden. It's a bit of a daunting task to cover everything really. I'll post one thing at least.

Many Swedes are shy about meeting new people, I'd say it's a cultural thing. However, once you get to know them I've found they are extremely kind and fun! This also applies if you're in a situation where you don't have to break the ice in order to have a conversation, such as taking a taxi.

My neighbours in the student dorm are among the nicest people I've ever met. People are always friendly to one another, people say hello in the kitchen (we all share a kitchen), and everyone is really patient in teaching me different Swedish phrases. (The other night, one guy taught me how to swear. emoticon ) This same fellow is always baking and often makes extra, and puts it out on a plate for all to eat. (Delicious bread, muffins...)

I also noticed that Sweden is quite an international place. Every now and then you meet someone who has immigrated here. Also, a lot of the Swedes I've met are very well-travelled (and it seems they've all been to Canada :canada: emoticon). People take extra languages in school. It's quite common that in addition to learning Swedish (obviously) people take English as well as French and/or German, or another European language.

Aside from Sweden I have been to England twice. I'd really like to explore Canada more. Though I'm very knowledgeable and well-travelled (except the north-west, but that applies to pretty much all BCers) in my home province of British Columbia, the only other province I've seen is Alberta! emoticon

After travelling throughout Canada, I'd like to explore the USA. It's hard to figure out where to go though. I would like to visit Arizona, especially after reading the Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver. I'd also like to check out California.

Aww, don't go to California, Nurv. There's nothing interesting there.

What? Disneyland? Never heard of such a place.

Come to Oregon, it's much nicer here. *nodnod* emoticon

Even though I don't like travel, I really, really want to go to Europe. Soon. I have...five online friends I can think of off the top of my head whom I would *love* to meet in person, and they all reside in Europe.

What would you do if I randomly appeared on your doorstep demanding food and shelter, Nurv? emoticon

I don't care all that much about Disneyworld, even though my best friend went there and had a blast. It's a huge state! There are some very exciting forests there - how can you find the Giant redwood (grows mostly in the Sierra Nevada I think) uninteresting? I think they're a neat tree. Redwoods have a lot of confusing common names. Sometimes Western redcedar (not really a cedar) is confused with redwoods since it can grow quite large. However, us BCers and Oregonites (?) don't have any redwoods.

Giant redwood - Sequoiadendron giganteum
Coast redwood - S. sempervirens
Western redcedar - Thuja plicata

Now you know. emoticon

Anyway, I think California would be a neat place to visit. And I'll get there by meandering through Oregon! w00t Oregon coast.

If someone turned up in Umeå saying "Hi, I'm Gundamkiwi," I'd be a little disturbed. No offence. emoticon

Oregon is nice.
Of all the places I've visited, I like the Olympic Peninsula best--temperate rainforests and ocean!
I've only been to Canada twice. Always the U.S. ...*sigh*. I am planning to spend a semester in Ireland in the next year or so.

Lol, none taken. If you turned up in Eugene saying, "Hi, I'm Nurvingiel," I'd be like: "Woah...say that again! O.o" ^^;

And it's Oregonians, not Oregonites...though I commend you on your creativitiy. emoticon

Whenever I think California, I always think Southern California, which should really be a seperate state...like North and South Carolina, for example. I really rather dislike Southern CA, though I also can't really put my finger on why. Chalk it up to cynical, "World-ly" cousins with a superiority complex the size of a small coastal town, I guess. Jerks. >_<
