The Sunless Citadel

You journey south come the next day to head for the village of Hommlet. It is a village in the anarchic kingdom of Ereworn to the south. It is said by many that the devil wanders the roads in this country. It was not always so, legend has it that a powerful elf once created a crystal that protected the country, stopping evil from entering the borders, but that the daemon wolf Fengris angered by this destroyed the crystal and slew all those who came to put it back together.

After several days, you reach Hommlet and take some rooms between you. Ostler the innkeep tells you tales about the region, how he has a cursed shield that hangs in the inn. A merchant caravan also is in on the night that you are there, and later, you see a group of adventurers also enter. One in fact gets a tad drunk and tries to headbut the cursed shield.

During the night you hear rumours about dark forces in the nearby woods, and also you hear that despite the village being under the protection of a Lord Grizni (or such like, there are different versions of his name in the inn), that strange creatures harm the cattle in the area. On hearing that you are all to enter the sunless citadel, villagers fall quiet. They bid you caution as they say that there are goblins in the ruins. Four adventurers went in to the ruins a while back, and not much has been heard of since. The goblins trade an enchanted apple each year, and sometimes two. One bestows health to whoever eats it, the other death. When planted, stunted saplings grow, but the goblins, keen to stop others stealing what they grow themselves steal the saplings in the middle of the night.

As for the Sunken Citadel, it was once a fortress that worshipped evil dragons. A time ago, evil regined in the area, but when the elven crystals were formed, the evil in the castle was struck down and a great sorcerer caused the earth to swallow the castle. Now, it is present, whole and intact, but below the ground, accesable by a ravine outside the village which you reach by following an old road.

Come the morning, you follow the directions given to you by the villagers and follow the old road. After a few hours, you come to a ravine. At the roads closest approach to the cleft, several broken pillars jut from the earth where the ravine widens and opens into something more akin to a deep but narrow canyon. Two pillars stand straight, but most of them lean against the sloped earth. Other are broken and several have apparently fallen into the darkness shrouded depths. A few smaller pillars are visible on the oppostie side of the ravine.

According to the villagers, the ravine is how to get to the sunken citadel, and you have to descend it.

(I have removed a few coins from your sheets to pay for ale and accomdation that you will have paid for on the way to Hommlet.)

Nim.

Dark ravine

When you get closer to the ledge, you notice a strudy knotted rope hanging down into the darkness below. You can also see older weathered hand and foot holds carved into the cliff face.

On the pillars, you see writting, it appears that they are in two different languages, but none of you recognise any of them.

Right, I need a marching order, who (if anyone) is going to hold a light source and how you are to go down, rope or cliff face?

I'll go down first. Cliff face.

Come to think of it. Change of plan. Let's pull up the rope and see how far down it goes. That'll help us figure out how deep this is...

Or at what point we have to use the cliff face.

Ok Nim. Pull up the rope. We'll rest when we get tired.

The rope is about 20m long. It is knotted and should be very easy for you all to climb down. It may even hold more than one of you at once!

20 metres eh?

Funny how everyone is equipped with lanterns and no oil.

Grits teeth.
"Where's a shopt when you need one?"

Will insert the rope into a belt or strap or something.

Anyone with missile weapons might want to cover me. Can't I see 20m down?

Then descend on the handholds....

If you pass the thick knotted rope through a belt or such like, Sir Imrahil will not be able to go down the rope.

Wonder, now all I need to do is pass the end through my belt. Just a slight safety measure just in case I fall. No need to slip the entire 20 metres through my belt.

I can load my crossbow and stand watch while people climb down.

OOC: I am pretty busy these days so I won't be posting much. Tinoru will follow the consensus in the group and fight any bad guys we meet.

Sir Imrahil descends into the depths. Doron lights a lantern, and follows down, taking care as one hand is holding the party light source. As stated, 20m down, Sir Imrahil reaches a ledge, and with the aid of the light from Doron, above is able to see that this sandy ledge overlooks a subterranean gulf of darkness to the west. The ledge is wide but rough. Sand, rocky debris and the bones of small animals cover it. A roughly hewn stairwell zigs and zags down the side of the ledge, descending into the darkness.

As Doron makes his way down the rope, Sir Imrahil hears scurrying and three large rats charge out of the shadows to attack him!

(Kharille, I take it you want me to roll.)
