Whatever number "Alone" is...
I wrote this sitting in Lizz's room, one day. And I never typed it...until now. Enjoy.
"Arthur!" Jessica greeted an old friend with an exhausted smile.
"Busy weekend, eh Jessica?" Arthur asked, hugging her warmly.
"I never thought they'd invite so many people to a 25 year anniversary party!" Jessica responded, bumping into yet another guest at the party being given in honor of her 25th year of writing publishable mystery novels.
It seemed she barely let go of a sentence before running into someone else there to wish her good luck on many more years of writing. She did feel very comfortable around all these people who had come to see her and congratulate her on all her hard work. She didn't write for that reason, but it was nice to be recognized.
After another half an hour, though, of half bumping into conversations and a milion, "Thank yous" in response to people's congratulatory greetings, Jessica began to feel quite lonely. Being amidst a group of people is not quite the same as being a part of that group of people, and because there were so many people who wanted to say the same dull "Congratulations" to her over and over again like a six-year-old learning a new word, but unsure of how to use it, Jessica was amidst and not a part. Jessica knew that some of her dearest friends would get along well with each other and some would not. Sure enough, when she looked around, she saw several different clique-like groups forming. Private-investigator friends like thomas Magnum and Harry McGraw were getting along nicely, Cabot Covers were sticking together and even Michael Haggerty and Dennis Stanton had found friends in each other, based on the smiles on their faces.
And yet, surrounded by all of her nearest and dearest friends, Jessica was profoundly alone.
Seth, noticing the blank look on Jessica's face, made his way over to her and managed to pull her into a slow dance to the live band music.
"What's the matter, Jess?" he asked her, his tone informing her of hi extent of anxiety for her well-being.
"Oh, nothing, Seth," she smiled. And she meant it. "I was just thinking how horrible it would be...to be alone surrounded by all these people," she told him as he held her closer and they danced into the following morning.

Mari: Because it's morning!
