Player Ratings

We play good football, we talk, we encourage and at times we give/receive a rollocking. That is how football should be played. There is a fine line to all of these... as in:

We don't always play good football... but we try.
Some don't always talk... but they need to be encouraged.
Some people need a rollocking, some need encouragement, to me they are the same thing, and 'should' get the same results.

Some of you have, or could play higher (far higher) but as long as we all play to our best Polegate will be a great club. Everyone knows thier stregnths and weaknesses.

As a result I feel we all need to know how we do, I for one like to be judged on my performance. I think Blackie should use the player ratings to the full in order to encourage more effort and to let players know when they need to up their game, or when they are doing what they do well. I think it is great that so far we have won all bar one game well, and three defenders have received MOMs (all bar Liam, come on Forest!!).

What do you think? Are you happy with safe scoring or can you deal with a 5 and turn that to an 8???

Re: Player Ratings

I do agree with the skipper. Ratings are a bit of fun ultimately but should be used to encourage under-performing players to do better and to give a 'pat on the back' to players that are performing well. It's useful way or knowing what the manager thinks of your performance without having to ask for detailed feedback.

My suggestion would be that a rating of "7" is a player having a normal / average game, if they're off colour it should be lower. Having good and great games should be "8" and "9". A rating of "10" should be extremely rare and only be given for an outstanding individual performance.

Substitutes and players being subbed should be marked in same way and not just given a token "6". Mark them based on what they did while on the pitch, not how long they were on there for.

Agreed.

One thing I would say is that personally I'm my own biggest critic and i know when I've had a bad game (i.e.the majority of the time!) without someone telling me. In saying that if you know you've not played to the best of your ability and you get a 7 rating you feel as though the manager doesn't expect as much from you, which can be demotivating.

One thing that is good is after each game we're all patting each other on the back and saying "well played" to each other. Maybe we need to this during in the game a bit more.

Sorry about the late reply.
I am not, and never have been a fan of managers scoring players performances. However since the introduction of our website three seasons ago and the positive banter it encourages in the changing room I recognise the need for something. I tend to agree ( this is a worry ) with Woody that a "safe" score of either 6 or 7 is given with only exceptional performances being recognised ie Marvis at Hollington and Clive at Magham Down.
I prefer to speak to each player pre and post game to offer encouragment. Not many of this crop of players falls into the Paul Caille style of rant and rave. Sometimes things like that can only be delivered when the team is all together at half time, and I have been known to lose it, then it is my place to seek out individuals for 1-1. We have a great team a new club and a collective will to win. Long may this continue!
