Ok, Guys -This Should Concern ALL of Us
(Palin/Gibson interview)
Well ….
So that’s our next vice president, huh? The person who sat across from Charlie Gibson is the carefully vetted, fully informed candidate ready to be one heartbeat away from becoming leader of the free world?
Ummm. No.
Put bluntly, in some of her answers, she made Dan Quayle look like Henry Kissinger. That doesn’t make her a bad person. It doesn’t make her unintelligent. But it does make her unqualified for high office, and it calls into far more serious question the judgment of John McCain. The selection of a running mate was the first major decision McCain had to make as a nominee, and he blew it.
At one point, Gibson asked for Palin’s thoughts on the Bush Doctrine. She clearly had no thoughts because she had no idea what it was.
The Bush Doctrine was the justification the president cited that led us into the war in Iraq, and that some cite now as justification for attacking Iran. It has been the controversial guiding principle of our foreign policy for the past six years, crafted by a president of her own party, and she could not discuss it because she did not know what it was.
Now, a lot of Americans have no idea what the Bush Doctrine is, which is understandable. Even a governor of Alaska with less than two years experience doesn’t need to know what it means. But a lot of Americans aren’t claiming to be ready to step into the presidency if need be on Day One. They don’t NEED to be ready. She does.
Gibson also asked Palin whether her state’s proximity to Russia gave her any insight into its policies.
“They’re our next-door neighbors. And you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska,” Palin responded.
If that was unfairly edited, we’ll no doubt have access to the full transcript, and her defenders can make their argument. But I doubt her response will improve on the reading. Nor will her answer on why terrorists attacked us seven years ago, which amounted to a string of recited phrases with no internal logic.
Some on the right will somehow try to make Gibson the villain in all this, in line with their strategy to blame it all on the media. But if anything, he was gentle with Palin, far more gentle than many she would encounter as vice president. This was slow-pitch softball.
I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong. But I think the American people had to be shaken by what they saw. That includes those in the Republican Party who really do put their country’s interest ahead of their party.

There may actually be a few of those around somewhere - just not anywhere here
