Should America take a hard stand on China's human rights policies, including limiting trade as a way of signaling disapproval, even if such a stance may jeopardize diplomatic and trade relations?*

Only if we do indeed consider ourselves the righteous defenders of human rights as written in our own constitution and if we feel we have the right to impose those beliefs on others through pressure and/or actual force.

I can't see how it's the U.S.' business in any way shape or form.

If and when we need to try and keep 1.8 billion people in an orderly and functional society, then we can complain about China...if our standards arent the same as theirs.

Freedoms and liberties are relative to population densities.

Now when you say the people of America do you mean us and not the government? I think it would be great if people actually voted with their wallets but we have a tendency to do the opposite an give our money to whomever gives back the most for it. That encourages oppression, sweat shops, corner cutting, poor quality, poor design, slavery, etc. As for our government throwing its weight around, I would say that if we have a bottom line of standards for human decency, why not influence others to live up to them? Of course we need to e living up to them ourselves too. Now by human decency I'm not talking vague preferences that are moving targets depending on who is asked like abortion rights, mercy killing, etc. They should be established ideas that no one but a despot would not support. Things like killing people for speaking out against their government, for practicing their religion (if it harms no one else), for living their sexuality (if it harms no one else), freedom to associate or travel freely, the right to a fair trial, etc.

Because we can pick and choose who we trade with.

We are quite free to require our trading partners to meet certain standards or they don't see our money or goods.

In other words, you either be and act like us or at least a reasonably similar version socially or we'll completely F*CK you.

Suggest that to the U.S. business community and your body could be found floating face down in the East River. According to a report by the Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Trade Division, China replaced Germany and the United Kingdom to become the fourth largest market for U.S. goods and remains the fastest growing major U.S. export market.
I agree that China's human rights record is poor but a trade war is not the answer.

JOY--As you know My wife is from Nanning china . We have many many friends from all over china. shes talking to a lady from Mongolia now.
None if our friends has ever said anything about human rights in china.I ask all our friends {inclucing the dozens of friends and family in china ]DO you Like the chinses goverment --Answer from the chinese people --WHY Yes -Why do you ask????.
You see What we think in the USA dosent necessarilly translate into what is fact half way around the world.
 Some facts about china -
When you buy a house or condo You OWN IT FOREVER-There is no rent to the goverment[property tax]. You can open a business very easy and the cost for the liscense is quite low and the goverment leaves you alone .
My wife has 3 sisters and a bro-all 3 sisters have a girl baby sis#2 has 2 girls -bro has a boy.sis #2 had to pay a fine for the second kid $750.00 usd. beleave me there are 1.4 BILLION people in china so they really have to lower the population.
I know many people who are party members And I dont know one of them who wants to hurt the people -they are teachers , business people and Goverment officials .They talk about the building a better life for the chinese people. My wife was telling them at dinner how many guns I own and they looked at me and said --YOU own guns --I told them Yes many guns --They said -Oh How wonderful We wish we could own guns too .Hint -if everyone in china had a gun they would never think of revolution--Remember they LIKE there goverment.NOW china is not a religous country 99% of the people are not religous and the problem comes when some christian group tries to open religion in china and they get there assssess wacked for it --! Fallon Gong is an out law radical religion.

This is the city she is from -I saw the biggest fireworks display I have ever seen on New years day there lasted 2 Hrs. The building with the ball on top is the International hotel where we had dinner many times .
