Summer nights It's officially summer and with that I thought of when I was a kid and what we did for fun. We played murders in the dark game, darn if I remember how it was played exactly but we did a lot of hiding! There also was the fishing in the canal near our home...the mosquitoes had a treat on us but catching a big ol cat fish was awesome. Going to the drive-in movies and playing on the swings before the show started, then onto the blanket near mom & dads car, filling up on popcorn and pop we had already brought with us...finally being lifted back into the car after falling to sleep and heading home. When the street light came on we all headed for home knowing that was the time to be in. Seems I spent a good part of my summer with a stubbed toe, making getting my good shoes on for Sunday church painful as ever. Oh and shoes...mom had an awful time keeping me in a pair, and me wearing them any distance from the house. (LOL I still run around bare foot)
I think the neighborhood kids used to play double dutch, relay races and handball, and we used to sit on the porch and bake in the sun until the ice cream truck finally came around.
I tried to walk barefoot once and almost got a beating because you can't exactly do that in NYC.
we'd go to the pier and fish...someone would turn on the fire hydrant and we'd play in it and spray cars that pass by...
and then the rest of the time I spent being tutored or writing books.

… I came from a very small town very removed from big City. Kids then and even now a days run around at all hours of the day and night...bare foot and shirtless (boys that is) Many homes have fire pits in the back yard and people sitting out and just visiting....drinking a beer or not. Here in Ohio corn hole games are played sometimes with huge lights beaming on the action. (they type that mechanics use to light their area of work) By modern advances we show movies on the side of the house using Zoom box with DVD (my oldest daughter found this gem) So they rent movies and then show them outside and the kids will watch, eat popcorn and drink kool-aid. Neighbor kids seem to like the whole event too. I guess my daughters have created the new version of the drive-in movie lol
