Republicans Continue to Bury THemselves
Congress is trying to push the auto industry to have 35 mpg min standards by 2020. That's nearly 12 years from now.
Republicans hate it (of course!) and Bush will veto it (of course!).
It's more important to coddle big industry then to help the average American afford to fill up her vehicle and get to work.

I agree...someone needs to draw the line and make it law, so everyone has to folow...we have no porblem drawing lines in other ways, like war...someone has to be bold enough to just do it and get it over with....

Re: Republicans Continue to Bury THemselves
Why would they oppose it? The Bush admin. called for fuel efficiency standards to be tightened as of 2008, didn't they?
Of course, this does nothing to help people's wallets...either pay through the nose at the pump, or shell out at least $20K for a newer, more fuel-efficient car.

Remember Carter's CAFE standards?
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D00EFDE123AF937A15752C1A9679C8B63&n=Top/Reference/Times%20Topics/People/B/Bush,%20George%20W
This statement in the article is the most troubling to me:
quote: Yet the Republican Congress in 1995 made it illegal for the Environmental Protection Agency even to study higher CAFE standards. The result is that America now has the worst energy efficiency in 20 years.
I don't recall that happening, but if it is true, my first question would be "why?"

Re: Republicans Continue to Bury THemselves
it's looking like we're screwed if we do, screwed if we don't...Carter's CAFE standards dramatically reduced oil imports, but instead of maintaining conservation, it resulted in an oil glut. Reagan had no choice but to roll back the standards, and that doubled the oil imports.
perhaps what's necessary more than standards is that the admin. educate the populace about the importance of conserving oil...
but then again, that might decrease the profits Big Oil has enjoyed thus far...and the powers that be don't want that.

Re: Republicans Continue to Bury THemselves
quote: That's when the Reagan administration intervened to rescue America's domestic oil industry from gasoline price collapse. Ronald Reagan's rollback of CAFE standards caused America, in that year, to double oil imports from the Persian Gulf nations
If the final statement in this part is true, what we're talking about is an issue of focusing on gasoline instead of crude production. Basically, Reagan appears to have protected and ENCOURAGED crude imports.
Oopsie-poops, in other words.

precisely...
according to the article, only 40% of the crude we import is used to fuel light trucks and cars.
and of course Reagan protecte Big Oil...who do you think contributed to his campaign and election?
