Was pottery big in Knottingley?
I am tracing an ancestor (Sampson Heath) back to the early 1800's. He was a Potter in Stoke-on-Trent in the 1851 census but I think I found him in 1841 as a Potter in Knottingley.
He married in Knottingley in 1839 and listed his occupation as "Mariner". I know there are nautical connections to Knottingley - but I don't know how much of a Pottery industry it had.
Is it likley, do you think, that a Mariner would change jobs to become a Potter?
It seems a bit strange to me!
Any advice welcome
Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark,
It seems you haven't had a reply yet?
I think its reasonable to assume your ancestor might have switched occupation. Times were hard and you had to earn where you could I guess.
I expect some types of work were seasonal too
This site has information on pottery, glass, railways in Knottingley.

Just as a word of caution too....
I have ancesters who where listed as potters but on closer inspection their marriage certificate has them living in Potter - an area known as potter newton.
He was listed as a potter but it is known by other sources he was indeed a grocer?
Just a thought.
