Batman The Long Halloween VIII April Fools

Batman
The Long Halloween
Part VIII
April Fools

Based off the Comic Book miniseries The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale

Gotham City
April 1st

The rain poured down on Gotham City as the city prepared for another killing, It had been six months since the Holiday killings began with Johnny Viti on Halloween. Now with over 20 people, most tied to the Falcone crime family, dead the police, Batman and The Roman himself all wanted to know one thing.

“Who is Holiday?” That was the question on everyone’s minds, no more so then Batman or The Riddler. Both men were debating just who Holiday was, Batman in the Batcave and the Riddler at The Roman’s penthouse. Batman had copies and photos of all the clues that had been left behind at all of the crime scenes spread out across a table all looked at by both Batman and Alfred at least once already. Even Batgirl had been given a chance to look over the clues when he brought her to the cave. The Riddler also had copies of the clues but also the threat of harm from Sofia Gigante that kept him focused on the case. He had been brought in by the Roman to use his brain to solve the case. The Riddler, also known as Edward Nigma, was one of the only villains in Gotham who could really out think The Batman, He had graduated from College at the age of 16 and soon turned his love of riddles into a career before turning to crime and getting the name The Riddler.

**

“It’s a Mystery,” The Riddler looked over the clues on Falcone’s desk. “Broken into a jigsaw puzzle, wrapped in a conundrum, Hidden inside a Chinese box.”

**

“Clues are left behind by someone at each murder scene, these objects can easily be picked up at any dime store,” Batman looked over his clues. “Each one was picked to represent the date of the murders. A jack-o-lantern for Halloween, a Cornucopia for Thanksgiving, a snow globe for Christmas, a champagne glass for New Years, a heart shaped box of candy for Valentine’s Day and a small leprechaun for St Patrick’s Day. All holidays like today, April fools day.”
**

“A riddle,” The Riddler picked up a .22 and looked down the sight of the gun as he examined it.

**

“A killer,” Batman looked through a microscope at one of the .22’s from the murders.

**

“Question: Why does the killer always use the same weapon?” The Riddler brought the gun up to his face as if to smell it. “Answer: He gets them wholesale or lets be more practical. These .22’s are lightweight, perfect for a woman to use. A Catwoman, with the break in last June she would have all the addresses and names of everyone in the Falcone Empire. Add the bounty on her head; suddenly her best defense is a good offense.”

**

“Maroni,” Batman leaned back away from the microscope. “From the beginning the killings have favored Sal “The Boss” Maroni; he weakens the Falcone family, growing bolder with each murder. Who else on New Years Eve would shoot Falcone’s own son in the back?”

**

“Question: why does the killer shoot Alberto Falcone?” The Riddler places the gun down with the other replicas. “Answer: Because he can, what I mean to say is Alberto wasn’t in the family business, which raises the issue, are these killings something more personal? Carla Viti, Mr. Falcone’s sister, her son Johnny Viti. It is no secret that Johnny was going to testify before a grand jury, it is also no secret that The Roman tried to get a hired knife between his nephew’s ribs. Did Carla Viti do the unthinkable? Did she murder her own son just to hide her identity? Now her own guilt masks her rage, she can now kill anyone and no one would suspect her. She was their on New Years Eve, who else could have come up on Alberto with out him reacting. At this point it is little more then a son for a son. Moments later, she runs back to the scene covering her tracks.

**

“If I may sir,” Alfred came up behind Batman carrying a tray of tea from upstairs. “You seem to be forgetting someone with all of your theories.”

“Julian Day,” Batman sat up straighter in the chair. “According to Arkham’s records he’s still locked up, I suppose they could be altered.”

“He wasn’t who I was referring to, Master Bruce,” Alfred set the tray down on an open table. “In ones quest for justice I have seen someone as sane as you behave in most surprising ways.”

“Gordon told me he arrived late on New Years, at Christmas I suppose he could have followed The Joker from his home and killed Milo,” Batman walked towards the table with the clues. “He left Wayne manor with more then enough time to hit Maroni’s men at the Restaurant.”

What will you do now sir?” Alfred bowed his head slightly.

“I’ll pray I’m wrong,” Batman picked up the gun again “Harvey Dent.”

“Bruce Wayne,” Harvey Dent held the file in front of him, it had been a long day and with Gordon’s arrival, he once again pressed the issue at hand.

“You are sure you want to do this,” Gordon hung his coat up as he looked over at Harvey and his assistant Vernon. “You know Rachel Dawes won’t like this.”

“I’m not, arresting one of Gotham’s leading citizens is not something want to do,” Dent placed the file back on his desk. “But if Wayne is helping the Roman’s empire then he deserves what he gets.”

“It’s your call,” Gordon sighed. “Get me a warrant and we’ll bring him in.”

“That will take some time,” Dent, pointed at Vernon. “Vernon here has been gathering all the info he can find. Once we have enough to convince a judge we’ll get it done.”

“That will be the issue, won’t it,” Gordon sat down across from Dent. “Convincing a Judge to issue a warrant for Bruce Wayne that would be like getting one for the bloody prince of England for jaywalking.”

“That’s why I’m taking your advice and going slowly,” Dent placed his hands on his desk as Vernon left the office. Unknown to the two men he remained at the door to listen in from his office, keeping a careful eye on the door way to make sure no one saw him.

“I just hope he is tied to Falcone and this isn’t some mistake,” Gordon leaned forward. “I know I can’t afford a lawsuit and I don’t want to put Barbra through that.”

“I know,” Dent agreed with what Gordon was saying. “Where is Barbra anyway?”

“She’s off on a class trip, she’ll be back on Sunday,” Gordon was pleased for the change in topic. “How about you, any children in the near future?”

“Not yet, Gilda wants one though,” Dent felt a smile come to his lips. “Maybe when the Falcone crime family is done for we’ll be able to give it a real go.”

The Roman, Carmine Falcone sat behind his desk as The Riddler went on naming suspects for The Holiday killings all made sense for some of the murders, a couple even made sense for all of the killings. But he was growing tired of the lack of answers he was getting from the man he hired to solve this riddle.

“Mister Nigma,” Carmine folded his hands in front of him. “I was under the impression that there was no riddle you couldn’t solve, could I have been mistaken?”

“No sir,” The Riddler did his best to keep himself from running from the room.

“And yet you have put together one guess after another,” Carmine leaned forward as Sofia circled around the room stopping behind The Riddler. “Each with no more certainty then the other. You are beginning to make me mad.”

“I can only tell you what I think, I need to examine everything closely, the real clues,” The Riddler tried to explain as Sofia removed his hat and placed her hands on each side of his head.

“Tell me right now, Mr. Nigma as if your life depended on it,” Carmine leaned forward even further as Sofia began to squeeze Nigma’s head like a grapefruit. “And believe me, it does. Who is Holiday?”

“Um,” The Riddler was having a hard time thinking as he felt his head coming close to crushing. Suddenly one name popped into his mind. “Carmine Falcone.”

“Me,” Carmine almost fell out of his chair.

“You?” Sofia released her grip on the Riddler.

“Sofia,” Carmine burst into laughter followed by Sofia before calming down. “Take Mr. Nigma out the side exit and hurry right back, I have something else for you to do.”

“Yes father,” Sofia placed The Riddler’s hat back and dragged him out of the room and towards the exit. With one good shove The Riddler fell into a puddle of water and the door shut behind him. Getting to his feet the Riddler brushed off the mud and started to walk away when he heard a sound from the shadows.

“Hello?” The Riddler asked a slight quiver in his voice.

Out of the shadows a figure hidden by an umbrella pointed a .22 caliber pistol, its barrel hidden by a baby bottle nipple. The Riddler knew at once he was face to face with Holiday, but he couldn’t see who it was. With out warning the figure opened fire, causing the Riddler to fall backwards into the wall behind him and close his eyes. When the firing stopped he opened his eyes to find that the shooter had traced his form in the wall behind him with the bullets, at his feet the gun, shells, shot out baby bottle nipple and the umbrella lay in the rain. Holiday was no where to be seen as the cold rain poured down on the Riddler.

“Question: When does a killer not kill,” The Riddler gasped as he stood completely still in the rain.
