How I met your Mother season 5 news updated 10/25th

General News

Question: Do you have any information on Barney and Robin on the next season of How I Met Your Mother? --Lynn
Ausiello: Their relationship will be one of two major focal points of season 5, per exec producer Craig Thomas. "Barney's feelings for Robin are out there, and it seems like Robin might have feelings for Barney herself," he says. "And it's so much fun to write for two people who are emotionally illiterate like the two of them are." (For the record, the other major season 5 story is the Mother being one of Ted's students.)

Question: Will Barney and Robin make it as a couple on How I Met Your Mother? —Mike
Ausiello: Who knows? Come to think of it, Carter Bays probably does. Let’s ask him! “It’s been fun discovering what they’re like in a couple,” he tells me. “We’ve seen Robin in a relationship with Ted; we know she can do it. But for Barney, this is undiscovered country. As an adult, he’s never had a relationship. He had a girlfriend in college who totally broke his heart and sent him on this journey towards becoming Barney, and he’s been [the same] since. So it’s been very interesting seeing him take his attitude and the world view that he’s developed as a single guy and apply it to being in a relationship.” Bays adds that their relationship will “have repercussions for everyone,” particularly Ted. “We’re exploring how Ted deals with the fact that his ex-girlfriend and best friend are now dating. And we’ll see how Marshall and Lily deal with the fact that there’s another couple in the group. It’s giving us a lot of juice for the first half of the season.”

[Sarah Chalke will more than likely return] but probably not until May 2010. That's when The Wedding Bride, the movie Stella's fiancé was writing, hits theaters. "If we can pull it off," says exec producer Carter Bays, "it's going to be a cool little treat for the second half of the season." [...] Bays adds that [Barney and Robin's] relationship will "have repercussions for everyone," particularly Ted. "We're exploring how Ted deals with the fact that his ex-girlfriend and best friend are now dating. And we'll see how Marshall and Lily deal with the fact that there's another couple in the group. It's giving us a lot of juice for the first half of the season." Source: The Ausiello Files

[The mother is in the wrong classroom Ted taught in the premiere.] "She's not in the class he teaches week-to-week," confirms exec producer Craig Thomas, "but she's super close by." Source: The Ausiello Files

In the upcoming 100th episode of How I Met Your Mother, Barney will call upon the sartorial skills of none other than Project Runway's Tim Gunn. In the episode, which will air around the mid-point of the CBS comedy's fifth season, Gunn will act as a "personal tailor/ fashion consultant as Barney tries to fix a major league 'Suit Catastrophe,'" according to HIMYM co-creator Craig Thomas. "Tim is basically like Barney's ER physician for a serious suit emergency." For Barney, a man-about-town who takes his suits very seriously, it's "life or death stuff," Thomas jokes. But wait, that's not all: Episode 100 will also have a guest appearance from Rachel Bilson of The O.C. and a big musical number as well. We know from his well-received turns hosting the Emmys and the Tonys that Neil Patrick Harris can pull off the musical showstoppers like nobody's business. He will no doubt, as Tim Gunn would say, make it work. "We're really excited to have Tim on the show, and, with Rachel Bilson cast as a Ted love interest and a huge musical number to boot, it's gonna make Episode 100 even more fun and special," Thomas said. Source: Chicago Tribune

A show rep confirms to us that Rachel [Bilson] has been picked for the potentially pivotal part [of the mother], which ties in perfectly with reports from our best frenemy earlier this week stating the HIMYM 100th-episode celebration is set to be mom-centric. Show runners had been "spending a lot of time trying to cast the female role in Ted's story" for the landmark epsode, said Ausiello. So is Rachel's character the real deal? While it seems likely that the adorable starlet is the mama-related lady in question, Bilson's rep tells us that she's only signed on to appear in the one episode. Source: Kristin on E!Online

The entire cast will be involved [in the 100th episode musical number]. But NPH will be the headliner. Source: The Ausiello Files

Episode 5.07: "Bagpipes" Airdate: Nov. 2nd

How I Met Your Mother fans will be treated to not one, but two, different looks at what married life would be like for Barney and Lily. In the Nov. 2 episode, "Bagpipes," Barney and Robin are on a high, bragging about how they're the perfect couple and don't fight. Marshall and Lily, on the other hand, have a few stereotypical marital problems. Their main squabble is over Lily forcing Marshall to do the dishes. Being his normal arrogant self, Barney describes to Marshall two different scenarios, which are depicted on the show, in which Barney and Lily are married, with Barney laying down the law on not having to clean. That's when the pair shares their kiss. Source: TV Guide Online

Despite their best efforts to be the perfect couple, Barney's know-it-all attitude gets him in trouble with Robin and they are forced to ask Marshall and Lily for relationship advice. Guest cast: Phil: Sam Stephanski. Source: CBS

Episode 5.06: "Two Guys, a Girl, and Gonzola's." Airdate: Nov. 9th

So how are Barney and Robin faring as a couple on How I Met Your Mother? Well, if the upcoming Nov. 9 episode of the CBS comedy is any indication, maybe not so great. Barney, it seems, has packed on some pounds. "It's a phenomenon that a lot of people can relate to, certainly more than a few people on our writing staff. It's relationship gut," says HIMYM exec producer and co-creator Carter Bays. Bays says Harris was more than game to don a fat suit for the episode. "He was loving it. He was like, 'Give me the biggest fat suit you've got.'" Source: Entertainment Weekly

Episode 5.08: "The Playbook " Airdate: Nov. 16th

Barney decides to return to his compulsive womanizing ways, after his brief foray into monogamy with Robin crashes and burns. Claire: Late 20s, this beautiful girl is intrigued by Barney, who's wearing a scuba diver's suit. Taken aside by Lily and told some of Barney's tangled history -- she's even more intrigued. When Barney breaks down and confesses that he's terrified of dating women as himself (and not as some fake character), she agrees to go out with him as himself -- an outcome that Barney has planned his entire day arranging. Shelly: Late 20s, this sweet young woman is a teacher who works with Lily. She agrees to have a meet-and-greet date with Ted at the bar -- only Barney gets there first. Manipulated into believing that he's a famous billionaire explorer and a highly eligible bachelor, she goes back with him to his apartment -- an episode that leaves both Ted and Lily intent on revenge. Roberta: Late 20s, an attractive girl, she meets Barney at the Empire State Building, and breaks down in tears when he lies, telling her that her boyfriend isn't showing for their date. Needing a shoulder to cry on, she goes back with him to his apartment -- and takes the opportunity to steal Barney's Playbook -- for Roberta is a plant, sent by Lily to capture the Playbook. Girl: Late 20s, this very attractive girl falls for Barney's latest ploy: that he's a secret astronaut with Secret NASA, the kind the government never talks about. Girl 2: Late 20s, this girl in the bar is deeply impressed when Barney tackles the infamous Ice Pick Killers (aka Ted) right in front of her. Source: SpoilerTV

Episode 5.09: "Maple Swirls" Airdate: Nov. 23rd

Marion's rep tells me his client extricated herself from the role of Lily's grandmother when the part started being cut considerably. "It almost became a one-liner," says the rep. Instead, Marion is expected to appear in five more episodes of Brothers & Sisters this season as mom to Sally Field's Nora. Filling in for Marion will be St. Elsewhere vet Christina Pickles, who popped up last season on The CW's Privileged. Source: Keck's Exclusives

Let's hope Brothers & Sisters doesn't need it's grandma for their Thanksgiving episode, because former Happy Days mom Marion Ross has just signed on to play Lily's granny, Rita, on How I Met Your Mother's Turkey Day episode, set to air on Nov. 23. The episode, titled, Maple Swirls (sounds yummy!), finds Lily and her friends visiting her grandparents, who have been plagued by their deadbeat son (and Lily's dad) Mickey (Chris Elliott). Good for Marion for landing so much work in her 80's! Source: Keck's Exclusives

Sources confirm that comic goofball Chris Elliott has landed the pivotal role of Lily's estranged dad on How I Met Your Mother. The highly-anticipated family reunion is slated to air Nov. 23 when father and daughter come face-to-face at a Thanksgiving celebration hosted by Lily's grandparents. I'm told the episode will feature childhood flashbacks that will shed light on Lily's very troubled relationship with her father. Word is the dude was a big-time loser/crook, which makes Elliott's casting pretty perfect if you ask me. Source: The Ausiello Files

Lily's estranged father Mickey shows up for Thanksgiving, prompting memories of all the people Lily has declared dead to her in the past. Meanwhile, Robin accuses Barney of buying his famous, supposedly homemade cobbler at a store, and she challenges him to cook another one from scratch. Rita: In her late 70s, slow-moving, she is Lily's sweet, patient, long-suffering grandmother who hosts a Thanksgiving meal for Lily and her friends. Rita has allowed her thoughtless, selfish grown son Mickey to move back into her house. She's even broken her hip carrying Mickey's trunk, and given up her retirement money to fund Mickey's gambling and board game creations. Morris: In his late 70s, slow-moving, he is Lily's (Alyson Hannigan) grandfather who is delighted to host her and her friends for Thanksgiving. Unlike his wife Rita, he sees through Mickey, and his affection for Mickey is forced. 11-year-old Lily: Seen in flashbacks, she is Lily as an 11-year-old girl. She suffers through her dad's antics, and, as taught, she tells the IRS over the phone that her father is dead. Mr. Park: This Korean man, 40-50s, works at a street bodega and gives Lily regular coffee even though she asked for decaf. When pressed, he insists she got decaf, but he's lying to her. Sandy: Seen in flashback, 18-20 years old, she is Lily's freshman roommate in college who makes out with Lily's dad. Mr. Ossias: An elderly neighbor of Lily's, he steals her newspaper and is thus declared dead to her. Bridesmaid #1 and Bridesmaid #2: Seen in flashback to Lily's wedding, these bridesmaids compliment Lily's dress. Trudy: Seen in flashback, another bridesmaid at Lily's wedding, she tells Lily she's not a fan of her wedding dress. Leopold: A customer at Mr. Park's bodega, he requests a regular coffee. Episode 5.11: Last Cigarette Ever

When Marshall picks up smoking again, it prompts Lily, Ted and Barney, ex-smokers all, to succumb as well. Meanwhile, Robin gets a new co-anchor at her show. Don Frank: In his mid to late 30s, in a leather jacket, a seasoned, fairly famous reporter, he is Robin's new co-anchor on "Come On, New York, Get Up," her ridiculously early morning news program. A veteran of cable news, Don took a public stance against his program's biased reports, and now the only place that will hire him is Robin's show. Some sparks fly between him and Robin, and he asks if he can bum a cigarette from her. Her high hopes for career legitimacy are crushed when Don makes it clear that being on her show is a low point for him. He's bitter about the fact that no one's watching, and he doesn't care how his attitude might affect Robin. Recurring. 13-year-old Friends: Seen in flashbacks, they are 13-year-old Marshall's friends, attempting to smoke cigarettes in the woods, and coughing. Mr. Hessler: Marshall's new boss, who doesn't know Marshall's name, he offers Marshall a pivotal third cigarette while hanging out on the roof. Mr. Hessler later survives a heart attack.
