The Vampire Diaries Season 1 recap

From Zap2it By Jessica Paff

The newest entrant to our recent obsession with all things blood sucking is 'The Vampire Diaries'. How does its premiere hold up to all the others?

First, let me come clean: I've read Dracula and seen nearly every film version, I grew up with Anne Rice, I love True Blood and Twilight makes me giggle what with the sparkles and fresia scented blood. So there's my nosferatu vitae. This show takes place in Mystic Falls high. Elena and her brother Jeremy now live with their college aged Aunt Jenna because their parents were killed suddenly when their car went over a bridge. P.S., Elena was in the car too. Survivor's guilt?

Elena's BFF is Bonnie, who's her grandma told her she's psychic and descended from Salem witches, not that she believes it. There is also Caroline, who is blonde and perky and a bit air headed. Elena used to date Matt, all American jock and a childhood friend who she decided to date to see if they could be more. They couldn't. Matt's sister, Vicky, took Elena's brother's virginity and that's a little....odd. Jeremy still wants to get together with Vicky, but she's more interested in Tyler. Tyler, Jeremy and Vicky are all "stoners", much to Elena's chagrin.

In sharp contrast to Matt's jockiness is Stefan. He's the mysterious and hot new boy at school who reveals to Elena that he lives with his Uncle because his parents were killed. In truth, He's the uncle, though his nephew Zach looks older than him. Ah, the eternal youth of being a vampire. Stefan enrolls in school, where he is quickly entranced by Elena and Caroline is quickly entranced by him. Zach is less entranced by any of it when the local news reveals a couple was killed in a vicious "animal attack". Stefan assures him he has it under control, but Zach is convinced Stefan shouldn't be in Mystic Falls.

And Elena doesn't think he should be in the cemetery, despite how he helps her up from a fall after she was running from a crow and some fog. Fog in the middle of the day. Which seems pretty weird. He admits that he's visiting family and Elena notes the first connection. Later that evening he shows up at her house to return the diary she dropped, revealing he also keeps a journal. Connection number 2. She invites him to to meet up with her friends and in the course of getting to know each other, he reveals his parents are dead. #3! Stefan soon gets an invitation to a party. His only concern is whether or not Elena will be there - a fact that makes sense when he goes home and gazes at an old journal from 1864 to reveal a picture labeled Katherine. Who looks just like Elena.

At the party, Matt moons after Elena, Caroline moon after Stefan, Bonnie has a psychic connection with a beer bottle and Jeremy interrupts Tyler not taking no for an answer from Vicky. Irritated with both of them, Vicky decides to walk in the woods, by herself. Elsewhere, Stefan's eyes go dark and he excuses himself from Elena's company, saying he's going to get a drink. Fog swirls around Vicky, a crow lands nearby, she she's attacked by a figure in the dark. Stefan returns to Elena just in time for her to see her brother stumble off into the woods drunk. She follows, but not before he stumbles over Vicky's body. She's still alive when they get her back to the party, but barely. Matt runs to his sister's side and begs someone to call for help, glancing up just in time to see Stefan making a hasty exit.

Stefan goes home and tells Zach there was another attack - and it wasn't him. He goes upstairs, where a crow flies into his room as fog collects in a corner. Stefan is not the only vamp returning to Mystic Falls - his big brother Damon is also back. He teases Stefan about Elena and her resemblance to the long lost Katherine while trying to goad him into drinking her blood instead of the squirrels he feeds on. They get into a fight, but Damon easily bests his brother before announcing his plan to stick around and make him miserable. His first order of business is apparently catching the eye of Caroline, broken hearted by not measuring up to Elena yet again and ripe for the picking. Meanwhile, in the hospital, Vicky wakes to whisper one word to her brother Matt..."Vampire".

Zap2it by By Jessica Paff

The attacks in the woods continue on 'The Vampire Diaries' with a devious bent as some campers meet their demise after being toyed with. Apparently someone was never told not to play with their food.

While we haven't seen the attacker, it's been implied that it is Damon. Is this misdirection? It's still too early to say. It's not too early to see that Elena and Stefan have the hots for each other, though. They each spend the morning writing in their diaries about how they can't wait to get to school and see each other. Jeremy has also hurried out of the house early, but not to get to school - he's visiting the still unconscious Vicky.

Bonnie relates her witchy heritage to Caroline while outside Jeremy confronts Tyler on why he hasn't shown much interest in the fact that Vicky was nearly killed last episode. Two wrongs don;t make a right, but Jeremy threatens to kill Tyler anyway - which Tyler slyly points out to the girls he was talking to is a clear threat. I'm thinking someone is a weenie, how about you? Elena talks to Matt about Vicky while Stefan listens in with super vampire hearing. Matt admits to her that Vicky told him she was attacked by a vampire and then asks her what's up with the new guy. Which seems like an abrupt topic switch to me, because a possible VAMPIRE ATTACK is a topic that seems to call for more discussion. But maybe it's just been awhile since I was a teen.

Jeremy's teacher contacts their aunt Jenna to talk about how he's skipped 6 classes in 3 days, implying to her that he is using drugs. He then berates her for not being competent enough to take care of two teens, asking if there is another relative that could be involved. Harshness, jerkface! Matt goes to visit Vicky in the hospital and a moment later she's screaming. He runs off to find help and Stefan runs in to work a glamour and convince her it was an animal that attacked her. When Matt gets back to the room with a nurse, Vicky is asleep. He follows Stefan's shadow into a room filled with people donating or receiving blood. Either way there is a big pile of blood bags on a cart, which brings out Stefan's veins. When Matt arrives there is no Stefan and when he pulls aside a curtain he just sees an open window. Which doesn't seem to alarm anyone else in the room.

Matt returns to his sisters room to find her awake and when he asks what attacked her she answers that it was an animal. Jeremy comes to visit and Matt awkwardly leaves while Vicky whines that Jeremy is making her brother suspect there was something between them, which means others will suspect, which is extra bad because Tyler is starting to show interest. Jeremy points out that Tyler hasn't visited her once and that he was the one who saved her. Which seems to catch her interest at least.

Elena shows up at Stefan's house, but instead meets Damon and his crow. Damon lets drop that he can see why his brother is smitten and that he's glad he's finally getting over his ex, Katherine. Which is right about when Stefan shows up. Elena finds herself in the middle of a glaring contest and lets herself out. Damon asks Stefan is he went to clean up his mess, pointing out that he can't be sure his powers worked without actually feeding. We cut to Vicky having a nightmare about Damon, proving the point.

Jenna tries to tell Jeremy that she dabbled in drugs too, but he's not interested in story time. He goes to the Mystic Grill, where Elena is moaning about how Stefan never texted her (despite the fact that she never gave him her number) and Vicky is moaning about not be able to get the day off (and after getting out the hospital the same day, I agree!). Jeremy gives her some pills and when Tyler tries to be a killjoy, she blows him off. It obviously makes Jeremy happy. How long can that last? Outside, Stefan approaches Elena as the gang watches a comet by firelight and she says she understands that things are complicated. Is someone changing their Facebook status?

Jeremy is looking for Vicky again, and in the process it is revealed to everyone that he's dealing drugs and that Vicky has chosen him "over and over and over". Subtle! Everyone goes to look for Vicky while Elena confronts Jeremy on dealing. Matt also takes a moment to confront Stefan about how he will always protect Elena, but Stefan excuses himself when he hears Vicky. A moment later he's on a roof with her and Damon. There's another confrontation, but this one far more twisted as Damon tries to entire his brother into feeding from Vicky or risk being found out as a Vampire. Stefan announces that is he was staked than at least he would be free of him. Damon undos his own glamor of Vicky and she wanders off with Stefan thinking she's just stoned. Matt thanks Stefan for finding Vicky and Bonnie gives him Elena's number. Put when she touches him she has a mini freak out.

Jeremy seems ready to freak out himself when he sees Vicky making out with Tyler. Given that she's blown him off earlier, I can only guess that she's emotionally unstable or it's the drugs Jeremy gave her. Caroline is surprised by Damon appears by her car. She tells him she was hoping to see him again and he replies that he knows. When she implies that he's ****y, he responds "very much" OMG! WHAT R U IMPLYING?!

Jenna goes through Jeremy's room and finds a bong and pipe while having a melt down in front of Elena about how she's not as good as their mother and will screw up. Elena tells her she's just scared and then realizes that she is too. She goes to Stefan's house and tells him about her revelation, that she is scared to be happy because disaster could strike. He tells her that this is reality and they kiss! Of course, upstairs Caroline and Damon are doing more than kissing (wink wink/nudge nudge). And then they are doing even MORE when Damon goes all fang and bites her as she screams.

Surely Stefan heard her. How can he handle that with Elena downstairs? Will he have to glamour her and isn't that crossing a line? At that point, you might as well just glamour her into a relationship. Do you agree?

Re: The Vampire Diaries Season 1 recap

From Zap2it By Jessica Paff

Last week, 'The Vampire Diaries' left us hanging with the show ending seconds after Damon attacks Caroline. Has the vampire population in Mystic Falls just increased?

It seems not, as Caroline wakes up more than a little freaked out. She tries to sneak out of her room, but how do you sneak away from a supernatural being? You don't. Damon attacks her again as she tries to fight him off. Someone is missing school today. Speaking of school, Bonnie tells Elena that she's concerned for her because of the bad feeling she got when she touched Stefan's hand. Elena tells her she's happy and asks her best friend to give her new boyfriend a chance. Also getting a chance is Jeremy, as Vicky asks him to go to a concert with her. He's less interested in giving her a chance, as he asks if she just slept with him to get drugs.

Elena wants her best friend and her boyfriend to get along so she has them both over for dinner. Stefan wins Bonnie over by telling her that the witches of Salem were heroic symbols of individuality. Damon and Caroline show up to provide dessert, which would have been thoughtful had they been invited. Elena, not knowing better, invites them in, despite Stefan trying to stop her. They chat about Stefan joining the football team, Elena trying to rejoin the cheerleading team and Katherine being dead. Well, that last one is less direct. Damon corners Elena trying to manipulate her in any way he can. She's too smart for him though, as she asked who dated Katherine first. He doesn't give a straight answer, but she clearly surprises him when she tells him she's sorry for his loss. And for a moment, he almost looks like he's having a real emotion. Almost.

Matt is dealing with Elena having a new boyfriend better than his friend Tyler is. Tyler tries repeatedly to get the best of Stefan, attempting to hit him in the back of a head with a football, tackle him with unnecessary roughness, etc. Stefan is smart enough to let him get one over on him in the tackle but it hardly seems like enough for Tyler. Matt, on the other hand, might be going for sainthood because he keeps telling Tyler to knock it off and eventually just about calls off their friendship over it. Which doesn't seem like it would that big a loss honestly.

Nor does losing Vicky seem like a big loss, but Jeremy and Tyler continue to needle each other about it. They have more then one altercation and it all becomes another point of contention between Tyler and Matt after Tyler attacks Jeremy at the big game. Stefan steps in to stop it and when Tyler tries to land a solid bunch to his gut, it doesn't have any effect whatsoever. When Jeremy comes running back at them with a broken bottle - well that does have an effect. It cuts Stefan's hand wide open. Of course, it immediately heals. Stefan tells Elena that she didn't see what she thinks she saw and the blood on his hands wasn't his own.

Damon has Caroline steadily controlled. Well, he can't seem to stop her constant chatter, but her scarf is firmly in place and no one can get it off her. He's also trying to control Elena, as she awakes from a vivid dream where she nearly sleeps with him to find a crow on her window sill. He corners her at the big game and tries to glamour her, telling her that he knows she wants him, knows she dreams about him and that she wants to kiss him. Instead, she slaps him and tells him that whatever was between him, his brother and Katherine will not be happening with her. Which is when he notices the amulet his brother gave her to protect her.

He confronts Stefan about the ploy and Stefan tells him that he thinks there is still a bit of humanity left in his big brother. His reasoning is that he's had 145 years to kill him and he hasn't done it. He then says "Katherine is dead and you hate me because you loved her...and you torture me because you still do...", which makes it sound like Katherine dated Damon first, doesn't it? To prove to Stefan that his humanity is gone, Damon attacks Coach Tanner, landing another person in the hospital. But it does prove to Stefan that his brother's humanity is nothing more than a memory.

Who has a theory about why Bonnie keeps "seeing" 8, 14, and 22? I'm thinking it's the date of Stefan's death. Is Damon's humanity really gone, or was that near glimpse when Elena gave him her condolences? Was Vicky telling the truth about not needing the drugs to sleep with Jeremy or is she just manipulating the situation to keep two guys fighting over her? Did Elena quit cheerleading because she wanted to, or because Damon told her to (it was before she had the amulet)?

Re: The Vampire Diaries Season 1 recap

From Zap2it By Jessica Paff

He starts out by sneaking into Stefan's dreams, sending him into a nightmare about his older brother killing Elena. There is a great exchange where the stab each other, which is noteworthy because it proves that we need to see more of Stefan's abs. He also tells Caroline a "secret" about Stefan, knowing that it will get back to Elena. Because he tells her he wants it to after he tells her that he's going to kill her eventually. Anyway, the secret is that Katherine chose him and Stefan filled her head with lies so she broke up with him. Which Elena says sounds awfully one sided, no matter how convinced her best friend Bonnie is.

The whole gang is focused on the Founders Party, where Elena's loaned some family heirlooms for a display, including a pocket watch much to Jeremy's annoyance. He may even be more annoyed about the watch than he is about Vicky going to the party as Ty's date. But it's hard to tell since Jeremy always seems more than a little annoyed. Annoyed or inebriated. Vicky is thrilled, until Ty sneaks her past his mayoral family. Even she had to see that coming.

Zach aligns with Stefan after Damon chokes him for asking too many questions. It seems vervain is not just protective when worn, but can weaken a vamp when ingested. Like in scotch, which Stefan spikes and Damon refuses to drink. Or champagne, which Damon also refuses to drink. Besides, Damon is doing his best to seem charming and harmless to Elena by apologizing to her for trying to kiss her. He chalks it up to a familial history of sibling rivalry, but Elena isn't interested in being what the boys fight over. She is more interested in learning more about Stefan, but he's not exactly talking.

Caroline doesn't want to talk either, at least not when Elena sees the various bite marks Damon has left on her. Elena confronts Damon and then apologizes to Stefan. But when Stefan isn't the least surprised in his brother's behavior, she becomes more guarded. He asks her to trust him and she points out that trust needs to be earned. It doesn't go much further before Stefan excuses himself to follow Damon. Who is more than a little irritated that Caroline let her injuries slip to Elena. He tells her he's over her and digs in for a good meal when he collapses and Stefan appears out of the shadows, informing his brother that he knew he couldn't spike his drink...so he spiked Caroline's. And then flies Damon home and locks him in the VErvain grow room while he is too week to fight back.

I has been wondering when all the adult figures would become more than vague presences that were sometimes mentioned but only rarely seen. Tonight, we found out Jenna has an ex that she hates and isn't quite over yet, named Logan. Also, Ty's parent's are elitist snobs and Caroline's mom is a cop while her dad is in Memphis with Steven. Oh, and after 5 bodies have shown up drained of all blood, they know "They" are back and they want Jeremy's pocket watch for something.

Re: The Vampire Diaries Season 1 recap

From Zap2it By Jessica Paff

Damon wakes in the dirt of the basement after 3 days, to hear his brother explain from the other side of the door what the deal is. In the old days, when a vampire threatened to expose them to the natural world, the rest of the fangs would try to "reeducate" the wayward. By locking them up until they were so weak that the mummified, unable to speak or move, as a living corpse. And then let them stay that way for about a generation. Stefan says they'll discuss the matter again in about 50 years.

Also not discussing matters is Jenna, who is letting Vicky stay in Jeremy's room overnight. In truth, she seems more concerned with her upcoming date with Logan than the fact that her nephew and his not-really-girlfriend are snorting pain killers in his bedroom. More interesting, is it just me or do they take another dig at Twilight when Elena says she's not some "pathetic girl whose world stops spinning because of some guy" when Jenna asks how she feels about the fact that Stefan hasn't called?

Zach goes to the basement to say good bye to Damon, succeeding in nearly getting his head torn off until Stefan comes to save him. Unfortunately, that saving makes him an hour late to meet Elena at the grill. Leaving her to spend time with Matt and do the least advisable thing possible: ask her ex-boyfriend what he thinks of her current boyfriend. Luckily, Matt is going for sainthood and tells her he thinks he's a nice guy.

Elena is still not sure and the fact that when Stefan is confronted by an old guy at the grill who swears he knows him and Stefan's only answer is that he has to leave, she's not getting any more sure. Sensing his misstep, he shows up at her house to make her dinner and tell her all about Katherine, the most beautiful, selfish girl ever. He also tells her about his favorite books, movies, tv shows and movies, until Elena predictably cuts her finger while chopping garlic. He vamps out but pulls it together before she can get a good look at him. Meanwhile, Damon starts calling to Caroline and sending his crow out to find her.

At a fund raising car wash, Elena digs for more about Stefan by asking about the ring he refuses to take off. When he doesn't give her a satisfactory answer about it, or his own ancestors, she asks Logan if she can look at the news stations archival footage so she can investigate an animal attack in 1953. She sneaks away from the car wash because she doesn't want Stefan to know, but she pawns it off as saying she doesn't want Caroline to know. Of course, that doesn't matter because Caroline is at the Salvatore house, following Damon's call. Where she releases him, managing to get Zach killed before she escapes into the sunlight. The only saving grace is that Damon no longer has his ring, so he can't follow her.

During all this Bonnie is considering her own abilities, and manages to soak a mean girl and set a car on fire before Stefan figures out what she's doing. She begs him to keep her secret and he agrees. But really, it's his own secret he should be worrying about, as Elena watches the news footage and sees him, alive and well in 1953. Logan and Caroline's mom decide they need Jeremy's watch, which Logan swipes at the end of the episode - but not before Jeremy catches him leaving his bedroom. Caroline's mom should be more concerned with Caroline, even if she is a snot for telling her that if she needs to talk about boys she'll ask her dad, since he's the only one successfully dating one.

Jeremy is hanging out with Vicky and the other community addicts in the cemetery when they get into a fight about how she stole Elena's left over pain medication. He storms off and she stays put - becoming a snack for Damon yet again. Does he kill her this time? Would we have to care (honestly, she's one of the least interesting characters)? Bonnie appears at her aunt's house (played by Jasmine Guy!) saying she's afraid. I can't wait to see more of that story! Stefan comes back home to find Zach dead and Damon gone. He grabs a knife and is about to go hunting when Elena appears at his door, demanding to know what he is. Alas, the trailer at the end of the show revealed how that turns out, at least in part - but how do you think this will effect their relationship?

Re: The Vampire Diaries Season 1 recap

From Zap2it By Jessica Paff

The show starts right where we left last week, with Elena asking Stefan what he is. And when she gets the answer, she does what any sensible person would do - she runs. She runs straight home, locks the front door and runs up to her room. And he's there. He tells her that her knowing isn't safe, that he's not the one who's been killing people and then he begs for the chance to explain everything to her. But for now, she just wants him out of her house. He obliges, but he stays outside her house all night, just in case Damon shows up.

Damon is a bit busy though. Devouring and killing all the drug addicts Vicky was hanging out with in the woods. But, he doesn't kill Vicky herself. She has connections to Elena through her own brother being Elena's ex and Elena's brother being the boy she tortures on occasion. This makes her useful, just like Caroline was useful for awhile. But her interest to him goes much farther than Caroline as he seems to make the snap decision to turn her, muttering "I'm probably going to regret this."

Meanwhile, the far more level headed Stefan has decided to come clean with Elena. About everything. He tells her he's been 17 since 1864. Before then, Katherine was flirting with him and Damon, but she ultimately decided to have him escort her to the first Founder's Ball. And later that evening, while ignoring their victorian values, she bit him. I don't know why I didn't see that coming - but I admit it. I totally didn't. He wakes the next day and she mind tricks him into believing everything will be great. Elena naturally wants to know if he's ever messed with her head and he tells her about the nature of the necklace he gave her, to protect her from Damon's influence and from his own.

During all this, Vicky has been coming closer to transitioning, drinking Damon's blood and dancing around to an Enjoy the Silence cover in her underwear. But when push comes to shove and Damon tells her what the deal is now (after he snaps her neck), she too does the sensible thing, and runs. To Jeremy's house, where she immediately starts eating everything in sight. Jeremy calls Matt and we see the first signs of her emerging strength, but when Stefan and Elena shows up, he convinces her to relax. And she does. At least until Jeremy gets close enough to bite - and then she runs again.

Meanwhile, Logan and Caroline's mom, Logan and Tyler's dad have changed out the face of Jeremy's watch, replacing it with a compass. Armed with guns loaded with wooden bullets, they are using the compass Captain Jack Sparrow style, to find vampires. Which is exactly what Stefan is doing as well. He finds Vicky first and is just starting to tell her about how it's possible to live without killing humans when he gets shot. He's a moment away from being staked as well when Damon attacks Logan, killing him before digging the wooden bullet out of Stefan. He notes that if anyone is going to kill his brother, it's going to be him.

During this exchange, they've both lost track of Vicky...who is feeding on Logan's dead body. When she realizes what she's doing, she's off on the run again. Stefan gives Damon back his ring, picks up the compass and returns to Elena, telling her he lost Vicky. She doesn't like the idea of having to lie to Jeremy and Matt about what happened. All the same, she promises to keep Stefan's secret, but adds that she can't be with him knowing it.

Now that Damon knows she is aware of their true nature, how will he torture Elena next? Is Vicky going to be confined during daylight hours since she doesn't have a daylight savings ring? This is the first episode I cared about her at all, so I am really curious about where they are going to go with it!
