Fringe season 2 recaps

From Zap2it By Andrea Reiher

Tonight on "Fringe," new character The Shapeshifter takes over Agent Charlie Francis. Bummer.

When we last left our Fringe Team, we learned that Walter lost his son Peter at the age of 7 and subsequently retrieved him from an alternate reality. Olivia was sucked into said alternate reality (or not the same one, we don't know) and met William Bell. In the World Trade Center towers. 8 years later and that's still a chilling sight.

Tonight we introduce a new recurring character that shall be referred to as The Shapeshifter. Said Shapeshifter is the one who hit Olivia in her car on the way to meet with Nina in New York. Over the course of the episode, he/she morphs into several different people but The Shapeshifter's ultimate goal is to find out what Olivia learned at her meeting (with William Bell) and then kill her.

Unfortunately, this culminates in The Shapeshifter killing Olivia's partner Charlie and assuming his appearance. While I'm sad about Charlie being dead and now the actor being a bad guy, it certainly adds a chilling element that WE know Charlie is The Shapeshifter but THEY don't know. Also, The Shapeshifter conveniently breaks his shape-shifting machine so that he is stuck as Charlie and we see Shapey throw Charlie's body in an incinerator, so I don't think he's a-comin' back.

In Olivia's Alternate Reality Jaunt news, Olivia can't remember anything from her visit with Spock. She knows she has to find something and that lives depend on it, but she can't remember what or where it is. That looks to be an on-going storyline too.

In the "Mystery" of the Week department, Washington DC wants to shut down Fringe Division. Agent "I would appreciate it if he would address me as Colonel or Sir. I believe I've earned it." Broyles chews some scenery and informs the suits that Fringe Division is vital to this country's security, but they don't actually win until Peter commandeers The Shapeshifter's face-changing device and gives it to Broyles as a bargaining chip. If they fix it, they can make an army that looks like whomever they want. Chilling, that.

In 'Shipper News, Peter is very upset when he thinks Olivia is dead from the car accident and her sister Rachel conveniently spills to him that Olivia likes him. Thankfully it didn't devolve into "Does she like me? Or does she like-like me?"

In the Peter Died at Age 7 department, Walter spends all episode making custard for Peter's birthday, even though grown-up Alternate Reality Peter says he doesn't like custard. Walter insists that he loved it as a boy. It's a small part for Walter this week, but John Noble does a lot with it. I can't wait to see where this goes. I bet Noble will just about break our hearts.

In the Weird Coincidence, when Olivia wakes up from her coma-like state she bursts out with some Greek. Peter recognizes it as something his mother used to say to him every night before bed. It means, "Be a better man than your father." It meant to them that you take care of the people you love because Walter had already left them. Why did Olivia say it? We don't know. Spooky.

Finally, new character Agent Jessup somehow garners access to the classified Fringe Division files. Where did she get that slip of paper with the password on it? I watched several times and couldn't figure it out. The one interesting thing she does is start cataloging last season's cases in accordance with Bible scriptures. I hope we revisit that.

Tonight on "Fringe," the monster is under the galdarn ground. Shame they couldn't get Kevin Bacon to cameo.

Mystery of the Week
The MO of this week's creepy crawlie reminds me quite a bit of the Grabvoids that terrorized Val, Earl and Reba in Perfection, Oklahoma. Suck people under the ground and eat them. It turns out that a local doctor's wife couldn't carry a child to term because of her severe lupus (dammit Otto, you have LUPUS!). So the doctor decided to inject their fetus with scorpion DNA. As one does. Fast forward 17 years. Scorpion Boy is all grown up and sucking people into the ground so he can eat them.

Earl: Is this a job for an intelligent man?
Val: Well, show me one and I'll ask him.

In swoops our intrepid team. They suss out the mystery and Peter and Olivia end up battling Scorpion Boy in the tunnels where it lives. Olivia is bitten but it does not seem to have any lasting effects. Speaking of Olivia...

Val: You will have long blonde hair, big green eyes, world class breasts, ass that won't quit and legs that go all the way up.

Olivia's Trip
What DID seem to have some lasting effects on Olivia is her little trip to "the other side." She has come back hyper-sensitive, hearing far-off conversations and the buzzing off flies and what not.She still can't remember anything, though, much to the consternation of Charlie.

Earl: No way those things can outrun these horses!
Val: Yeah, well, for all you know, they can fly.

The Shapeshifter/Charlie
Kirk Acevedo gets to really exercise his Eeeeeeevil Looks muscle this week, as he spends what little screentime he has glaring menacingly. He DOES talk to the Other Side via the very cool typewriter that I meant to mention last week and forgot about. Olivia is still the target, she can't remember, she trusts him, he is instructed to HELP her remember and we are left to wonder what kind of eeeeeeeevil things that entails next week.

From Zap2it By Andrea Reiher

Mystery of the Week
This week the mystery involves human bombs. There are Iraq veterans who were exposed to cyanogen chloride and the treatment to combat this neurotoxin was to inject themselves with a crystallizing serum. Except the serum can be made to explode via radio waves. So an eeeeevil Colonel sends these vets on suicide bomb missions and uses the radio frequency 331.6 to blow them up.

Our intrepid team figures it out and manages to save the second unbeknownst suicide-bomber from exploding, but the audience finds out right at the end that the briefcases the bomb targets were carrying contain data and photographs and one of the photos is of Walter Bishop. DUN DUN DUN. Apparently, there is a war coming and we don't know who the other side is but what they want is to exterminate us.

Olivia & Sam Weiss
Olivia goes to see Sam Weiss several more times. Apparently he helped Nina Sharp dip a french fry in ketchup, which is a lot harder than it sounds when you're sporting a robotic arm. He helps Olivia tie her shoes, he needles her, he eggs her on and when she finally gets fed up with his runaround, she stalks over to him and ****s her gun with nary an arm/hand tremble nor the use of her cane. Nobody effs with the Sam Weiss and Olivia abides.

From Zap2it By Andrea Reiher

Tonight on "Fringe," things are finally getting good. We have frozen heads, a great war coming and a love interest for Walter!

Mystery of the Week
Chicago, NYC and Boston all have cryogenic facilities robbed for some frozen heads. At the Boston one, a robber is killed mid-robbery and bleeds mercury (which I totally got to before Walter said it, thank you). He is also carrying the Shapeshifter device, which Agent Charlie is none too happy to see.

Charlie approaches one of the robbers about the man who was killed and in their conversation we find out that the Shapeshifter is dying because his device is gone and that he COULD use the robber's device but "what would be the point?" Innnteresting.

Olivia and Broyles hypothesize that the shapeshifting robbers are stealing heads because they are looking for a specific frozen head. I'm guessing either Walt Disney or Ted Williams.

Walter does some tests and finds out that the killed shapeshifter's blood is 47% mercury and the dead shapeshifter from the hospital (the nurse) has normal blood, which means she wasn't a shapeshifter at all. So apparently the Shapeshifter was the nurse, jumped Charlie, stole his form, stashed his body, then brought the nurse's body in from outside. That's fine and very plausible... if they didn't make it look via the editing like that happened in about 20 seconds. C'mon show.

Shapeshifter Charlie takes a trip to a drugstore, since his human body is failing him, and buys a bunch of thermometers. To drink the mercury. Ew. Meanwhile, the laboratory has a machine from Massive Dynamic that can recreate the image from the shapeshifting device.

Peter and Walter go visit Rebecca, the girl from the video who Walter and William experimented on. She can recognize the shapeshifters due to all the drugs they pumped her full of. She remembers Walter, hugs him and agrees to help them find shapeshifters. They use salvia to send Rebecca on a trip, but it's Olivia who blacks out when they ring the bell William Bell had in his office in the other world.

After the trip, Walter wants to drive Rebecca home. I'm about to get all grossed out by the dirty old man, except John Noble is only 9 years older than Theresa Russell. God, he looks about 20 years older.

Walter walks Rebecca to her door and apologizes for what he did to her when she was younger. She kisses him and reassures him that it wasn't. Awww.

Olivia's Trip
Walter has an idea about retrieving Olivia's memories from the auto accident. He wants her to eat flatworms so that she can transfer her memories. But it makes no sense because in the original experiment, flatworms were trained to respond to light and then they were pureed and fed to other flatworms who then started to respond to light. Under that hypothesis, Olivia should be pureed and fed to flatworms. What on earth would make him think it would work in reverse? Hmph.

Anyway, it works (of course) and she flashes back to the other world all episode. Then suddenly she remembers when a bell is rung. She informs Bell that the victims of their drug trials are not okay but he says she is just starting to come into her abilities. He then informs her that a war is coming and they need a guardian, someone to "watch the gate" between "this side and yours."

He then tells Olivia that "this side" has designed "the First Wave," a series of hybrids that are part human, part machine and can withstand the travel between the two worlds. Olivia then tells him off and demands the truth. He says the truth will come out and that she doesn't have to trust OR like him but that she's the strongest of all the children he and Walter prepared. He then shows her a symbol and says it's hidden on the leader's ear and gives Olivia the Latin phrase for Peter.

Back in her world, Olivia goes to see Nina Sharp and they discuss the symbol, which must be on the leader's head or else why would the shapeshifter's have been stealing frozen heads? Olivia tells Nina that the man with that mark is going to open a portal between the two worlds and the only way to fight him is for Olivia to find him before the shapeshifters do.

Nina informs Olivia that Dr. Bell had a theory that if the portal is opened and the two worlds collide, only one world can occupy the space at one time and the "last great storm" would erupt for which world was going to win.

Olivia then gets a text from Charlie that says, "Nina is the shapeshifter. Don't trust her. Get out now." Oh dear. Charlie grabs Olivia and she starts to tell him what's going on (including where the frozen head is they are looking for) when her phone gets an update on the Massive Dynamic machine's rendering of the shapeshifter. It's Charlie's face.

There's a fight and Olivia shoots Charlie several times, but not before he can relay her information of where the frozen head is. She is distraught about it, but Broyles assures her that it's not her fault and that thing she shot wasn't Charlie. He also informs her that Last & Hennings Cryonics (is that the name? I could NOT understand it) was robbed before the FBI got there so the shapeshifters have who they were looking for.

The frozen head is none other than... The Observer.

From Zap2it By Andrea Reiher

Mystery of the Week
Our MOTW takes us to Seattle, where a man (Mr. Leiter) is seeing regular people as monsters. It scares him enough to beat his boss senseless with his briefcase. He then slips into unconsciousness for 16 hours. He tells Olivia that he remembers going to work then he was on the floor in the office, being restrained. As he talks to Olivia, he has a sort-of fit, his hair goes an old-man white/texture and he flatlines.

Walter examines the body and determines that he died of acute exhaustion, which has been documented in rats. He wants to take the body back to Boston, but that's more because he's freaking out about being away from home. The man charged with flying him home is Agent Kashner (or Ethan from "Passions" and Keith from "Scrubs.") Love him.

Leiter's wife says that her husband had been working a lot and that he used to sleep walk but recently he'd been sleeping a lot. They find his dream journal, which details nightmares about demons, but the nightmares recently stopped.

Another body shows up, a woman who says she saw a monster and whose hair also went white. They find a mark on her neck which leads to a -bio chip in her head, same as the first victim. It works like a pacemaker, monitoring sleep cycles and if needed, stimulating the thalamus to induce deeper sleep cycles.

The team goes to visit Dr. Nayak (hey, it's Bug from "Crossing Jordan!") and discover that his patient files have been infiltrated. Apparently the chip is to cure non-REM sleep disorders but now it appears to have gone a bit off-kilter, since it makes people see demons and all. Peter hypothesizes that the chip can control motor function as well and it turns out the bad guys are doing just that, controlling mind and motor function of people with the chip implants from a remote location.

Walter decides to experiment with the chip on Agent Kashner. No students, after all. Heh heh. Walter wears the helmet to control Agent Kashner and it makes him feel like he's tripping on LSD. He realizes the biochips are "stealing dreams" and therefore turning on a dream state when the patients are awake, which explains the paranoia and violence. It becomes like a drug for the person receiving the stolen dreams.

Nayak's patient files are eventually gone because the server is wiped clean, Dr. Nayak's lab assistant is found dead and Nayak is threatened that he'll end up like the assistant if he doesn't stop talking to the Feds but it turns out HE'S the addict for the stolen dreams.

The team nabs him just as he is about to crash an airline because he's causing the pilot to be in a dream state via his bio-chip. They have to shoot the bio-chip computer, which kills Dr. Nayak. They think he turned the dials up on the computer on purpose to kill himself.

Olivia & Sam Weiss
Olivia is given another homework assignment by Sam. She has to collect business cards from everyone she sees wearing red. He then tells her to circle a letter from each name, first and last, from each card and then find the phrase in the jumble. She finds "you're gonna be fine," which she interprets as a message from Charlie.

Peter & Walter
Peter has a dream of being a little boy. He's asleep in his bed, Walter comes home and then Peter is snatched away (with a scary scream). He wakes up, relays the dream to Walter and says he doesn't remember the rest. So that's when Peter was snatched from one dimension to the other.
