Eyecon Report Part 4
Sunday, April 06, 2008:
For me Sunday started at 7:00 AM when I met Amy, Robin, and Karie and
we drove down the street to IHOP where we had breakfast which was
great. From there we went back to the hotel and lined up outside of
the "Heroes Ballroom" where Jared Padalecki's Q&A session was set to
take place at 9:00 AM.
While I waited something came over me and I paid $60 to have a photo
opportunity with Jared Padalecki. Out of all the cons I have ever
attended I had only ever done a photo op once before and that was with
Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner. I haven't done any since and vowed
I wouldn't but for some reason I decided to for Jared. I also
purchased for $30 a plaque that depicted all of the guests at this con.
Just after 9:00 the session Q&A began and after all of the girls
"squeed" we had a great session with Jared. I always liked Dean and
Sam on the show but after this session I have a new found respect for
Jared. He was so open and honest and you could tell he really enjoys
the fans. At one point he said that he works so he can do things like
this. He spoke about him and Jensen and when asked what they call one
another he said that he is often called "Stretch" on the set and that
he calls Jensen "Smeckles" which is quite funny. Jared also seemed to
get a kick out of the little kids who would ask him questions.
One of the funny things he did throughout was whenever people would
get the microphone and say their name he would say, "Hi (name) I'm
Jared" and you could see that he just was having so much fun. A few
of the fan girls gave him some gifts but one fan (who was at my table
for dinner) presented him with pictures she drew of his dogs (Jared
has two dogs) and you could just tell Jared was truly touched by this
and he said he would take them to Vancouver with him especially since
Harley (his one dog who recently had surgery) was not with him in
Vancouver but with Sandy while it recovers. Jared received a few
gifts including a touching gift of a t-shirt for him and Jensen from a
woman who said she lost her husband and Supernatural helped her in her
healing. Jared came off the stage and hugged her as she gave him the
shirts and you just could tell it was genuine. Another fan bought him
a board game (I think it was Disney Trivial Pursuit) since Sandy said
they enjoy board games.
I learned from friends that Jared was very nice to the people he had
breakfast with which turned out to be four people. Originally Jared
was to be at the banquet and there was an eBay auction for the seats
on either side of him which went for over a thousand dollars. Since
he couldn't make it until late Saturday night they offered those two
people who won the seats to attend the breakfast as well. From what I
heard after an hour they came to get Jared from the breakfast and he
asked if they were late for the next event. When the promoters said
no that there was time before the Q&A session, Jared said there was no
need for him to leave then and he stayed with the fans who had won the
tickets for the breakfast—yet another example of how nice and genuine
of a guy he is.
After the Q&A session, Jared's Photo Op started but I decided to go
back to my hotel room and put my dress clothes that I wore to the
banquet the night before on since I was having my picture taken. I
got in line after I got changed and it was a long line but again I got
to see what a great person Jared was. I typically don't go all fan
boy for stars because I know they are deep down people just like
everyone else. So as I approached him I shook his hand and he stood
up (since he's so tall he sat on a chair for most of the photo ops)
but since I'm 6'2" and he's like 6'4" 6'5" he stood up next to me. He
asked my name and when I said "Jace" he said something like "ok now we
officially have met" and he proceeded to put his arm around me as we
smiled for the photo. Again, I've been to several cons and met quite
a few stars and I could just sense how genuine Jared is—he's not full
of himself and you can tell he loves being with his fans.
Me and the girls then went down and got some lunch in the food court
again. I went to the KFC/A&W stand and got chicken strips with
coleslaw.
After that we went to the Heroes Ballroom and sat down to wait for the
Jared Padalecki and Jim Beaver autograph session. We sat in our
assigned seats and waited to be called up and it seemed like it was
taking forever. They started picking up the pace because they were
getting worried since Jared had to catch a plane to go back to
continue shooting.
While I waited I ran over to where I had the photo op and by then my
picture was printed and I picked it up. It wasn't too bad and came
out well.
I got a picture I bought at the creation table signed. We were asked
to have our picture ready, the spelling of our name, and our ticket
out. I put out my badge that Karie had made for our group since it
said "Jace" on it and showed it to Jared so he had the spelling down.
He said, "short for Jason right?" and I was like yeah and he asked
how long I went by that nickname and I said about five years and then
I had to move on cause the next person was ready for their autograph
but I thanked Jared and he thanked me for coming (something he did
quite often to fans).
After the autograph, the convention was basically over but we gathered
as many folks as we could from the yahoo group for a group photo. As
we were sitting there Jared walked out and we said goodbye and thanked
him and he again thanked us and was friendly as he walked past (again
something most stars wouldn't do). A little while later Jim Beaver
walked out and the girls from our group ran up and hugged him. I
smiled and said "I won't hug you Jim" and he replied, "oh my loss
then"! LOL. He was a great guy too.
We took our group photo and then I came back to the hotel and took a
nap since I was exhausted. I got up and took a shower and then Amy,
Robin and I met in the lobby and waited for Karie. We saw Jim Beaver
sitting with another guy walk in from the mall and they sat in the
lobby. We didn't disturb him since I considered that he was on his
own time and didn't need fans coming up to him after how nice he was
all weekend but two fans did disturb him (he was nice to them as
always). Karie then picked us up and we went to Bennigans for dinner.
After dinner I am sitting in the hotel room writing this report. My
flight leaves Sunday at 6:55 PM and I'm due in at 9:20. It will be a
late Monday night for me and I am going back to work Tuesday morning.
Overall I am glad I came to this convention. The highlight was
meeting all the folks I know from the yahoo group Supernatural on the
WB. It's always great to meet online friends and I formed friendships
here that I know will be lasting friendships. Jared, Jim and the
other stars were the other highlight.
