Sk8 Safer Hey guys I am a product designer working on my B-Tech thesis, and I am going to be doing it on DH Sk8ing Safety Equipment (Helmet, Pads, Gloves and Leathers). I do a bit of DH sk8ing but only carving and some sliding, so I have the background knowledge, but I need your input to do my thesis and that is were you guys come in - with your help I will have more than only my opinion.
So now it starts and i need opinions, problems, suggestions etc. on any of your safety equipment.
Re: Sk8 Safer I did my b-tech three years ago in mechanical engineering. Maybe I can help you with a thing or two? Or even send you in the right direction! I know there is a huge demand for SAFE aerodynamic helmets for both Street Luge and Stand-up. Just send me a mail and we can have a talk. Russell
Re: Sk8 Safer Thanks I will definitly make use of all the help I can get, and will chat to you as soon as I get to the concept stage which would hopefully be halfway through the year.
Thanks.
Re: Sk8 Safer Is there any thing that bugs you guy when using it...gloves that moves on your hand or pads or any of those small problems? The other thing is materials, what about ceramic for the glove that does not were down on tarmac?
Helmets!!!! The other day we had a rider go down in one of the Out Law races, what exactly happened I don’t know, but as far as I under stand this helmet came of in a crash.
The other thing is weight, yet again on the helmets. Look at materials such as carbon fibber and Kevlar. But with these types of materials come money and a lot of it. See if it will be possible to manufacture a helmet, which is light yet cheap… Way cheap? Because most of the DH community does not have a cent on there name.
I think that padding is not such a big deal because I don’t see many riders use them. I don’t!
You will have to talk to Justin and them about the gloves for Stand up. What I have found with gloves is that I struggle to find proper gloves that have good grip for the push of at the start. (For street luge) Usually the only gloves with grip are the gardening type but then again they don’t have any safety properties.
Re: Sk8 Safer Hey guys i am looking into the protective suit (leathers) at the moment and would like some comments on the following ideas:
I am thinking of putting restraints in the suit that will prevent your limbs from going were their not supposed to go, and maybe a webbing under the arms for better air braking, and some support around the ankels and wrists.
Re: Sk8 Safer Dude the restraints in the suit is an awesome idea to revolutionize downhill skating leather suits. It's an interesting idea that has the possibility of pushing the downhill industry and making it more downhill racing orientated.
Re: Sk8 Safer Hi guys! I also started a blog on silver fish and have had a great response, so please go and ad your 5c to the pot and get them talking some more. You can find it under Forum - General Discusion - General Longboarding - Sk8 Safer.
