2006 Malaysian Open results; Lee Chong Wei (MAL) and Zhang Ning (CHN) retain titles

Men's Singles

In a closely contested match against the top two ranked players in the world and a repeat of the All-England semi-final, defending champion Lee Chong Wei (MAS) captured his third straight Malaysian Open singles title with a 21-18,18-21,23-21 victory against World No. 1 Lin Dan (CHN). Incidentally, Lin Dan was also last year's finalist and lost narrowly to Lee Chong Wei in that final which was still using the old scoring system. This year's final implemented the new scoring system but Lee Chong Wei still prevailed albeit with a tighter scoreline. Lee played the big points better at the crucial stage with the home crowd fully behind him.

In the semi-finals, Lee Chong Wei came from a set down to beat Lee Hyun Il (KOR) 2-1 whilst Lin Dan crushed his up-and-coming compatriot Chen Jin 21-15,21-11. Chen Jin had upset Peter Gade (DEN), who won the Singapore Open title last week, in three sets (21-15,13-21,21-8) in the quarter-finals.

Women's Singles

Olympic champion Zhang Ning (CHN) easily disposed World Championship quarter-finalist Tracey Hallam (ENG) 21-12,21-13 to retain her Malaysian Open title. Halam had stunned World Champion Xie Xingfang (CHN) 6-21,24-22,21-18 in the semis but Zhang Ning was able to control the match throughout in the final. Zhang Ning eliminated Wang Chen (HKG) 21-16,21-11 in the other semi-final.

Doubles

In an all-Malaysian men's doubles final, Malaysia's No. 2 doubles pair Koo Kien Keat-Chan Chong Ming (MAS) defeated their No. 3 compatriots Mohd Tazari Mohd Fairuzizuan-Lin Woon Fui (MAS) 14-21,21-11,21-17.

In the women's doubles final, Gao Ling-Huang Sui (CHN) started off slow and lost the first set 9-21. However, they're still head and shoulders above their younger compatriots Du Jing-Yu Yang (CHN) in terms of both skills and experience and rallied to take the next two sets 21-16,21-17.

Olympic champions Zhang Jun-Gao Ling (CHN) came through in three sets 19-21,21-14,21-15 against World No. 21 Jonas Rasmussen-Britta Andersen (DEN) in the mixed doubles final.
