2006 China Masters: Dark horses, Chen Jin (CHN) and Wang Lin (CHN), rule the court

Dark horses rule the court at the 2006 Aviva-Cofco China Badminton Masters held in Chengdu, China. Two-time World Junior Champion Chen Jin (CHN) downed veteran Peter Gade Christensen (DEN) 21-19,21-14 to take the men's singles title. In the first set, Chen Jin fought his way back from 6-11 down to hold four set points at 20-16; Peter Gade smashed his way to pull within a point but an error gave the set to Chen Jin. Chen Jin was even more spirited in the second set and played brilliantly to win 21-14. In the semi-finals, Chen Jin eliminated Kenneth Jonassen (DEN) whilst Peter Gade finally overcame nemesis Lin Dan (CHN) 21-18,19-21,21-18 with some help from the new scoring system.

17 year-old Wang Lin (CHN) stunned reigning World Champion Xie Xingfang (CHN) 15-21,21-13,21-15 in the women's singles final. Xie Xingfang took the initiative first with her finely executed shots to win the first set. Wang Lin covered the court well and played a well-rounded game to defeat Xie. Wang Lin, whose idol is Olympic and World Champion Taufik Hidayat (INA), had a amazing run to the final by ousting several top-ranked players, including Olympic champion Zhang Ning (CHN), Asian champion Wang Chen (HKG) and Yao Jie (NED). Xie Xingfang advanced to the final by taking down two-time Olympic finalist Mia Audina (NED).

In other finals, All-England champions Martin Lundgaard-Jens Eriksen (DEN) defeated World Cup champions Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun (CHN) 21-17,21-17 to win the men's doubles title; Gao Lin-Huang Sui (CHN) defeated Wei Yili-Zhang Yawen (CHN) 21-12,18-21,21-14 in the women's doubles final and World Cup champions Xie Zhongbo-Zhang Yawen (CHN) defeated Olympic champions Zhang Jun-Gao Ling (CHN) 21-16,10-21,22-20 in the mixed doubles final.
