The top seven seeds in the men's singles event made it to the quarter-finals. Eighth seed Muhd Hafiz B Hashim (MAL) fell to veteran Lee Hyun-Il (KOR) 11-15,5-15. The upcoming clash between the top badminton stars would be a joy to watch.

Re: 2005 Badminton World Championships Latest Results and Updates

World No. 1 Lin Dan (CHN), Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat (INA), veteran Peter Gade (DEN) and in-form dark horse Lee Chong Wei (MAL) advanced to the men's singles semis.

Lin Dan shrugged off a bad start to overcome his opponent in three sets. Hidayat faced the same problem, going a set down to Jonassen. He was trailing again in the second set but played some delicate shots at the net to control the game. With Jonassen's fitness waning in the third, Hidayat moved him around the court and executed crosscourt smashes to clinch the match.

Peter Gade had a much easier time against Chen Hong who looked out of sorts, making many unforced errors, 23 to Gade's 10. Lee Chong Wei varied his attacking game with good net play to defeat Bao Chunlai. He recorded 12 smash winners against Bao's 5 and made less unforced errors (18-29).

Quarter-final Results
Lin Dan - Lee Hyun Il 5-15,15-7,15-8
Taufik Hidayat - Kenneth Jonassen 3-15,15-10,15-7
Peter Gade - Chen Hong 15-13,15-4
Lee Chong Wei - Bao Chunlai 15-5,15-7

Reigning Olympic and World Champion Zhang Ning (CHN), World No. 2 Xie Xingfang (CHN), 6th seeded German Champion Xu Huaiwen (GER) and World Junior Champion Cheng Shao Chieh (TPE) reached the women's singles semis. While Zhang and Xie were expected to win, Xu Huaiwen used the windy conditions to her advantage and topple 3rd seed Pi Hongyan (FRA); the fit and agile rookie Cheng also surprised 4th seed Wang Chen in three sets.

Quarter-final Results
Zhang Ning (CHN) - Kaori Mori (JPN) 11-4,11-6
Xu Huaiwen (GER) - Pi Hongyan (FRA) 11-3,11-2
Xie Xingfang (CHN) - Tracey Hallam (GBR) 11-3,11-1
Cheng Shao Chieh (TPE) - Wang Chen (HKG) 11-9,5-11,11-6

The American duo of Tony Gunawan and Howard Bach (USA) continued their stunning march into the men's doubles semi-finals with an upset victory over top seed Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen (DEN). Gunawan's experience and range of shots meshed well with Bach's energtic and passionate approach, completely unsettling the Danish pair in straight sets. They are now assured of an unexpected World Championships medal and will face the 4th seed Luluk Hadiyanto-Yulianto Alven (INA) for a dream final berth.

In a repeat match-up of 2003 World Championships final, Candra Wijaya-Sigit Budiarto (INA) turned the tables on defending World Champion Lars paaske-Jonas Rasmussen (DEN) in a three setter. The Malaysian pair of Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat maintained their fine run with another upset win over the Olympic bronze medalists Limpele-Eng Hian.

Quarter-final Results
Tony Gunawan-Howard Bach (USA) - Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen (DEN) 15-9,15-10
Luluk Hadiyanto-Yulianto Alven (INA) - Jung Jae-sung-Lee Jae-jin (KOR) 15-5,12-15,15-7
Candra Wijaya-Sigit Budiarto (INA) - Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen (DEN) 15-10,11-15,15-9
Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat (MAL) - Flandi Limpele-Eng Hian (INA) 6-15,15-12,15-10

The women's doubles final will be an all-Chinese affair as expected - Olympic champion Yang Wei-Zhang Jiewen conceded only 7 points against Korean opponents Lee Kyung-won-Lee Hyo-jung; defending World Champion Gao Ling-Huang Sui fended off the challenge of young compatriots Zhang Dan-Zhang Yawen.

Semi-Final Results
Yang Wei-Zhang Jiewen (CHN) - Lee Kyung-won-Lee Hyo-jung (KOR) 15-4,15-3
Gao Ling-Huang Sui (CHN) - Zhang Dan-Zhang Yawen (CHN) 15-5,15-8

There were some upsets in the mixed doubles quarter-finals. Olympic Champions Zhang Jun-Gao Ling lost to 7th seed Sudket Prapkamol-Saralee Thungthongkam (THA) in three sets. The Chinese pair made 40 unforced errors compared to 30 by their opponents. The Thai pair dominated the net and forced the Chinese pair to play a defensive game which is inconducive in the windy hall.

15th seed Daniel A Shirley and Sara Runesten-Petersen (NZL) pulled off an upset against Lee Jae-jin-Lee Hyo-jung (KOR) while 11th seed Xie Zhongbo-Zhang Yawen (CHN) defeated 3rd seed Chen Qiqiu-Zhao Tingting (CHN).

Quarter-finals Results
Sudket Prapkamol-Saralee Thungthongkam (THA) - Zhang Jun-Gao Ling (CHN) 10-15,15-7,15-11
Nova Widianto-Lilyana Natsir (INA) - Frederik Bergstrom-Johanna Persson (SWE) 15-6,15-6
Xie Zhongbo-Zhang Yawen (CHN) - Chen Qiqiu-Zhao Tingting (CHN) 6-15,17-14,15-2
Daniel A Shirley-Sara Runesten-Petersen (NZL) - Lee Jae-jin-Lee Hyo-jung (KOR) 15-11,15-13

The highly anticipated men's singles match-up between the top seed Lin Dan (CHN) and Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat (INA) materialises after the semi-finals. Lin Dan survived a close fight against European champion Peter Gade (DEN) in three sets whilst Hidayat avenged a recent defeat at the Malaysia Open by defeating Lee Chong Wei (MAL) in straight sets. Hidayat controlled the match with excellent net play and was confident of winning the title in the final, for his supporters.

Semi-Final Results
Lin Dan (CHN) - Peter Gade (DEN) 15-9,13-15,15-11
Taufik Hidayat (INA) - Lee Chong Wei (MAL) 15-3,15-12

The top two Chinese players, World No. 1 Zhang Ning and World No. 2 Xie Xingfang, will meet in the women's singles final. Zhang Ning faced Xu Huaiwen (GER) for the first time in international tournaments but was able to wear down her opponent using her variety of shots. She however revealed she wasn't pleased with her game because she made too many unforced errors. Xie Xingfang overcame strong resistance from World Junior Champion Cheng Shao Chieh (TPE) in three sets. Cheng shocked her more prominent competitor in the first set and even led 6-3 in the rubber set but Xie raised her game a notch to grab 8 points in a row for victory.

Semi-Final Results
Zhang Ning (CHN) - Xu Huaiwen (GER) 11-7,11-9
Xie Xingfang (CHN) - Cheng Shao Chieh (TPE) 2-11,11-5,11-6

The surprise package of this championships, Tony Gunawan-Howard Bach (USA), continued to stun their higher seeded opponents with their remarkable streak having not lost a single set. With the crowd rallying behind them, the American pair toppled the 4th seed Hadiyanto-Alven (INA) in straight sets again. They will face the top Indonesian pair Candra Wijaya-Sigit Budiarto in the final.

Semi-Final Results
Tony Gunawan-Howard Bach (USA) - Luluk Hadiyanto-Yulianto Alven (INA) 15-9,15-13
Candra Wijaya-Sigit Budiarto (INA) - Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat (MAL) 15-9,15-11

Women's Doubles Final

Olympic champion Yang Wei-Zhang Jiewen (CHN) added the World title to their collection after defeating defending champion Gao Ling-Huang Sui (CHN) 17-16,15-7 in the final.

In the mixed doubles semis, Xie Zhongbo-Zhang Yawen (CHN) defeated Daniel Shirley-Sara Runesten (NZL) in straight sets whilst 4th seed Widianto-Natsir (INA) emerged winner in three sets against the tough pair of Sudket Prapkamol-Saralee Thungthongkam (THA).

The IBF World Championships ended with Indonesia and China taking two titles each, and USA taking one.

IBF World Championships Past Winners emoticon and Runners-up emoticon ( Updated for 2005 )

Men's Singles Final
Taufik Hidayat (INA) - Lin Dan (CHN) 15-3,15-7

Instead of a closely contested final, Olympic champion Hidayat totally dominated in this one-sided men's singles match. Lin Dan had no answer to Hidayat's well executed net play and pounding smashes. The skillful Hidayat has now become the first man in history to hold both Olympic and World titles in the men's singles. Both players were playing in their first World Championships final, but Hidayat has the slight edge in exposure to major finals with his Athens Olympics experience.

Women's Singles Final
Xie Xingfang (CHN) - Zhang Ning (CHN) 11-8,9-11,11-3

Xie Xingfang added the world crown to her All-England title by defeating Zhang Ning in the women's singles final. The women's singles final is an all-Chinese affair and has been this way three times in a row. Zhang Ning had already won the 2004 Olympic gold medal and the world title back in 2003, so Xie Xingfang is clearly the hungrier of the two for a major world title, unleashing her smashes early in the rubber set to race to gold.

Men's Doubles Final
Tony Gunawan-Howard Bach (USA) - Candra Wijaya-Sigit Budiarto (INA) 15-11,10-15,15-11

Tony Gunawan and Howard Bach ended their dream run with a gold medal, with a hard-fought but well-deserved victory over the 2nd-seeded Indonesian pair. This is also the first time the USA has won a world title in badminton. The talented Gunawan has now won two titles (the previous in 2001 for Indonesia), playing with different partners for different countries. Wijaya-Budiarto has to contend with silver yet again, having lost in the final two years ago, although they had won the title back in 1997.

Mixed Doubles Final
Nova Widianto-Lilyana Natsir (INA) - Xie Zhongbo-Zhang Yawen (CHN) 13-15,15-8,15-2

The top Indonesian pair lost the first set to the young Chinese pair but their experience brought them back. They raced to a 5-0 lead early in the rubber set from Xie-Zhang's mistakes and built on that lead to 10-0, then 15-2 to win their first world title.
