posticon 2006 Thomas Cup and Uber Cup Results and Updates

Thomas Cup

Malaysia defeated South Korea in a quarter-final match but lost one of their top singles player Wong Choong Hann through injury. Indonesia had to overcome the resistance of Japan before making the semi-finals; Olympic and World Champion Taufik Hidayat (INA) lost to Shoji Sato (JPN) in the first singles but Indonesia's overall strength overwhelmed the host team.

Semi-finals

Defending champion China reached the Thomas Cup final with a 3-0 win against Indonesia. All-England Champion Lin Dan (CHN) avenged his World Championship defeat with a 2-0 thumping of Olympic Champion Taufik Hidayat (INA). World Cup Champions Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun (CHN) then defeated Worlds semi-finalists Luluk Hadiyanto-Yulianto Alven (INA) to give China a 2-0 lead. Hadiyanto-Alven had their chances in the first set but just couldn't deliver the big points. After taking the first set in the second singles, Bao Chunlai (CHN) made an astonishing comeback from 6-15 in the second set to defeat former Asian Champion Sony Dwi Kuncoro (INA).

Denmark struggled to a narrow 3-2 win in the semi-final against Malaysia. European Champion Peter Gade (DEN) scored the first point for Denmark over World No. 2 Lee Chong Wei (MAS). Worlds semi-finalists Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat (MAS) levelled the score at 1-1 with an upset victory over World No. 1 and reiging All-England champions Jens Eriksen-Martin Lungaard Hansen (DEN). Chan and Koo had some problems during the match where they were shown a red card from the umpire but still prevailed. World No. 5 Kenneth Jonassen (DEN) clawed back from a set down against former All-England Champion Muhd Hafiz B Hashim (MAS) to help Denmark edge ahead by one point. All-England finalists Choong Tan Fook,Lee Wan Wah (MAS) set up the final showdown in the third singles with a very close 2-1 win against World No. 4 Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen (DEN). Kuan Beng Hong (MAS) was expected to defeat Joachim Persson (DEN) but Persson played an aggressive game with less errors to dominate Kwan in straight sets.

The Chinese Taipei doubles team snatched victory from World No. 3 Lee Kyung Won-Lee Hyo Jung in three sets to seal the win for Chinese Taipei. Kaori Mori (JPN) upset Mia Audina Tjiptawan (NED) in the first singles but the Netherlands team fought back to win and reach the semi-finals.
