Men's Singles:

32nd seed and former French Open Champion Carlos Moya (ESP) became the first seed in the men's singles to crash out of the tournament, losing to Andrei Pavel (ROM) in five sets. 4th seed David Nalbandian (ARG) survived another five-setter to move into the next round. With the absence of the likes of World No.2 Rafael Nadal, defending champion Marat Safin (RUS) and tennis legend Andre Agassi (USA), loss of any big names in the early rounds could dent the ratings of this tournament.

Women's Singles:

Wimbledon champion Venus Williams (USA) and 9th seed Elena Dementieva (RUS) were stunned in the first round by little-known Tszvetana Pironkova (BUL) and Julia Schruff (GER) respectively. Williams lost 6-2,0-6,7-9 whilst Dementieva lost in straight sets 5-7,2-6.

Other seeds which fell in the first round :

26th seed Ai Sugiyama (JPN) lost to former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez Granados (ESP) 4-6,3-6.

28th seed Anabel Medina Garriques (ESP) lost to Zuzana Ondraskova (CZE) 3-6,4-6.

Men's Singles Quarter-Finals

Top seed Roger Federer (SUI) suffered another scare when he had to scrape through two tie-breakers before overcoming 5th seed Nikolay Davydenko (RUS) 6-4,3-6,7-6,7-6. 21st seed Nicolas Kiefer (GER) also battled past a tenacious Sebastien Grosjean (FRA) in five sets to reach the semi-finals.

4th seed David Nalbandian (ARG), one of the few players who dealt Federer a defeat last year, crushed unseeded Fabrice Santoro (FRA) 7-5,6-0,6-0. He will take on another unseeded player Marcos Baghdatis (CYP) who scalped another top seed, 7th seed Ivan Ljubicic (CRO), 3-2 after knocking out 2nd seed Andy Rod**** in his previous match.

Women's Singles Quarter-Finals

Top seed Lindsay Davenport (USA), last year's finalist, was eliminated by French Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne (FRA) 6-2,2-6,3-6. Maria Sharapova (RUS) also advanced to the semi-finals with a 7-6,6-4 victory over compatriot Nadia Petrova (RUS) despite some complaints about her loud grunts on-court.

3rd seed Amelie Mauresmo (FRA) handed 7th seed Patty Schnyder (SUI) a bagel in a quarter-final match, overwhelming her opponent 6-3,6-0. 2nd seed and favourite for the title Kim Clijsters (BEL) survived a resistant challenge from another Swiss, former winner Martina Hingis (SUI). Hingis trailed 3-6,0-2 before reeling in the next six games to take the second set 6-2. In the deciding set, Clijsters went up 3-1 again but Hingis broke back to level at 3-3. Clijsters then kicked into another gear, started to overpower Hingis and ended the match winning 6-4.

Men's Singles Semi-Finals

Roger Federer (SUI), who won in 2004, rolled past Nicolas Kiefer (GER) 6-3,5-7,6-0,6-2 to reach the 2006 Australian Open men's singles final. He would be bidding for his third straight Grand Slam title, having won the Wimbledon and US Open last year.

While Federer was expected to make the final, Marcos Baghdatis (CYP) continued to shock everyone by upsetting another top seed to reach the final. Baghdatis stunned 4th seed David Nalbandian with an amazing comeback from two sets down, to win 3-6,5-7,6-3,6-4,6-4.

Women's Singles Semi-Finals

Also a Australian Open winner in 2004, 8th seed Justine Henin-Hardenne (BEL) took down 4th seed Maria Sharapova (RUS) 4-6,6-1,6-4 to reach her fifth career Grand Slam final. Henin-Hardenne has won four of those Grand Slam finals, losing only in her first at Wimbledon in 2001. She will face 3rd seed Amelie Mauresmo (FRA) who was leading 2nd seed Kim Clijsters (BEL) 5-7,6-2,3-2 before Clijsters withdrew due to injury. Mauresmo was also a finalist back in 1999 when she lost to Martina Hingis (SUI) who made a comeback this year.

Men's Singles Final

Roger Federer (SUI) stopped the giant-killing feats of unseeded Marcos Baghdatis (CYP) with a 5-7,7-5,6-0,6-2 win in the final. Federer has now won three straight Grand Slam tournaments and will be gunning for the French Open title to complete his Grand Slam.

Women's Singles Final

3rd seed Amelie Mauresmo (FRA) captured her first ever Grand Slam title when 8th seed Justine Henin-Hardenne retired early in the second set due to sickness. Mauresmo nevertheless had a big lead (6-1,2-0) in the match so she fully deserved her title.
