posticon 2005 US Open Latest Summary Report, Results and Updates

2005 Australian Open champion Marat Safin (RUS) has pulled out of the US Open, citing an knee injury. It's a pity since he's only one of three players who have dealt Roger Federer (SWI) a defeat in 2005; the other two being Richard Gasquet (FRA) and French Open champion Rafael Nadal (ESP). Federer is entering the US Open on a high, winning the ATP Cincinnati Masters recently.

Men's Singles Semi-Finals

Top-ranked Roger Federer (SUI) is on course to defend his US Open title after slaying Lleyton Hewitt (AUS) 6-3,7-6(7-0),4-6,6-3 in the semi-finals. He'll take on the challenge from two-time former champion Andre Agassi (USA) who saw off Robby Ginepri (USA) 6-4,5-7,6-3,4-6,6-3 but it won't be easy for the reigning King despite a good win-loss record against 35 year-old Agassi; the home crowd will be fully behind the veteran and Agassi is afterall the sentimental favourite, even among non-Americans.

Women's Singles

Kim Clijsters (BEL) finally embraced her first Grand Slam title after all these years as Grand Slam finalists. She defeated Mary Pierce (FRA) easily (6-3,6-1) to join Henin as the Belgian duo to win Grand Slam titles this year; the other two (Aust and Wimbledon) went to the William sisters (USA), quite the deja vu from 2003 where the William sisters were on par with the Belgian girls in terms of Grand Slam performances; Henin and Serena Williams won two Grand Slam titles each in 2003, and Clijsters and Venus Williams were finalists.

Even though she failed to shine in this final, Mary Pierce has nevertheless had a wonderful Grand Slam year, as the finalist in two Grand Slam tournaments (French and US). World No. 2 Davenport also reached two Grand Slam finals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2005.

Men's Singles Final

Roger Federer (SUI) successfully defended his US Open title by defeating tennis legend Andre Agassi (USA) 6-3,2-6,7-6(7-1),6-2. Federer won two Grand Slam titles and only lost 3 matches this year; he made the semi-finals at the other two Grand Slams (Aust and French Open), losing only to the eventual winner both times. Agassi praised Federer as the best player he has played against in a post-match interview.
