Re: Tennis: 2006 French Open Results and Latest Updates
Men's Singles
All the top four seeds made the semi-finals.
Top seed Roger Federer demonstrated his improving finesse on clay with an easy 6-4,6-3,6-4 win over 12th seed Mario Ancic (CRO). Defending champion Rafael Nadal (ESP) was swift and sharp going 6-4,6-4 up in the match against Novak Djokovic (SCG), before Djokovic retired due to a back injury. 3rd seed David Nalbandian (ARG) faced a much tougher match against 6th seed Nikolay Davydenko (RUS) but still prevailed 6-3,6-3,2-6,6-4. 4th seed Ivan Ljubicic (CRO) dominated his quarter-final match against Julien Benneteau (FRA) 6-2,6-2,6-3.
Women's Singles
Only 2nd-seeded US Open champion Kim Clijsters (BEL) reached the quarter-finals amongst the top four seeds, and she survived in a 7-6,6-1 match against former World No. 1 Martina Hingis (SUI)[12] to reach the semis. Defending champion Justine Henin-Hardenne (BEL)[5] ousted Anna-Lena Groenefeld (GER)[13] 7-5,6-2 to set up an all-Belgian semi-final against Clijsters. 16th seed Nicole Vaidisova (CZE) continued her dream run with a 6-7,6-1,6-3 upset of Wimbledon champion Venus Williams (USA)[11]. Former US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS)[8], who appeared to have regained her former spark recently, downed compatriot Dinara Safina (RUS)[14] 7-6,6-0 to reach the semi-finals.

Re: Tennis: 2006 French Open Results and Latest Updates
Men's Singles
The awaited showdown between Nadal the King on clay and King Federer, who's seeking to complete a Grand Slam, has materialised. Roger Federer (SUI) moved into his first French Open final after 3rd seed David Nalbandian (ARG) retired due to injury; Federer was leading 3-6,6-4,5-2. Rafael Nadal (ESP) rolled past 4th seed Ivan Ljubicic (CRO) 6-4,6-2,7-6 in the other semi-final. Nadal and Federer have met several times on clay this season and although Nadal won in all their encounters, Federer was also getting closer each time they played. The question for the final will be whether Nadal can retain his French Open title with an unbeatable winning streak on claycourt or will Federer achieve the Grand Slam by seizing this rare opportunity to win on his worst surface. Regardless of the outcome, Nadal will still remain the King of clay for this season and amongst current players. Similarly, even if Federer falter at the final hurdle, his Grand Slam records on each surface are still very remarkable.
Women's Singles
Defending champion Justine Henin-Hardenne (BEL) dominated her semi-final match against 2nd seed Kim Clijsters (BEL) to win 6-3,6-2. 8th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) halted the run of dark horse Nicole Vaidisova (CZE) 5-7,7-6,6-2 in the other semi-final with an ace on match-point.

Re: Tennis: 2006 French Open Results and Latest Updates
2006 French Open Women's Singles Final
Justine Henin-Hardenne captured her third French Open title with a convincing 6-4,6-4 win against Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS). It was also her second title in a row. The two finalists were evenly matched but Henin-Hardenne played the important points better and was more consistent. Kuznetsova relied on her powerful strokes to unsettle Henin-Hardenne but had trouble hitting within the lines. Kuznetsova even went up 2-0 early in the second set, which raised anticipation for a thrilling third set, but Henin-Hardenne broke right back to remain competitive in that set. Henin-Hardenne had a far lower 1st-serve percentage than her opponent but also made less unforced errors.
Latest Grand Slam records.

Re: Tennis: 2006 French Open Results and Latest Updates
2006 French Open Men's Singles Final
Rafael Nadal (ESP) successfully defended his French Open title and also extended his winning streak on clay to 60 matches. Nadal started slow and fell 1-6 to Roger Federer (SUI) in the first set, but regrouped to pull even in the second set (6-1). Nadal dictated the rallies in the next two sets to clinch a 1-6,6-1,6-4,6-4 victory. Federer made many more unforced errors in the last three sets compared to Nadal and that cost him his first French Open title and the Non-Calendar-Year Grand Slam. To have a better chance next year, Federer will need to strengthen his game with more power in his shots.
