Re: Tennis: 2005 Wimbledon Results and Latest Updates

Women's Singles

- Five of the top 8 seeds made it into the quarter-finals, with the remaining three places going to 9th seed Anastasia Myskina (RUS), 12th seed Mary Pierce (FRA) and 14th seed Venus Williams (USA). 2004 French Open champion Myskina has done well on the grasscourts so far while former Wimbledon champion Venus Williams is returning to her best. The quarter-finals should be very exciting with all the big names.

- Lindsay Davenport (USA) defeated Kim Clijsters (BEL) twice in a row at the Grand Slam tournaments, denying Clijsters a quarter-final berth at Roland Garros and at Wimbledon.

- Defending champion Maria Sharapova (RUS) rolled into the quarter-finals without losing a set. Her compatriot Nadia Petrova looked rather comfortable on the grasscourts too, having had a fine run on clay to reach the 2005 French Open semi-finals. These two Russian girls will clash for a semi-final berth.

- Third seed Amelie Mauresmo (FRA) also powered her way into the quarter-finals without conceding a set. Her countrywoman Mary Pierce played surprisingly well here, having reached the French Open final this year.

Women's Singles Quarter-finals

- The top three seeds moved into the semi-finals with straight set victories.

- Three of the four semi-finalists are former champions : Davenport, Sharapova and V. Williams. Mauresmo, 2004 Wimbledon semi-finalist, has never reached a Wimbledon final (WS) but the grass courts suit her game so she will be a formidable opponent for World No. 1 Davenport. With four great grasscourt players up against each other, the semi-finals will certainly be intense.
