ATP Masters Pacific Life Cup semi-finals : Federer and Hewitt through to finals for showdown

In the semi-finals of ATP 2005 Master Series Pacific Life Cup (Indian Wells), top-ranked Federer used an hour and 12 mins to dispose Canas 6-3, 6-1 and reach the finals to defend his crown. Argentine Canas has faced Federer only once, taking a win that time back in 2002. However three years later, Federer has emerged as a tennis legend. This season, besides an Australian Open semi-finals defeat at the hands of eventual winner Safin, the Swiss has yet to taste defeat. His win/loss record stands at 25-1 this season, having 41 of his last 42 matches.

Federer played a great baseline game and knocked in several crucial aces. Canas was sent all across the court and although he broke the Swiss once in the first set, numerous unforced errors pulled him down. The Argentine gave away eleven breakpoints which Federer converted five. Federer will face Hewitt in the finals, hoping to extend his 16-match finals winning streak and 15 match winning run since the Australian Open defeat.

In the other semi-finals, second-seeded Aussie Hewitt fought a gruelling 2 hr 33 mins match before prevailing 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 over American Rod****. These two seasoned opponents fought point-for-point, game-for-game throughout the match. Both have been ranked top in the world and their win/loss records this season are also the same, 18-2. They have faced each other six times with Hewitt holding a 5-1 advantage.

In the first set, Rod**** make some errors in the tiebreaker and allowed Hewitt to take it 7-2. Both have an excellent "Points won on first-serve" percentage of over 90%, indicating a very high-level competition.

In the second, Hewitt broke Rod**** early to lead 2-1 but Rod**** broke right back to level 2-2. In the tiebreaker, Rod**** focussed, avoided the mistakes he made in the first set and won 7-3 with some good serves. In the rubber, Hewitt struck back in the tiebreaker 7-4 to clinch a finals berth. Rod**** had 25 aces while Hewitt had a 80% and 63% ratio of points won on first and second serves respectively.
