2005 ATP Masters Nasdaq-100 Finals - Federer in astounding comeback from 2 sets down

Roger Federer stamped his authority as the best player in the world currently when he won his 18th consecutive finals. He had earlier ousted one of the best players ever, Andre Agassi, easily in the semi-finals 6-3, 6-4 and in theory was expected to take his sixth Master Series title with ease. Yet, it wasn't easy this time, facing one of the rising youngsters Rafael Nadal of Spain who had beaten Federer last year in the third round at Key Biscayne. In marathon match of 3hrs 43mins, Federer was staring at defeat, two sets down and 3-5 down in the third-set tiebreaker before clawing back to prevail 2-6, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 6-1.

The 18-year Spaniard gave Federer a fright when he broke Federer right from the get-go and raced to a 6-2 first set win, retrieving nearly impossible shots coming from Federer's racquet and sending them back down the lines in furious speeds. In the second, he broke Federer again but the experienced Swiss upped his game to break back. Nadal then won the tiebreaker to force Federer against the wall.

The third set went again to a tiebreaker and Federer unleashed some incredible shots to save himself at 3-5 down. One shot was very risky and just on the line, and had it went out, easily could have given Nadal several championship points instead of levelling it 5-5. With the risk-taking, Federer returned to his finest and played tenaciously to clinch the set.

The next two sets saw Nadal's fitness slipping making numerous errors as Federer sent him all over the court with his lopping backhand topspins. Federer easily won the final set and raised his arms in delight at winning the hard-fought match. He has now won 22 consecutive matches and declared this comeback victory a big moment in his career.
