2005 ATP Rome Masters - Rafael Nadal outlasted Coria in 5 sets for 3rd consecutive tournament win

Spanish teenager Rafael Nadal struggled to win the finals of the ATP Rome Masters, defeating Guillermo Coria, 2004 French Open finalist, in five sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6). Despite playing in Rome for the first time, Nadal won his third tournament in a row, having already taken two titles in Monte Carlo and Barcelona last month. Nadal has accumulated 17 consecutive wins and won 2 Masters tournaments in a row. He can be termed the "King of clay", now undefeated in 6 clay court finals, and with an impressive 31-2 clay court win-loss record this season.

Coria wasted a 3-0 lead in the final set when Nadal fought back with grit, in a closely contested marathon match that went the full distance (final set tiebreaker). The 5hr 14 mins match was very physically demanding and was punctuated with heavy grunts as the two men tried to overpower each other on the slow clay court. Coria also could have tied at 5-5 but went 4-6 down in the tiebreaker when he blasted an easy forehand at the net that just missed the line. He later saved 2 championships points to level at 6-6 but Nadal clinched the next two points to repeat his victory against Coria in Monte Carlo. The two finalists were evenly matched in this gruelling battle, breaking each other 9 times; even the total points won were very close, with just two points difference (188-190).

Nadal had a tough match in the semi-finals, prevailing over fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Coria won in the semi-finals against former French Open winner Andre Agassi 7-5, 7-6. Nadal moved up to No. 5 in the ATP World Rankings after this victory while Coria also broke into the Top 10 with his excellent performances recently.
