Tennis: 2006 Wimbledon Results and Latest Updates
Early Rounds
Men's Singles
The third round of 2006 Wimbledon tournament witnessed a massacre of top seeds with four of the top eight seeds eliminated. 3rd seed Andy Rod**** (USA), last year's finalist, lost to unseeded Andy Murray (GBR) 6-7,4-6,4-6. In other third-round matches, 4th seed David Nalbandian (ARG) and 5th seed Ivan Ljubicic (CRO) also crashed out; Nalbandian lost to 28th seed Fernando Verdasco (ESP) 6-7,6-7,2-6 whilst Ljubicic lost in five sets to 27th seed Dmitry Tursunov (RUS) 7-5,6-4,1-6,6-7,2-6. 8th seed James Blake (USA) also lost 4-6,6-3,6-4,1-6,0-6 to Max Mirnyi (BLR).
Hot favourite Roger Federer (SUI) cruised into the quarter-finals with a straight-set 6-3,6-3,6-4 fourth round victory against 13th seed Tomas Berdych (CZE). Rafael Nadal (ESP) did surprisingly well in his matches on grass to make it through to the quarters, after a miserable performance last year; he dismissed Irakli Labadze (GEO) 6-3,7-6,6-3 in his fourth round match. 6th seed Lleyton Hewitt (AUS), last year's semi-finalist, and 7th seed Mario Ancic (CRO), who fell in the fourth round last year, also survived.
Women's Singles
All the top four seeds made the quarter-finals. 27th seed Li Na (CHN) stunned 5th-seeded French Open finalist Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) 3-6,6-2,6-3 in the third round. 6th seeded defending champion Venus Williams (USA) was also upset by 26th seed Jelena Jankovic (SCG) 6-7,6-4,4-6 in the third round. 8th seed Patty Schnyder (SUI) lost even earlier, 6-4,1-6,4-6 to unseeded Severine Bremond (FRA) in the second round.

Quarter-finals
Men's Singles
Defending champion Roger Federer (SUI)[1] played his best tennis in an intense match (6-4,6-4,6-4) against another good grasscourt player Mario Ancic (CRO)[7].
French Open champion Rafael Nadal (ESP)[2] showed he's good on grasscourts too in his triumphant 6-3,6-4,6-4 quarter-final match against Jarkko Nieminen (FIN)[22].
Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis (CYP)[18] stunned 2002 Wimbledon winner Lleyton Hewitt (AUS)[6] 6-1,5-7,7-6,6-2 in another quarter-final match. Unseeded Jonas Bjorkman (SWE) scraped through to the semi-finals by defeating 14th seed Radek Stepanek (CZE) 7-6,4-6,6-7,7-6,6-4.
Women's Singles
All the top four seeds moved into the semi-finals, with only one of them dropped a set. Australian Open champion and World No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo (FRA) survived a three-setter against 9th seed Anastasia Myskina (RUS) 6-1,3-6,6-3. 2nd-seeded US Open champion Kim Clijsters (BEL) won 6-4,7-5 against dark horse Li Na (CHN), who had ousted two top seeds earlier. Like French Open men's champion Rafael Nadal, 3rd-seeded French Open women's champion Justine Henin-Hardenne (BEL) was also surprisingly at ease on grass with a 6-4,6-4 quarter-final victory against Severine Bremond (FRA). 4th-seeded 2004 Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova (RUS) was relentless on her favourite surface, winning 6-1,6-4 against 7th seed Elena Dementieva (RUS).

Re: Tennis: 2006 Wimbledon Results and Latest Updates
I think it was a great acievement for Li Na to reach last 8 in grand slam. After so many compliments on her talents, she finally materialized into 2 wins over 5th and 10th seeds and a close defeat by Kim Clijster. I thought it is the result of increasing exposure to the international tennis scene. Li played Kuznetsova a few times and was defeated. If she didn't have these experiences against her, she might not be able to beat her. Pro tennis is all about exposure and experience.

Re: Tennis: 2006 Wimbledon Results and Latest Updates
Li Na has been playing on the WTA tour for a long time, in fact I thought she'll start to fade out with the emergence of younger players like Peng Shuai etc last year. The Chinese female single players still lack powerful serves and killer winners to really challenge the elite but at least they're quite close to top-rung players now. Like several other sports, Chinese male tennis players are still lagging far behind.
Yan Zi, Zheng Jie also reached the semi-finals in the women's doubles. They've played very well in all three Grand Slam tournaments this year -- winners of Australian Open, semi-finalists of French Open and now at least the semi-finalists of Wimbledon.
Semi-finals
Men's Singles
2006 Wimbledon final will be a repeat of the French Open final. Top seed Roger Federer (SUI) crushed veteran Jonas Bjorkman 6-2,6-0,6-2 for a shot at winning his fourth consecutive Wimbledon title and also a chance to avenge his French Open defeat at the hands of Nadal. Rafael Nadal (ESP) continued to surprise by reaching his first Wimbledon final. He defeated Bagdatis 6-1,7-5,6-3 in the other semi-final. Nadal's powerful groundstrokes were less suited for grass but he varied his shots a lot and was patient enough to set up several rallies before unleashing a winner.
Women's Singles
Unlike the men's event, 2006 Wimbledon final will instead be a repeat of the Australian Open final -- Aust Open champion Amelie Mauresmo (FRA) to face French Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne (BEL). However there's one glaring similarity -- both the male and female French Open champions will be vying for their first Wimbledon title against the two World No. 1s whose games are better suited on grasscourts.
Amelie Mauresmo had to fight off a determined Maria Sharapova (RUS) 6-3,3-6,6-2 in the semi-final. Sharapova showed flashes of brilliance in the match but just wasn't consistent enough; she tended to spray her shots wide, making many unforced errors. Sharapova was down 0-4 (down two serves) in the third set due to her errors but saved a break point in the fifth game to pull back 1-4. She then broke Mauresmo's serve with some awesome shots to set the score at 2-4. The seventh game was probably the best game of the set as it was critical to both players -- either Mauresmo will lead 5-2 for a comfortable lead or Sharapova can salvage the situation from two serves down for a 3-4. Both players fought hard for each point, but Mauresmo was able to hold her serve with two aces and some nice volleys despite some incredible returns from Sharapova. At 2-5 down, Sharapova struggled to hold serve but again, unnecessary errors lost her the game, set and match.
Justine Henin-Hardenne played rather well in the other semi-final to defeat US Open champion Kim Clijsters (BEL) 6-4,7-6. Henin-Hardenne played the big points better and unleashed several brilliant shots at critical points of the match. Clijsters upped the pace in the second set and even broke Henin-Hardenne's serve at 5-5 to serve for the set. However Henin-Hardenne apparently wasn't willing to play another set and she piled on the pressure to break back. In the tiebreaker, Henin-Hardenne again nailed her finishing touches and overcame Clijsters 7-4 to reach her third consecutive Grand Slam final. Technically, Henin-Hardenne hasn't lost in Grand Slam matches in 2006 because she pulled out from the Australian Open final before the match completed.

Women's Singles Final
Amelie Mauresmo (FRA) triumphed 2-6,6-3,6-4 against Justine Henin-Hardenne (BEL) to win her first Wimbledon title and her second Grand Slam tournament in 2006. Henin-Hardenne started the match in devastating form and took the first set comfortably. Mauresmo and Henin-Hardenne exchanged service breaks before Mauresmo captured the second set. Mauresmo's serves, though inconsistent, were effective at crucial moments for her to survive; Henin-Hardenne played the rallies better. In the third set, Mauresmo broke serve early in the set and held on to win the match.

Re: Tennis: 2006 Wimbledon Results and Latest Updates
Men's Singles Final
Roger Federer (SUI) retained his Wimbledon crown with a 6-0,7-6,6-7,6-3 victory against rival Rafael Nadal (ESP). He also became the third man to win fourth consecutive Wimbledon titles, after Bjorn Borg (SWE) and Sampras (USA). Despite a poor win-loss record against Nadal, Federer played an excellent game; Nadal had his chances when he was leading with a service break in the second set. Nadal's groundstrokes were surprisingly effective on grass too and will likely pose a more formidable threat in future Wimbledon tournaments.
In the women's doubles final, Zheng Jie-Yan Zi (CHN) won their first Wimbledon title and their second Grand Slam tournament of 2006.
