Nasdaq-100 Open (Miami)
Men's Singles
World No. 1 Roger Federer (SUI) continued his mastery of the tennis game with another ATP Masters Series tournament win. His opponent Ivan Ljubicic (CRO)[6] gave him strong resistance though, stretching Federer to a tiebreaker in each of the three sets played. Federer turned on the magic for the big points in all three tiebreakers again and handed Ljubicic a 7-6,7-6,7-6 defeat. Federer has now won ninth consecutive Master Series finals and his fourth title of the season.
Federer crushed David Ferrer (ESP)[11] 6-1,6-4 in the semis whilst Ljubicic upset 3rd seed David Nalbandian (ARG)[3] 6-1,6-2.
Women's Singles
Former US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS)[12] defeated World No. 4 Maria Sharapova (RUS)[4] 6-4,6-3 to win her first title in over a year. This victory also catapulted her back into the Top 10 of the WTA World Rankings, at No. 10 spot.
Kuznetsova played very well this past week, scalping the current World No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo (FRA)[1] 6-1,6-4 in the semis and former World No. 1 Martina Hingis in an earlier round. Sharapova ousted Tatiana Golovin (FRA)[22] 6-3,6-7,6-3 in the other semi-final. US Open champion Kim Clijsters (BEL)[2] lost 5-7,6-3,5-7 in the 2nd round to Jill Craybas (USA). 2006 ATP Masters Series Results: Monte-Carlo, Roma, Hamburg
Monte Carlo Masters Series
Men's Singles
In a match between arguably the best two players in the world right now, French Open champion Rafael Nadal (ESP) downed World No. 1 Roger Federer (SUI) 6-2,6-7,6-3,7-6. Nadal showed Federer a taste of what he can expect at their upcoming French Open matchup where Federer is bidding for his first French Open title and a Grand Slam.
Nadal easily captured the first set 6-2; he used his powerful ground shots to force errors from Federer or pin Federer to the baseline before executing some deft net shots or solid volleys to win his points. Federer countered in the next set, regaining his usual game of great serves, net play and pinpoint accurate shots down the line. It went to a tiebreaker and Federer won the set 7-6 with an ace. Federer started the third set with a service break but squandered his lead when Nadal broke back. At 4-3 (Federer's serve), Nadal made some great passing shots to neutralise Federer's increasingly aggresive game and break Federer's service. Nadal then serve out the third set 6-3 with a heavy forehand winner at his second set point.
In the fourth set, Federer began to lose some steam and trailed 0-3. He later picked up his game to break back twice to force a tiebreaker. At 5-5 in the tiebreaker, Nadal unleashed a heavy angled shot to open up the court and pounded a forehand winner down to set up match point. Nadal then ended the match with another heavy forehand shot to win the ATP Masters Series Monte Carlo title for the second consecutive year.
In the semi-finals, Federer eliminated 12th seed Fernando Gonzalez (CHI) 6-2,6-4 whilst Nadal ousted 7th seed Gaston Gaudio (ARG) 5-7,6-1,6-1. 3rd seed David Nalbandian (ARG) lost to 15th seed Tommy Robredo (ESP) 7-5,1-6,5-7 in the third round and 4th seed Ivan Ljubicic (CRO) lost to Gonzalez 5-7,1-6 in the quarter-finals.

2006 ATP Masters Series Results: Roma, Hamburg, Rogers Masters (Toronto)
ATP Masters Series Roma (Campionati Internazionali D'Italia)
In a marathon match which would be good enough as the men's final for the upcoming French Open, clay-court ruler Rafael Nadal (ESP) struggled to a five setter victory (6-7,7-6,6-4,2-6,7-6)against World No. 1 Roger Federer (SUI). Nadal had defeated Federer on clay many times in the past but Federer was also getting better on clay with each match. Federer will also be aiming for the French Open title, the only missing title to complete his Grand Slam having won Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open in a row; he appeared to have train better for the clay courts and might pose a real threat to Nadal at the French Open.
In yesterday's final, Nadal came back from a tiebreaker defeat in the first set to claim a tiebreaker win for himself in the second set and outpowered Federer in the third. Federer raised his game in the fourth set and raced to a 6-2 win using more aggressive serves and net shots. In the final set, Federer led with a service break but Nadal broke back later to level the score, pushing the match into a deciding tiebreaker. At match point, both players played some good rallies but Federer misjudged a shot, thinking it was going out; on realising it wasn't, Federer could only hit a weak return which Nadal immediately capitalised on for a powerful winner.
In the semi-finals, Nadal crushed Gael Monfils (FRA) 6-2,6-2 whilst Federer survived in another deciding tiebreaker against 4th seed David Nalbandian (ARG) 6-3,3-6,7-6.
