Men's Team Final

China defeated South Korea 3-0 in the 2005 Asian Table Tennis Championships to take the men's team title. The first singles match-up is a repeat of the 2004 Athens Olympic final - Wang Hao (CHN) vs Ryu Seung-min (KOR). Wang came back from two sets down (11-13,11-13) to win the next three sets (11-3,11-5,11-8) and reverse his Athens defeat against Olympic champion Ryu.

The reigning World Champion Wang Liqin (CHN) then overpowered Oh Sang-eun (KOR), who has performed very well recently in the ITTF circuit, 3-1 in the second singles match to give China a 2-0 lead.

In the third singles, Chen Qi (CHN) ousted
Lee Jung-woo (KOR) 6-11,11-6,11-7,13-11 to clinch the title for China. Both young players are left-handed, have showed great promise and are expected to face off in many more tournaments leading up to the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Women's Team Final

Chinese Hong Kong surprised the South Korean women 3-0 to regain the women's team title they last won back in 1992 against North Korea. South Korea had created the shock of the tournament when they bundled out hot favourites China 3-2 in the semi-finals.

Chinese Hong Kong fielded Osaka World Championships finalist Lin Ling (HKG) against Olympic bronze medalist Kim Kyung-ah (KOR) in the first singles match. After five gruelling sets, Lin Ling finally wore down defender Kim 11-9,6-11,11-6,9-11,11-8 to put them in a 1-0 lead.

In the second singles, former World University Games champion Tie Yana (HKG) put down another defender Kim Bok-rae (KOR) 11-3,2-11,11-6,11-2 for an overall 2-0 lead. The final match featured two penholders Lau Sui Fei(HKG) and Moon Hyun-jung (KOR) where Lau demolished Moon easily in three straight sets.

The 17th Asian Championships ended today at Jeju, Korea. China won four titles whilst Chinese Hong Kong grabbed the other three.

Men's Singles

Top seeded World Champion Wang Liqin (CHN) captured the Asian Championships men's singles title by beating Li Ching (HKG) 12-10,7-11,11-9,11-3,11-4. Wang Liqin had earlier won the mixed doubles title and the men's team title while Li Ching won the men's doubles title. Wang Liqin crushed Chuang Chih Yuan (TPE) 4-0 in the quarter-finals, and subdued Hao Shuai (CHN) 4-2 in the semis; Hao Shuai (CHN) had pulled off an upset when he defeated World Championships bronze medalist Oh Sang-eun (KOR) 4-2 in the quarters. Li Ching surprised Olympic champion Ryu Seung-min (KOR) 4-1 in the quarters and Choi Hyun-jin (KOR) in the semis.

Women's Singles

Former World Championships finalist Lin Ling (HKG) defeated Lau Sui Fei (HKG) 4-0 in the women's singles final for her first major title this year, having this title back in 2000 when she was still playing for China. Lin Ling reached the final by defeating Li Jiawei (SIN) 4-2 while Lau Sui Fei took down top seeded defending champion Niu Jianfeng (CHN) 4-2 in the semis. This is the first time in a long while that no player from China has reached the women's singles final.
