Shanghai 2005 World Table Tennis Championships

Mixed Doubles : All the Chinese pairs are through to Top 16. Yan Sen and Guo Yan had the toughest match, against the top North Korean pair. The North Koreans played very well in the first two sets, racing to 2-0 against the seeded Chinese pair but the determined Yan-Guo pairing fought back strongly to win the match 4-3.

Men's Singles : Major shock here when both reigning Olympics Champion Ryu Seung-min of South Korea and World Champion Werner Schlager were ousted in the second round. They also lost by the same margin 3-4 to their respective opponents Danny Hiester of Netherlands and He Zhiwen of Spain. Other upsets included scalps of former World Champion Jean-Michel Saive of Belgium, top Taiwan players Zhuang Zhiyuan and Jiang Penglong.

Men's Singles : Third and fourth-seeded Wang Hao and Vladimir Samsonov fell to Dane Michael Maze and South Korean Oh Sang-Eun respectively, failing to reach the quarter-finals.

Women's Singles : Top seed Zhang Yining repeated her 4-0 Olympic finals victory over Kim Hyang-mi of North Korea to advance into the quarter-finals. She then saw off Viktoria Pavlovich of Belarus in another 4-0 to reach the semi-finals. Zhang Yining will face Lin Ling of Hong Kong who defeated Tamara Boros and Gao Jun for a semis berth. Veteran Gao Jun of USA fought off a tough challenge from newcomer Cao Zhen of China but failed to advance further, losing to Lin Ling.

Men's Doubles : German pair Timo Boll-Christian Suss broke the stranglehold of the Chinese pairs when they upset Athens Olympic champions Ma Lin-Chen Qi in the semis. They'll face another top Chinese pair Kong Lihui-Wang Hao in the finals.

Men's Singles : Liu Guozheng of China conquered Timo Boll of Germany in a tight battle that went to 7 sets and 15-13 in the rubber. Liu Guozheng was best known for his tenacity, especially in the exciting semi-finals match in the World Table Tennis Team Championships against South Korea's Kim Taek Soo.

Women's Singles : It'll be an all-Chinese finals after Zhang Yining and Guo Yan dismissed their opponents 4-1 in the semi-finals. Zhang Yining overcame a first set deficit to beat Lin Ling of Hong Kong who was a previous World Championships finalist. Guo Yan surprised young Guo Yue who was tipped to be the next table tennis star from China.

Mixed Doubles : Wang Liqin-Guo Yue took the first title of this Championships with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Liu Guozheng-Bai Yang. Liu Guozheng and Bai Yang were the silver medalists at the previous World Championships and were expected to take the gold medal this time. However, Liu Guozheng appeared worn out after his match with Timo Boll in the men's singles.

Men's Singles : Top seed Wang Liqin of China will face South Korean Oh Sang-eun in the semis after seeing off compatriot Chen Qi 4-2. The other semis matchup is between second seed Ma Lin of China and Mickaël Maze of Denmark. Mickaël Maze had an awesome comeback in his quarter-finals match against the Chinese rookie Hao Shuai. He trailed by three sets and was 7-10 down in the fourth but clawed back to take the next five points and the set. With mounting confidence, Maze rolled on in the next three sets to book his place in the semi-finals.

Women's Singles : Latest news - Zhang Yining defeated Guo Yan 4-2 to win her first World Championships title. Guo Yan saved three match points to level the score in the sixth game after trailing 7-10. She even went 11-10 up but Zhang Yining regrouped to clinch the next three points and the match.

Men's Doubles : Chinese pair Kong Linghui-Wang Hao took the men's doubles title with a 4-1 victory over Germans Timo Boll-Christian Suss. Nevertheless, the German pair has done very well in this meet, scalping both the Olympics gold and silver medalists on their way to the finals. They will certainly be a major force in future.

China has won the World Championships men's doubles event six times in a row, and this is Kong Linghui's third doubles world title. The other two times were with Liu Guoliang at the 44th and 45th World Championships. Kong Linghui's achievements in the singles were even more impressive; he was also a Table tennis Grand Slam winner (Olympics, World Championships, World Cup and World Grand Prix).

Men's Singles : Latest - Top seed Wang Liqin (CHN) ousted Oh Sang-eun (KOR) 4-1 to reach the finals. Shanghai native Wang Liqin mentioned in his post-match interview that he prepared very well for this competition and he hoped the Shanghai home crowd will be behind him in the finals as well. Despite losing, veteran Oh Sang-eun provided the spark in his run to the semis, amidst the relatively poor showing of fellow South Koreans. Second seed Ma Lin (CHN) is also through to the finals with an easy 4-0 win over Mickaël Maze (DEN). The experienced Ma Lin handled Maze's high lobs effectively although Maze's serves gave him some problems in the fourth set. Maze was visibly upset with his loss but he can take heart that he's the youngest among the semi-finalists and has a bright future ahead.

Maze's post-match interview where he predicts the winner of tomorrow's finals.

Women's Doubles : Olympics gold medalists Zhang Yining-Wang Nan (CHN) staved off the challenge from Tie Yana-Zhang Rui (HKG) to win 4-2 in the semi-finals. The other finalist is also a Chinese pair, Niu Jianfeng-Guo Yue, who pounded compatriots Bai Yang-Guo Yan 4-0.

Men's Singles : World number one Wang Liqin regained his title which he won in 2001. He was 1-2 down in sets and 7-9 in the third against Ma Lin but pulled back for a 4-2 victory. Both men played brilliant table tennis in the finals but in the end, there could only be one winner -- Wang Liqin played the big points better.

Women's Doubles : Reigning Olympics and World Champion Wang Nan-Zhang Yining demolished team-mates Niu Jianfeng-Guo Yue 4-1 to take the title for the second time. Wang Nan has won the women's doubles world title for the fourth consecutive time and has now tied legendary Deng Yaping in terms of number of major world titles won (18 Olympics gold, Worlds and World Cup titles).
