2006 Kuwait Open: Ma Lin (CHN) reigns; giantkiller Jiang Huajun (HKG) stuns top 3 Chinese women

Triple World Cup champion Ma Lin (CHN) stepped into the groove instantly in the men's singles final, reeling three sets in a row before his opponent Chen Qi (CHN), who's his doubles partner, found his rhythm to pull back two sets. Ma Lin tightened his game in the sixth set to take the match 4-2. Ma Lin ousted Li Ching (HKG) in the semi-finals whilst Chen Qi took out Chen Weixing (AUT) who surprised World Champion Wang Liqin (CHN) in the previous round.

The story of this meet was however the giantkilling feats of unseeded Jiang Huajun (HKG), taking down three top Chinese players on her way to the women's singles crown. She first stunned World No. 1 Zhang Yining (CHN), the reigning Olympic, World Cup and World Champion, 4-2 in the round of 16; Zhang seldom lost in her matches lately, especially to lowly-ranked players and it was thought Jiang simply took advantage of an unusual bad day for the top seed. She then crushed Tan Monfardini Wenling (ITA) 4-0 to reach the semis where she eliminated another top Chinese player Guo Yan (CHN), the World Cup and World Championship finalist, in seven sets; 2nd seed Guo Yue (CHN), who recently won the Slovenia and Croatia Open titles, swept aside Sayaka Hirano (JPN) 4-1 in the other semi-final. In the final, Jiang came on strongly with her pinpoint accurate handling of the ball and swift shots to take the first two sets; Guo Yue hung in there and narrowly won the next two sets to draw level; Jiang then piled on the pressure against the young Chinese player and won the match 4-2. Jiang had defeated the top three players in the world in her first international tournament victory. A check on her history revealed she's actually a member of China's youth team groomed for the future; she was part of the team that won Shandong the silver medal at the China Games and she also helped her club "Shandong Lu Neng" capture the 2005 China Table-tennis League women's team title.

Olympic doubles champions Ma Lin-Chen Qi (CHN) and Wang Nan-Zhang Yining (CHN) easily won the men's and women's doubles titles; Ma-Chen defeated Ko Lai Chak-Li Ching (HKG) 4-0 in a repeat of Athens Olympic final whilst Wang-Zhang overcame Lau Sui Fei- Lin Ling (HKG) 4-0.
