Liu Xiang regained world leading time this year from Allen Johnson with 13.12 in Osaka

In the men's 110m hurdles finals at the IAAF Grand Prix Osaka leg, Olympics gold medalist Liu Xiang easily won in a world-leading time of 13.12 seconds. The anticipated clash between Liu Xiang and his idol, Allen Johnson did not materialize because Johnson pulled out before the meet commenced. Allen Johnson had clocked a 13.18 in an earlier meet this season to beat Liu Xiang's 13.23 set in the Zhongshan leg of the 2005 Chinese Track and Field Grand Prix.

When asked whether he was satisfied with his results and whether he wanted to set a world record today, Liu Xiang replied, "Rather satisfied. There are quite a few athletics meets in 2005, each one serves its purpose in my training plans. My original intention was to run around 13.20 seconds, and it turned out to be better than expected. "

"I think of breaking the world record everyday, but to do it not only depends on my capabilities but also on many other external factors such as the weather, track, temperature etc. I'm now only 22 years old, and the prime age for athletes is around 26. It requires a detailed plan and schedule to place a world-record race into execution. I'm currently not in top shape because I've not gone into full-fledged training after the Olympics, to prepare for the more important meets later. I hope to prolong my athletics career with good planning and do my part to help the development of sprint events in China and Asia. "

Liu Xiang explained why he appeared to slow down a little in the last 10m of the race today and whether he could have run within 13 seconds had he not slowed down, "I wasn't expecting to break any record or run within 13 seconds today. My target for this race was to run about 13.20 seconds. Hurdling is a very technical event -- you've got to be in good control of your body movements in the race; I'm still very pleased with my time."
