World Cup in Athletics 2006 in Greece
2-day competition gives a measure of the continential power in athletics.
In the first day comepetition, Asian team notched 2 wins: Olympic champion and Asian record holder Koji Murofushi in men's hammer (82.01m) and world record holder in 3000m steeplechase, Saif Saaeed Shaheen in men's 5000m (13:35.30). Murofushi beat world champion, European representative, Ivan Tikhon (80.00m)in the competition and both of them were only 80-meter performer last night. The pace of 5000m was slow. without Berkele from Ethiopia, Shaheen is a clear favourite in the competition and easily won the race. He will be racing his pet event, 3000m steeplechase this evening. Both of them won 9 points for Asian team.
Other notable results for Asian men's team yesterday were 2 third positions in men's long jump and men's 4x100m relay. Asian record holder (8.48m), Al Khuwalidi Mohamed Salman jumped 8.11m in the 1st round to place third to win 7 points for Asian team. The winner was world no one this year, American representaive, Irving Saladino (8.26m). Another 7 points were from surprising 3rd place for Japanese 4x100m team (38.51s) just 0.06s behind silver medalist, European team. US team won the relay in 37.59s, championship record.
PB was set by Yang Yaozu of China in men's 100m when he ran 10.21s (6th), just 0.04s short of national record. His previous best was 10.25s. The sprint winner is 200m specialist, Tyson Gay in 9.88s, championship record.

No win for Asian women. The best results were 2 third positions: Song Aimin in Discus (61.47m) and Gao Shuying in pole vault (4.50m). Song performed below the par (her pb: 65.33m in 2004) but still managed to grab the third position. Franka Dietzsch 66.07m of Germany won 9 points for European team. Yelena Isinbeya started her competition (at 4.60m) when there was only 1 jumper left in the competition. She only needed 1 successful jump at 4.60m to win 9 points for russian team. Gao Shuying needed only 1 jump for 4.15, 4.30 and 4.45m. She took the last attempt to conquer 4.50m. She failed at new Asian record, 4.55m.
Other notable results: 5th placer in triple jump, Anastasiya Juravleva who jumped 14.54m, just 1 cm short of her pb. The winner is world champion of both long jump and triple jump, Tatyana Lebedeva (15.13m, championship record). The emergence of Juravleva will spice up the long-lasting dominance of Chinese in Asian women triple jump. Xie Limei just set a pb of 14.54m in August will definietly have a tough competition against Juravleva in Asian Games.
Another 5th placer is Kayoko Fukushi who ran 8:44.58 to finish behind the winner, Ethiopian, Tirunesh Dibaba (8:33.78, Championship record). Fukushi's time is just 0.18s short of pb. She is definitely a favourite in both women's 5000m and 10000m in Asian Games when double Asian Games champion, Sun Yingjie of China who has been banned for 2 years after tested positive in drug test in National games in October, 2005. Olympic champion in 10000m, Xing Huina of China is just back to formal training after her coach selection was finalized and she just recoverd from a knee injuries. Therefore, Xing is going to be out of the competition in Doha.
Absent from most of the season, world championship finalist, Huang Xiaoxiao ran a seasonal best (55.06s, 6th) in 400m hurdle. Just newly divorced, world record holder (52.34s) Yuliya Nosova (former Yuliya Pechonkina) of Russia won the race in 53.88s. Huang only raced not more than 5 times this year and her previous best this year is 56.7s. The time she set in World Cup should boost her confidence in Asian Games.

A big improvement for Asian men's team. In Day 2 competition, Asian male athletes won 2 events and placed well in most of the competition. Overall, Asian men's team ranked 4th behind Europe, US and Africa.
2 wins were from men's 800m and 3000m steeplechase. Asian record holder, Youssef Saad Kamel of Bahrain ran 1:44.98 to win 800m race while Saudi Arabian Saif Saaeed Shaheen doubled up to win his 2nd event, 3000m steeplechase in 8:19.09.
Liu Xiang, on the other hand, lost to evergreen Allen Johnson. The race was high quality that Johnson ran 12.96s against Liu's 13.03s. Liu who broke WR in 12.88s this year and was backed up with 12.93s last week started the race the slowest among the top 3 finishers and cannot regain the lost the ground in the last few metres. His pre-race biggest opponent, Dayron Robles of Cuba finished 3rd om 13.06s.
Japanese Daichi Sawano finished 2nd in 5.70m behind Oceania represetative, Steve Hooker (5.80m). A surprsing 2nd place winner was Asian record holder, Ehasan Hadahi of Iran. He threw 62.60m to finish 2nd behind world champion, Virgilijus Alekna (67.19m)
Another Asian record holder and 2003 world bronze medalist, Shingo Suetsugu fend off the chanllege of double European champion, Francis Obikwelu of Portugal to finish 3rd in 200m (20.30s). He was just 0.06s faster than Obikwelu. The winner was Spearmon Wallace of US in a championship record, 19.87s.
Chinese men also contributed 2 fourth positions for Asian team. Li Yanxi leapt a 16.87m to finish 4th behind the winner, Davis Walter of US (17.54m). His seasonal best was 17.12m. Chen Qi, Chinese best javelin thrower after Li Rongxiang, threw 79.20m behind the European representative, Andreas Thorkildsen (NOR) who was superior in the competition. His best this time was 87.17m

No improvemrnt for Asian women from last version of World Cup. Asian women's team placed 7th overall.
Maryam Yusuf Jamal who ran world 2nd fastest this year, defeated 2003 and 2005 world champion, Taytana Tomashova of Russia in a time 4:00.84 (CR) to notch the only win for Asian women's team.
2 third positions were won by Marina Aitova of Kazahstan (1.94m) in high jump and Kayoko Fukushi of Japan (15:06.69) in 5000m. Aitova lost to Olympic Champion, Yelena Slesarenko of Russia and European champion, Tia Hellebaut of Belgium who both leapt 1.97m. Ethiopian Meseret Defar showed her superemcy in 5000m when she ran alone most of time in the race and won in 14:39.11 more than 25 seconds faster than than 2nd placer, Liliya Shobukhova of Russia.
Asian record holder, Chinese Zhang Wenxiu threw a moderate 71.19 to finish 4th in hammer. 2000 Olympic champion, Kamila Skolimowska of Poland defeated WR holder, Tatyana Lysenko of Russia to win the hammer competition.
PB was set by Li Ling of China who threw 19.06m (5th) in women's shot put, the 1st over-19m throw for her. The winner was Oceania representaive, world silver medalist, Valerie Vili of New Zealand who won the competition in 19.87m
