Japan: Asami Tanno timed 52.39 seconds to win the women's 400m event for Fukushima University at an inter-school meet. Yuzo Kanemaru took the men's 400m title in 46.09 seconds, more than half a second off his personal best time of 45.41 seconds. Kanemura complained he caught a cold which affected his fitness, especially for the second half of the race. Satoshi Kitamura claimed the men's 10000m title with a time of 28 min 44.30 sec.

Asian Track and Field News Updates ( including articles and interviews )

In Canada on Jun 11, Chinese atheletes competed another local meet, Victoria Classic and produced some fine results.

On men's side, Chinese swept top 3 positions in 200m with Cai Jian finishing 1st in 21.51s followed by Zhang Peimeng and Yin Hualong. Guangdong atheletes, Wang Youxin and Tan Biao, produced SBs in 400m to finish 1st (46.39s) and 3rd (46.53s), respectively, not far from their PBs. Tanf Baojun came 2nd in 1500m with SB (3:43.20) while Gu Ming finished 7th (3:44.83) and 800m specialist, Li Xiangyu came last (3:59.08, PB). 1500m NR holder, Dou Zhaobo ran a moderate time in 5k to finish 12th position (14:23.90). Chinese 2nd best 110m hurdler, Shi Dongpeng dashed a SB in 13.52s. In field event, veteran Li Rongxiang won the javelin in 78.68m, still showing his chance to win his 2nd Asian Games title.

On Women's side, most of the female atheletes were not in good form. 400m specilaist, Tang Xiaoyin set a SB in 200m (23.83s) to finish 4th. Liu Qing lost to Diane Cummins again to finish 4th (2:04.08) in 800m. Surprisingly, Huang Jing finished just behind Liu and set a PB (2:04.38) while World Championships finalist in 400m hurdle last year, Huang Xiaoxiao was in 8th position (2:07.74) which is a PB for her. Jin Yuan who trained in the US for a period of time came in 2nd in 5k (15:53.31),far off her PB set earlier in the season. He Liyuan and Zhang Rong, upcoming elites in 100m hurdle, ran moderate times to finish in 2nd (13.54s) and 3rd (13.57s)position, resepctively. The race was won by more well-known Angela Whyte (CAN) in 12.90s. AR holder in pole vault, Gao Shu ying tied with Niki Mcewen at 4.45m (SB) but pushed back to 2nd in the countback.

In Russian National Championships held in Tula, Kazah middle distance specilist, Mikhail Kolganov topped in the heat of men's 1500m and set a PB (3:44.58) on Jun 13. In the final, he only managed to finish 8th.

In Dalian Marathon held on Jun 18, He Lijun from Hebei provonce won the men's race in 2hr21min7s while Zhu Xiaolin from Liaoning topped the women's side in 2hr45min57s. Coming in third place was the World Bronze medalist in 10000m in 1997, Chiba Masako who set a time in 2hr46min55s.

Very detailed updates ! emoticon

The Chinese athletes (except for Liu Xiang and Zhou Chunxiu) are not looking very good for the 2008 Olympics, unless they improve drastically within the next two years. Perhaps, it's still early in the season.

Chinese Junior Track and Field championships in Luohe, Province of Henan

Chinese junior t&f championships was held in Luohe from Jun 28 to Jul 1.

In men's 100m, Guangdong sprinters Wen Yongyi and Liang Jiahong swept gold (10.47s) and silver (10.52s) under headwind of 2.2 m/s. Li Yong from Hubei province took bronze, 2/100th sec behind Liang. Wen already set a pb (10.30s) this year in Asian GP so he has a good chance to make to the final in the coming World Junior Champ 2 months later. In women's 100m, under headwind of 2.0 m/s, Wang Jing from Fujian province dashed a 11.67s to take the junior title which is considered a fine time for Chinese junior. Chen Jue (Jiangsu) and Tao Yujia (Jiangxi) took silver (11.76s) and bronze (11.90s), respectively. On the final day, Wang won the 200m race in 23.76s (wind -0.6m/s)over 400m champion, Li Xueji (24.14s). 100m silver medalist, Chen Jue clocked 24.28s for the bronze, far off her pb, 23.69s.

Back from Canada, Zhang Peimeng from Beijing set a season best of 21.26s to win the men's 200m. Sichuan's Yin Hualong was just 7/100 sec behind Zhang. Guangdong's Liu Xiongwei got bronze (21.44s).

In 400m, Beijing's Li Jinlong won the men's title in 47.35s, a pb for him. Li Xueji from Guangdong province took the women's title in a pb time, 53.22s. All top 6 runners clocked their pbs. Li Xueji has been improving from last year and her result is consistent at 53-54s. World Junior Champ might provide a chance to break 53s and make top 5 in the final. Furthermore, top 4 winners' times were close (53.22s by Li Xueji, 53.55 by Wen Xiuyun, 53.76s by Chen Cuiyu and 54.00 by Wang Jinping) which might make a good quartet for women's 4 x 400m relay team.

In the weak event 800m, Hubei's Zhang Xinping and Zhejiang's Xia Xiudong both crossed the line in 1:52.55, but Zhang was
the final winner while Inner Mongolia was 1/10 sec behind them to win bronze. On women side, Song Tingting from Liaoning province clocked 2:07.00 to win the race while 1500m champion, Li Yong was 0.88 sec behind Song. Top juniors, Yang Xiaocui (pb: 2:02.64, 2005), Huang Xiaofeng (pb: 2:03.07, 2005) and Huang Jing (pb: 2:04.38, 2006) did not race.

Zhang Guilin from Shandong province won men's 1500m final in 3:46.91 (pb), almost 1 and a half sec faster than the silver medalist, Yang Le from Inner Mongolia (3:48.35). the competition from second to fourth finisher was tight, not more than 1 second. 5 runners went under 3:50 mark. The results from women's side was not optimistic. The winning time was 4:19.14 by Heilongjiang's Li Yong. Shanghai's Lin Yuan who owns a pb of 4:12.79 only managed to finish in 3rd position (4:23.44).

In men's 5k, the results were also moderate. Dong Guojian from Qinghai province won his race 2 in 14:29.49 to top in all 3 races. Jiangsu's Lin Xiangqian has a pb of 13:46 from last year won the race 1 but his winning time was 14:38.54 which placed him 4th in the overall ranking. In women's 3k, all overall top 3 finishers were produced from race 1. Song Liwei from Shandong province won the race by almost 17 seconds in 9:13.69. Liaoning's Su Qian finished 2nd (9:30.58) while another Shandong athlete, Liu Lijuan came 3rd in a time of 9:31.70. Su, regained her lead in the longer distance (5k) on day 2 and won her race in 16:25.82. She already dipped under 16:00 this year in Zhengzhou GP with a time of 15:57.49.

10k race was only held for men. The winning time was somewhat slow that Yunnan's Huang Jinhong won the race in 30:26.57. Inner Mongolia's Zheng Guogun (30:43.30) and Qinghai's Dong Guojian (30:55.03)took the minor medals. The top junior, Ren Longyun (pb: 28:51.73) was not in the race.

In women's 3k steeplechase, Yunnan's Qiu Liping, having run 3 races in 2 days, won the race in 10:34.01, a pb for her. She also finished 4th in 3k (9:39.21, pb) and 2nd in 5k (16:29.57), respectively. In the race, She finished almost 11 sec over Zhang Jing from Army (10:45.14). On men's side, with a pb of 8:39.59, Jiangsu's Lin Xiangqian took the win easily in 8:50.27.

Women's 100m hurdle was featured by Hebei's Wan Jindan who ran a 13.86s to win the race under a strong headwind of 1.8 m/s. Wan's time was the only sub 14s mark in the race and already set a pb of 13.55s in Chongqing GP this year.

In 400m hurdle, Guangdong's Yu Zipei set a pb 50.88s to win the men's competition easily while top juniors, Guangdong's Chen Yumei overcame a strong challenge from Jiangsu's Wang Hui in women's side. Chen (57.61s) vs. Wang (57.99s).

Having produced an Olympic champion in this event, new talents are emerging in men's 110m hurdles. Hong Xiaofeng from Shanghai who is training under Liu Xiang's coach, won the race (100-cm hurdle) in 13.72s. Guangdongs' Li Haolun and Zhou Jialei got silver (13.85s) and bronze (13.91s).

Due to the windy condition, results from high jump were poor. Already set a pb of 2.20m in Zhaoqing GP in May, Gao Wenbo from Liaoning province only managed to jump a poor 2.12m to win the competition and this mark was already 4 cm longer than the 2nd and 3rd best jumpers of the day, Gao Yisha from Shandong province and Wang Hua from Beijing who tied at 2.08m. Already set a pb this year at 2.28m, Zhejiang's Huang Haiqiang did not compete. On Women's side, Shanghai's Zhaojing took the title at 1.81m, 3 cm shorter than her seasonal best. The other 2 juniors, Fujian's Zheng Xingyuan and Zhejiang's Gu Biwei chose to skip the meet. Zheng tied her own national junior record (1.92m) this year and Gu has a pb of 1.90m from national games last year.

Shandong's Zhou Minwei leapt a pb 16.34m, 3 cm longer than the previous best, to win men's triple jump. Hunan's Dong Bin also set a pb (16.22m) to finish behind Zhou.
Women's triple jump was won by Heilongjiang's promising star, Sha Li in 13.85m (pb) while she also placed 2nd in women's long jump at 6.25m behind national games silver medalist, Zhang Yuan from Guangdong province at a fine 6.49m just 1 cm short of her pb. On men's side, Chen Jun won the long jump at 7.73cm (pb) under a better condition (1.7 m/s tailwind) and Zhang Youshi was beaten by only 3cm to place 2nd. Asian junior record (8.17m in 2006) holder, Zhang Xiaoyi did not compete.

In men's shotput (6kg), Guo Yanxiang from Shandong province produced the longest throw of 20.09m which can place him 5th in the world junior list. Behind him was Wang Guangtu (Henan) placed 2nd at 19.03m. Wang had a pb of 19.42m from last year National High School Games. On women's side, no.2 in the world junior list, Li Li won the title at 17.36m well ahead the silver medalist, Liu Yingfan (16.67m) from Shanghai who is struggling to regain her 18-m form back in 2004. World youth champion, Jiang Limin only finished 7th. Another top junior, Gong Lijiao (pb: 17.41m, 2006), a 15-year-old, did not take part.

In men's discus throw (1.75kg), no athlete went further than 60m. The competition was won by Hu Tai from Shandong province at 59.11m. Women's competition was tight when top 3 was decided by 30 cm. Sichuan's Tan Jian (pb: 57.01m, 2005) won the event at 54.29m, followed by Wang Bin (54.13m) and Pan Saili (54.08m, pb: 58.52m, 2005).

On the other hand, national junior record was set in men's hammer (6kg) when Qi Daikai from Shan3xi province produced a massive throw of 75.07m in the competition, 5 and a half meters than the mark produced by the second best thrower, Heilongjiang's Dan Zhangcheng (69.64m). This mark placed Qi 5th in the current world junior list.

In women's hammer, only 1 thrower got over 60m-mark. Wang Zheng, from Shan3xi province won the competition at 60.46m, about 1 meter short of her pb. Other 2 top juniors, Hao Shuai and Liao Xiaoyan were not in the competition who have pbs of 65.72m and 65.53m, respectively.

Men's javelin throw was won by Li Yu in a pb distance, 75.03m which was about 3 and a half metres longer than Jiang Xingyu (71.47m). Wang Qingbo who owns a pb of 71.90m finished 3rd (69.66m).

Finally, in the combined event, Zhu Hengjun from army improved his pb to 7422 to win men's Decathlon (6kg shot, 1.75kg discus). Women's heptathlon was won by Song Lijuan. She accumulated 5404 points in 2- day competition, about 100 points short of her pb.

West Asian atheletes shone in Athina on July 3

One of the famous t&f events, Tsiklitiria created 8 world no. 1 marks in 2006. West Asian althletes performed well in middle distance running.

AR holder Youssef Saad Kamel from Bahrain placed 4th in the 1st sub-1:44 race of the year. His time was 1:43.75 just 0.33s behind Olympic champion, Russian Yuriy Borzakovskiy. 5th placer, Mohamed Mutlak Al-Azimi from Qatar set a NR in 1:44.13. WR holder, Saif Saeed Shaheen from Qatar set the 6th best in all time with 7:56.32 almost 9 secs faster than former world and Olympic champion, Reuben Kosgei from Kenya.
Having set NR earlier, Tareq Mubarak Taher from Bahrain finished 4th in 8:17.23. On women's side, having run sub-4 min in 1500m last year, Maryam Jamal from Bahrain set NR in 800m (1:59.04, 7th) in a race featuring 9 sub-2 min marks. The race was won by former 400m runner, Russian Olga Kotlyarova in 1:57.86 who finished disappointing 4th in Russian Champ earlier this month. Jamal had set the world leading mark in 1500m last year with 3:56.79. Winning a double 800/1500m in Asian Games is possible for her.

Wow, Bahrain athletes are really powerful these days. I didn't realise Jamal had run a 3:56 last year, that's even faster than Kelly Holmes's winning time of 3:57 at Athens Olympics. Just checked the 2005 Worlds results -- she did a 4:02 last year so she's quite consistent; she's definitely the favourite for at least two Asian Games gold medals, not sure what she's capable of in the 5K race or maybe 400m; for the 5k event, Xing Huina isn't looking that good and Sun Yingjie is down and out. Another Russian just ran 3:56.74, too bad Chinese runners are no longer anywhere near the standards set by Ma's Army...

Re: Asian Track and Field News Updates ( including articles and interviews )

Yes, Jamal did. She also ran a few more sub 4 min marks last year in addition to the world leading mark. If she enters this event in a fine form in Asian Games, she is undefeated in Asian Games.

Jamal is more a 1500m runner that she needs more speed to make waves in 800m. She might do better in 5k. There is no match for Chinese against her in 1500m. They even can't secure golds in these 2 events for last 2 Asian Games. It has been like 9 years no Chinese runners ran under 4 minutes after 1997 National Games and like 7 years no sub-2 min marks happened in Chinese runners until Liu Qing in National Games (1:59.74) last year. Liu is promising and she also created the best mark among Chinese in 9 years in 1500m (4:04). Fortunately, she has been performing consistently in 800m this year having run a couple of times around 2:00 in 800m and 4:07-08 during her training in US.

Results from Ma's army in 1500m were hard to come close with all 3:50 and 3:51. However, their international exposure was very limited and there was only one sub 4 minute mark created by runners from Ma's army in international competitions: Qu Yunxia in Barcelona Olympics was the only one when she won bronze in 3:57.08. Therefore, most of the the wonders from Ma's Army were created in National Games.

Women 1500m progress has been stagnant in these years except for the wonders created by Ma's Army. Even strong Russians feel difficult to chase Svetlana Kazanina's 23-year-old European record (3:52.74). Nevertheless, Russia is now building a greater force in 800 and 1500m (although they have been traditionally strong in these events). Last year, 5 Russians ran under 4 min which never happened in last 10 seasons.

I have no idea for Xing Huina. Her current training has not been well-planned like past years. According to the news reports, she has been training on her own and in US. Now, she is waiting for a new coach appointed by Chinese athletics association. I think it will do some serious damage to her training. we might be able to see the influences in Asian Games if her training is not back on the right track.

Men's Long Jump AR broken on Jul 2

In Sotteville, France, Saudi Khalid Habash Al-Suwaidi improved his AR to 8.48m (0.6 m/s) on Jul 2. The old record was 8.44m he set in 2005. This mark can rank him no. 2 in the world this year. In the competition, he beat his compatriot, Asian Champion, 30-year-old Ahmed Fayez Marzouk who this leapt a good 8.29m (wind-aided mark, 2.7 m/s).

In June, 2 Malaysian NRs were broken. Noraseela Mohd Khalid broke women's 400m hurdle NR in 56.02s in Regensburg, Germany on Jun 16 while Roslinda Samsu set women's pole vault NR at 4.30m in Spain on Jun 20. Both results can rank Asian top 5 this year. Samsu placed a close 4th position in Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne. These 2 athletes are training in Germany under the sponsorship by Malaysian Sports Association.

Men's 110m hurdle broken in Lausanne on Jul 11

After a warm-up run in Paris on July 8 with 13.19s (4th behind Trammel Terrence won in 13.06s), Liu Xiu of China finally broke the WR (12.91s) of men's 110m hurdle co-held by him (2000) and Colin Jackson (1993) with a time of 12.88s (+1.1 m/s). In this WR-breaking race, US 34-year-old Dominique Arnold led most of the race while Liu showed his labeling strong finish to beat Arnold by 0.02s. Arnold's 12.90s was also faster than the former WR which is a new American record but this day obviously belonged to Liu Xiang. Another American, Trammell Terrence who beat Liu in Paris settled a SB with 13.02s. 2nd best Chinese hurdler, Shi Dongpeng was in 10th position (13.47s, SB). Worth to mention, Lausanne is also the place where Liu broke world junior record (13.12s) in 2002. He also won the last year race here. It surely is a lucky place for him.

Other updates:
In Cuxhaven, Germany on Jul 7, Asian Games Champion and co-AR (1.97m) holder, Tatyana Efimenko of Kyrgystan won the women's high jump in 1.95m, top Asian mark in 2006.

The earlier leader, Yelena Soboleva improved to 3:56.43. Later in Lausanne, Jamal finished 3rd in a sb mark 4:02.45 when Soboleva won in 3:58.60, the 3rd sub-4 min mark for her.

In men's 800m, AR holder Kamel Youssef Saad and Kuwait NR holder Mohd Al-Salhi both raced in Paris and Lausanne. Al-Azemi and Kamel placed 2nd (1:44.63) and 4th (1:44.64) in Paris, respectively while they only finished 11th (1:45.40) and 10th (1:45.21) in Lausanne. Both races were won by Kenyan runners, Bungei Wilfred in Paris(1:44.41) and Alfred Kirwa in Lausanne (1:43.91).

Without WR holder, Saif Saeed Shaheen from Qatar, 3000m steeplechse races in Paris and Lausanne were both won by Kemboi Ezekiel from Kenya in relatively slow times (8:10). Bahrain NR holder, Taher tareq Mubarak only finished 5th (8:18.97) in Paris and 6th (8:22.75).

Japanese Kenji Narisako, a sub-48s hurdler in 400m hurdler only ran 49.33s (8th) in Paris and 49.02s (7th) in Lausanne.

Other notable results in Lausanne:
A very fast men's 200m race in many years was featured by American Xavier Carter's 19.63s (+0.4 m/s), just 0.21s outside WR set by great Michael Johnson 10 years ago.

The 1st sub-1:57 women's 800m race in 2006 set in here when Commonwealth champion, Kenyan Janeth Jepkosgei, evergreen Maria Mutola from Mozambique and current world champion, Cuban Zulia Calatayud crossed the line in fast 1:56.66, 1:56.77 and 1:56.91.
