Two ARs set in Golden Gala in Roma on July 14

One of IAAF golden league, Golden Gala produced 2 Asian records. 800m/1500m double world champion, Rashid Ramzi set AR in 1500m with 3:29.14. The old record was 3:30.00, also held by Ramzi. In this race, Ramzi finished 2nd behind Kenyan Daniel Kipchirchir Komen who clocked 3:29.02 which is world-leading mark in 2006. This race is the 1st sub-3:30 race in 2006. The 2nd AR was produced by 3000m steeplechase WR holder, Saif Saeed Shaheen in men's 5000m with 12:51.98 when he lost to the king of long distance, Ethopian Kenenisa Bekele (12:51.44). This race was considered very fast that top 10 finishers broke 13-minute mark and world youth record was broken by 17-year-old Ethopian Abreham Feleke in 12:54.19.

Other notable results from Asian atheletes:

Saudi athlete, Mohd Al-salhi lowered his NR to 1:43.99 to finish 3rd behind Amine Laalou from Morocco who broke NR in 1:43.25 which is also the world-leading mark in 2006.

Japanese best pole vaulter, Daichi Sawano, placed 7th (5.62m) when Aussies, Paul Burgess and Steven Hooker beat a strong field of European and US pole vaulters. Burgess topped at 5.82m, 10 cm less than his world-leading mark.

Having set AR last week, Mohd Salman Al-Khuwalidi of Saudi Arabia jumped a fine 8.10m to finish 8th among a strong field. 2006 world leader, Irving Saladino won the competition in 8.45m while Olympic and world champion, Dwight Philips of US gave his best shot to produce a 8.32m, seasonal best, but only settled in 4th.

Tatyana Efimenko of Kyrgystan who set Asian leading mark last week, placed 7th in women's high jump with 1.91m. Crotian Blanka Vlasic and Belgium heptathlonist, Tia Hellebaut both jumped 2.00m to place 1-2. Vlasic jumped the world-leading mark 2.03m this year.

5000m NR holder and Olympic finalist, Kayako Fukushi from Japan finished 11th in women's 5000m with Asian leading mark, 15:03.17. The race was won by Ethopian Tirunesh Dibab in 14:52.37. Top 4 finishers were from Ethopia. How dominatant Ethopian runners are in 5k and 10k!

World men's 200m bronze medalist, Shingo Suetsugu, finished poorly in 8th (10.35s) in race 2 of men's 100m. The only sub-10s mark was produced by WR holder, Asafa Powell from Jamaica in 9.85s when he won race 2.

Other notable results:
Women's 100m: Marion Jones of US lost to Jamaican Sherone Simpson. Jones vs Simpson: 10.91s to 10.87s. Simpson earlier set worlding marks in both 100m (10.82s) and 200m (22.00s)in Jamaican National Champ. 10.91s was a seasonal best for Jones and it shows the queen of sprinting is on her comeback.

Men's javelin: Olympic Champion, Noweigian Andreas Thorkildsen won in 90.34m, another 90++ mark for him. He already set the world-leading mark, 91.59m earlier.

Men's 400m: A step closer to Michael Johnson's WR, Jeremy Wariner ran a 43.62s which makes the WR (43.18s)within his touch.

Men's 3k steeplechase: Another sub-8 min mark was produced in the race by Kenyan 7:59.94. He won the race almost by 7 and a half seconds.

Chinese team in Doha

Chinese Athletic association is sending a 52-athlete team to Doha. Unlike the last edition of Asian Games, no athletes will compete in men's 400m, 4x400m, 800m, 1500m, 10000m, hammer and women's heptathlon due to the limitation of the number of athletes. It is a shame because it is the time to test those male middle distance runners who have shown good improvement in US and to examine the 4x400m team who broke NR early this year.
Another 2 fine long distance runners, Bai Xue (Double Asian champion in 5k and 10k) and Wei Yanan (2000 Beijing Marathon champion) were removed from the list due to missing the drug test.

Most of the athletes are expected but there are one surprise: Ci Wang in women's marathon. Unheard runner who owns a pb of 2hr46. I thought Sun Weiwei or Zhang Shujing could be selected. Nevertheless, she might be training extremely well so she is selected.

Fast results for youth athletes in Guangdong provincical games

In Guangdong Provincial Games, some fast results in both boy's and girl's sprints:

Liang Jiahong (18yo), finalist of boy's 100m in world junior champ. won a 100/200 double with 10.48s in 100m and 21.10s in 200m. Liang set 10.32s pb in Asian Junior Champ.

Chen Dayu (18yo) tied with National Junior champion, Li Haolun (18yo) in 110m hurdle (99/100cm) at a time 13.67s. Li ran faster (13.59s, pb) in heats.

Cui Lifu (18yo) won triple jump in 16.58m which can ranked him top 10 in China.

On girl's A group competition, National Junior runner-up in 400m, Wen Xiuyun (18yo) won a 200/400 double. She stopped the clock at 24.22s (pb) in 200m and 53.70s in 400m. But more surprisingly, winners in B group competitions were even faster and set the Chinese fastest times in 2006. Han Huijiang (14yo) ran 23.39s in 200m while Chen Jingwen (also 14yo) finished one-lap race in 52.18s. Both are World no. 1s among all 14-year-olds in 2006. Chen also set a fast 23.91s in 200m while Chen ran 53.90s in 400m to win the silver in respective events.

In A-group 100m hurdle, Fang Jiali (18yo) won in 13.65s while Deng Xiaoqing (18yo) defeated National Junior Champion, Chen Yumei (18yo). Deng won in 57.04s (pb) against Chen's 57.52s.

Another fine results in group B was girl's triple jump when Deng Linuo (14yo) leapt 13.66m to victory.

Despite all good results, it also raises concerns about Chinese 14-year-olds to run national bests. A number of reasons might explain this:
1. Lie about their bone age: This is a common phenomenon is China when they use bone age to identify their true age. This might be risky because the offence might receive a life-ban penalty. THis has been applied on a few African junior athletes recently.
2. Drug: Another common situation, especially at provincial level. Recent efforts can only control at national level but not provincial level. This year, before Liaoning provincial games, Anshan track and field team was caught in the scene after rival team reported to the police. Every city wants to top in the provinvial games and use of drug becomes possible in provincial games.
3. Professional training: Normally, it is the age to build up all the aspects in a wholesome way. Training these youth athletes like a senior atheletes might make them wipen earlier (run good times, jump further). At the same time, it might shorten their career. In China, there are a lot of one-hit stars. One of them is women's Asian junior record holder in 400m, Li Jing. She ran 51s at 15yo and set the record, 50.01s at 17yo in 97 national games. Then, she disappeared. 50.01s still stands the 2nd fastest all-time in Asia and is good enough to rank top 8 in any of recent World Championship and Olympics. Another example is Hu Ning who defeated the great Aussie, Cathay Freeman (2-time 400m world champion and Sydney Olympic champion) in 92 World Junior Champion to win the gold medal in 200m (23.29s). Since, she never excelled in any senior competition.

I think it is a little selfish and short-sighted to produce all these one-hit stars.

Liu Xiang (CHN) sped to a 12.92 race to win the men's 110m hurdles at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York against Terrence Trammell (USA) who set a PB of 12.95. His 12.92 was just 0.01 seconds off his Olympic winning time and erased the meet record of 13.03 set by former Olympic champion Allen Johnson (USA).
