2007 FINA Swimming World Championships Results (Melbourne, Australia)
Day One Report
17 year-old Park Tae Hwan (KOR) stunned an experienced field to capture his first World Championship title in the men's 400m freestyle. Park shadowed Peter Vanderkaay (USA) for most parts of the race but reacted swiftly when Oussama Mellouli (TUN) tried to pull away. He then unleashed a steady yet powerful sprint to the wall in the final 50m to win in a new Asian record of 3:44.30.
Zhou Yafei (CHN) improved her continental mark by 0.12 seconds for a 58.20 swim which placed her fifth in the women's 100m butterfly semi-finals. Her compatriot Xu Yanwei (CHN) also made the final with a time of 58.82. Tao Li (SIN) placed ninth in 59.07 seconds, just missing the final.
Ai Shibata swam to a new Japanese record of 4:05.19 in the women's 400m freestyle final, just 0.2 seconds away from the Asian record held by Chen Yan (CHN). Three Olympic champions made the podium in this race -- Shibata took the bronze medal behind the amazing Laure Manaudou (FRA), who splitted 1:58.69 on her way to the second fastest time ever (4:02.61), and Otylia Jedrzedczak (POL), who returned in style with a PB of 4:04.23.
Kosuke Kitajima (JPN) qualified fastest in the men's 100m breaststroke semi-finals with a time of 1:00.05, after swimming a 59.9 in the heats. Tomomi Morita (JPN) placed seventh in the men's 100m backstroke semi-finals with a time of 54.77 seconds. Masafumi Yamaguchi (JPN) timed 55.34 seconds to place 14th overall.
Asian Games silver medalist Asami Kitagawa (JPN) was a second off her best time in the women's 200m IM semi-finals and placed 10th overall (2:15.79). Choi Hye Ra (KOR) clocked 2:17.10 to place 15th. Asian Games gold medalist Qi Hui, who took a huge risk in her altitude-training just before this Championships, paid a hefty price for her gamble and failed to qualify for the semi-finals. Qi Hui was unsure how well she could recover for her next two events, the 200m breaststroke and 400m IM.
China timed 3:40.48 to finish seventh in the women's 4x100m freestyle final, with Zhu Yingwen anchoring the team in 54.68 seconds.

Day 2 Report
Kosuke Kitajima (JPN) went under a minute again in the men's 100m breaststroke final with his time of 59.96 seconds, but wasn't enough to wrestle the world title from World record-holder Brendan Hansen.
No Asian record in the women's 100m butterfly either. Zhou Yafei (CHN) and Xu Yanwei (CHN) failed to improve their semi-final results and ended in 7th and 8th (58.76 and 59.22).
In the men's 200m freestyle semi-finals, two Asians made the final -- newly crowned 400m freestyle World Champion Park Tae Hwan (KOR) with his 1:47.83 and 2005 World Championship finalist Zhang Lin (CHN) with his 1:48.29. Hanae Ito (JPN) and Reiko Nakamura qualified for the women's 100m backstroke final with their 1:00.62 and 1:00.71 respectively; Asian Games silver medalist Xutian Longzi (CHN) was a shade off her best in 1:01.70 and only placed twelfth.
