posticon 2006 China Nationals updates (Asian Games selection meet)

The 2006 China Nationals commenced today at Luoyang, Henan, which will also be included as one of the selection meets for the Doha Asian Games in December.

Day 1 Finals
(From Xinhua Net, Tianjin Daily and Tonight's Paper)

East Asian Games champion Yang Jieqiao crushed her opponents with her 4:09.76 victory in the women's 400m freestyle final on the first night. Her closest rival was Tianjin team mate Zhu Wenrui in 4:15.27; Yan Zhe of the host team finished third. In the morning heats, Zhu Wenrui was the top qualifier with her 4:14.01 and Yang Jieqiao was 0.04 seconds behind in second place.

In the other two finals, Guangdong (3:25.35) and Shanghai (3:46.82) took the men's and women's 4x100m freestyle relay titles respectively.

Day 2 Finals
(From Sohu Sports, Tianjin Tonight's Paper, Luo Yang Daily, Hubei Daily)

East Asian Games 100m butterfly champion Zhou Jiawei swam a new personal best of 22.79 seconds to win the men's 50m freestyle, narrowly edging out pre-race favourite Huang Shaohua. Worlds medalist Zhu Yingwen cruised to victory in her pet event, the women's 50m freestyle, with a time of 25.74 seconds even though her training was affected due to injuries. Asian Championship silver medalist Zhang Bodong took the gold medal in the men's 100m backstroke with a time of 55.79 seconds, in the absence of Asian champion Ou Yang Kunpeng who was disqualified in the heats due to a 15m underwater rule violation. Asian record holder Zhang Lin (15:20.68) was nearly seven seconds clear of his nearest competitor Zhang Enjian in the men's 1500m freestyle final. 200m backstroke Asian champion Zhao Jing also set a personal best of 1:01.32 to take the women's 100m backstroke title. Qi Hui, triple gold medalist at the recent short-course Worlds, cruised into the women's 200m breaststroke final with her time of 2:28.40 in the semi-finals.

Day 3 Finals
(From Luo Yang Daily)

18 year-old Olympian Lai Zhongjian led from start to finish to set the first Chinese national record at the 2006 China Nationals. He clocked 2:14.06 in the men's 200m breaststroke to erase the old mark of 2:14.28 set by Liu Weijia at the China Games last year. Asian record holder Qi Hui took the women's 200m breaststroke title in 2:24.32 but was challenged throughout the race by East Asian Games champion Wang Qun. The number of Qi Hui's fans has increased since she claimed three gold medals at the short-course 2006 Shanghai Worlds last month; Qi Hui was swarmed by fans yesterday requesting her autograph.

Asian record holder Ouyang Kunpeng easily claimed the men's 50m backstroke title with a time of 25.37 seconds, shaking off the disappointment at his 100m backstroke disqualification in the heats. He acknowledged his mistake after the race and said he will attempt to avoid such errors in future. In the women's 50m backstroke event, Zhao Jing might have stunned the spectators by winning in Lane 8 with a time of 29.16 seconds but unknown to most, she was already crowned Asian Champion in March with a personal best of 28.50 seconds.

East Asian Games champion Huang Shaohua cracked the 50-second barrier again with his 49.89 win in the men's 100m freestyle final whilst Xu Yanwei won the women's 100m freestyle in 55.50 seconds. Zhang Lin bagged another title with his victory (3:50.19) in the men's 400m freestyle final. Guangdong and Navy team deadheated in the men's 4x100m medley relay in 3:44.32; Shanghai had little problem winning the women's medley relay in 4:08.84.

Day 4 Finals
(From Luo Yang Daily)

Another four gold medals were handed out on the fourth night. National record holder Zeng Qiliang pocketed yet another national title in the men's 50m breaststroke in 28.48 seconds. Wang Haibo timed 28.56 for second place whilst Xie Zhi squeaked past Li Xiayan by one hundredth of a second to take third spot in 28.81 seconds.

Qi Hui was expected to reign in the women's breaststroke events in the absence of Luo Xuejuan, but she suffered a hiccup in the women's 50m breaststroke (31.70), her weakest event, where she was defeated by Shanghai Worlds finalist Ji Liping (31.34). Another Worlds finalist Wang Qun clocked 31.75 to place third. Qi Hui led from the start but Ji Liping pulled away from the 30m mark.

In the men's 200m butterfly, Asian champion Chen Yin took the title in 1:58.46; Zheng Huazhang and Zheng Lei came in second and third. In the women's 200m butterfly, Gong Jie was the surprise winner with her 2:10.84, relegating Asian champion Jiao Liuyang to second spot; Liu Zige of Shanghai B team claimed the bronze medal.

Day 5 Finals
(From Xinhua Net, Luoyang Daily, Tianjin Evening News)

Two Asian records tumbled in the pool on the fifth night. Asian Champion Zhou Jiawei regained the men's 50m butterfly record from Ryo Takayasu (JPN) with his 23.86 win in the final. Zhou Jiawei originally held the record from last year's East Asian Games until Takayasu lowered the record twice at the Japan Nationals last month. Zhou Jiawei said he wasn't in top shape for this meet but he tried to get the record back as best he could. Olympic silver medalist (relay) Xu Yanwei trimmed her own Asian mark by 0.04 seconds to win the women's 50m butterfly final against rival and National Team team-mate Zhou Yafei. Xu and Zhou clocked 26.59 and 26.88 seconds respectively. Xu Yanwei revealed she didn't train much after the recent short-course Worlds so this swim was quite a pleasant surprise to her.

Qi Hui, triple short-course World Champion, cracked the 1:08 mark again with her 1:07.61 victory in the women's 100m breaststroke final. The last time she went under 1:08 was at the China Games last October. In the men's 100m breaststroke final, Asian Champion Xie Zhi (1:02.28) touched the wall ahead of Lai Zhongjian who erased the 200m national mark earlier in the meet.

Distance freestyle specialist Yang Jieqiao ventured into new grounds and sparkled with a surprise victory in the women's 200m freestyle. She won the title with a personal best of 1:59.68, nearly two seconds ahead of Asian Champion Tang Jingzhi. Her Tianjin team-mate Zhu Wenrui took the bronze medal in 2:01.76. The men's 200m freestyle title went to Yu Chenglong of Liaoning (1:50.80). The 200m IM finals for both men and women were rather slow; Shanghai Worlds finalist Zhao Tao clocked 2:02.10 to win the men's event whilst Zhao Jing took the women's title in 2:16.88, barely an hour after swimming the 200m backstroke semi-finals.
