posticon 2006 China Asian Games Trials

2006 China Asian Games Trials (1st Sep to 6th Sep 2006)

Each time a swim meet draws near, rumours will begin to swirl around the biggest star of China's swim team - Luo Xuejuan. This time, according to Head Coach Zhang Yadong, reporters have in hand five different versions of why she left the national team to train with her Zhejiang provincial team. The rumours range from Luo being expelled because of disputes with the Head Coach himself to her conflicts with the national team's interests as a result of a budding romance; the other three versions -- too many commercial activities, she offended some influential person(s), she's physically unfit to compete at 2008 Olympics.

Shang Xiutang, VP of China Swimming Association, yesterday told the press Luo wasn't relegated to the provincial team at all. "First, Luo Xuejian is still a member of China's national team. Second, she did not commit any mistake severe enough to warrant an expulsion from the national team." According to schedule, Luo was supposed to resume training after the China Nationals in May. The coaches even planned for her to focus more on the 200m event. Shang further explained, "However, Luo wasn't able to take on regular heavy training due to her fluctuating conditions. Her main rival Leisel Jones kept lowering the world records and within the team, young talents such as World junior champion Wang Qun and Asian champion Ji Liping have improved tremendously. Luo Xuejuan felt a great sense of urgency to return to her best and piled a lot of pressure on herself, affecting both her recuperation and training mentally. So in July, when we sent separate teams overseas or to altitude training camps, we allowed her to take a short break in her hometown Hangzhou and subsequently train there for two months."

Shang also emphasized that Luo Xuejuan had trained intensively for the past six years and it would take a toil on anyone in her shoes. He also expressed confidence in Luo Xuejuan's recovery, "2008 is still two years away, a swimmer of Luo's calibre should have no trouble returning to her best shape within this timeframe."

The selection trials stretches from 1st September to 6th September and will follow the schedule of 2006 Doha Asian Games, including 50m events for the first time in the history of the Games.

Re: 2006 China Asian Games Trials

Day 1 Report

Short-course World Champion Wu Peng hammered a 1:56.46 swim to win his pet event - the men's 200m butterfly, ahead of Asian Champion Chen Yin. Olympic champion Luo Xuejuan came in second with a time of 1:09.14 in the women's 100m breaststroke. Luo Nan, short-course Worlds medalist in the 200m breaststroke, stunned the field including Luo Xuejuan, Asian Champion Ji Liping (1:09.99) and World Junior Champion Wang Qun, to claim the title in 1:08.95. Considering she had only resumed training for the past few months, Luo Xuejuan was satisfied with her swim. "Today's race was simply to test the waters and see where I stand after two months of training. My goals for 2008 Beijing Olympics haven't changed. "

Qi Hui, triple gold medalist at short-course Worlds, qualified for both the women's 100m breaststroke and women's 200m IM finals on the first night. She actually placed only 9th overall in the 200m IM preliminaries despite winning her heat, but was fortunate enough to qualify for the final after someone withdrew. After the morning scare, Qi Hui decided to focus on this event and pulled out from the keenly contested 100m breaststroke final although she led the qualifiers with 1:09.71 in the heats. In the evening final, she turned the tide in her favour to clinch an easy victory in 2:13.56. 400m IM Asian champion Zhang Xin claimed the silver medal behind Qi Hui.

Zhang Lin, double Pan Pacs medalist, finished comfortably ahead of his nearest competitor, Zhang Enjian, with a time of 1:48.64 in the men's 200m freestyle final. In the women's 50m backstroke, Asian Champion Zhao Jing clinched the gold medal whilst World Championship silver medalist Gao Chang was surprisingly relegated to third spot. Beijing's 4x200m freestyle team, led by Zhang Lin and Chen Zuo, defeated rivals Zhejiang team in the men's relay final.

Re: 2006 China Asian Games Trials

Head coach Zhang Yadong was clearly disappointed with his team's performances on the second day of competition. "Others are sprinting whilst we're still strolling along."

Asian recordholder Ouyang Kunpeng won the men's 50m backstroke event convincingly in 25.67 seconds but was 0.49 seconds off his record. Olympic finalist Pang Jiaying captured the women's 200m freestyle title with a time of 1:58.95, almost a second off her personal best. Short-course World champion Yang Yu placed second in 1:59.49, nearly 1.8 seconds from her best time.

The most disappointing event to Zhang Yadong tonight was the women's 200m butterfly final. He was expecting some good results from the young talents, but was let down by their mediocre results. Asian champion Jiao Liuyang took the title after going through a similar situation as Qi Hui on the first night; she was placed 10th overall but two qualifiers withdrew which allowed Jiao to swim and win the final.

In the men's 200m IM final, China Games champion Qu Jingyu, who suffered an injury before the Shanghai FINA Worlds in April, was victorious with a time of 2:00.89; he apparently made good progress in his recovery. Asian champion Zhao Tao finished behind Qu in 2:02.70. The standard of men's breaststroke in China still stagnates -- China Games winner Wang Mengjian claimed the gold medal in a slow 1:02.30, 0.08 seconds ahead of Asian champion Xie Zhi.

Re: 2006 China Asian Games Trials

After winning a bronze medal in 1:59.59 last night, Yang Jieqiao dominated her race in the women's 400m freestyle with a time of 4:08.67. Her team-mate Zhu Wenrui set a personal best of 4:10.88 to make it a 1-2 finish for Tianjin team.

Qi Hui clocked 2:25.38 to narrowly defeat Luo Nan in the women's 200m breaststroke final, an event in which she once held the world record. Qi Hui admitted in her post-race interview she didn't peak for this selection meet because she was solely after a spot on the Asian Games team.

East Asian Games champion Pang Jiaying grabbed her fourth gold medal of the meet, winning the women's 100m freestyle final in 55.01 seconds. Reigning Asian Games champion Xu Yanwei was second in 55.25 and booked her ticket to defend her crown in Doha.

Ouyang Kunpeng was more than a second off his national record in the men's 100m backstroke event but still won the final in 55.43 seconds. Asian champion Wang Dong timed a new personal best of 52.87 seconds to claim victory ahead of national record holders Zhou Jiawei and Wu Peng.

Re: 2006 China Asian Games Trials

Finally the sparks flew on the fourth night of competition after three days of lacklustre performances -- two Asian records and one national record were rewritten. Former world champion (relay) Zhou Yafei cracked a twelve year-old Asian record (58.38) set by Olympic silver medalist Liu Limin in the women's 100m butterfly. Zhou had threatened the record in several previous attempts, including a 58.43 at the East Asian Games last year. She finally succeeded with a 58.32 swim tonight which she attributed to her new training programme.

Less than an hour later, Zhou leapt into the pool to set her second Asian mark of the night in the 50m butterfly final -- slicing 0.29 seconds off team-mate Xu Yanwei's previous record.

Zhou Yafei's record-breaking swims managed to put a smile on Head coach Zhang Yadong's face but he was obviously craving something greater. Zhang told the reporters he was pleased for Zhou Yafei but the Asian records are still a long distance from the current world records. The sole national mark fell in the men's 200m breaststroke final. Lai Zhongjian lowered his own record to 2:13.68, from the 2:14.06 he set earlier this year in May.

Zhao Jing captured her second backstroke gold medal in the 100m backstroke with a time of 1:01.29. She'll spearhead China's backstroke challenge against the mighty Japanese female backstrokers -- Ito Hanae and Reiko Nakamura (1:00.6-2:09.1, 1:00.8-2:08.8 in the 100m and 200m events).

Xu Yanwei notched her first individual win of the meet (25.03 secs) in the 50m freestyle final after finishing second in two individual events and fifth in another. In the men's 100m freestyle final, Asian champion Huang Shaohua defeated Asian record holder Chen Zuo.

Tianjin duo Yang Jieqiao and Zhu Wenrui took first and fourth place in the women's 800m freestyle (8:31.78 and 8:39.9). Zhao Tao timed 4:22.02 to upset Wu Peng in the men's 400m IM final.

On the final night, Qi Hui swam her third fastest time 4:39.76 in the 400m IM, also a top five time in the world this year. Even though Olympic champion Luo Xuejuan was way slender than ever before due to a lack of strength training, she still reign in the 50m breaststroke event, winning in 31.57 seconds.

Cai Li sprinted to a narrow victory in the men's 50m freestyle (23.06 secs). Asian record holder Zhang Lin held on to a body-length lead throughout the race and withstood a strong late charge from Zhang Enjian to prevail in the men's 1500m freestyle final.

Re: 2006 China Asian Games Trials

Wow, thanks a lot ! emoticon I haven't seen the complete results anywhere on the net yet so it's great we finally have access to the top-3 results.

Me too, I can only find time to update the swimming forums these days, will have to catch up on the others (badminton, tennis etc) soon.

The Japanese swimmers have also swum some fast times at minor local meets.

Re: 2006 China Asian Games Trials

From the results listed, both Zhang Enjian and Yu Chenglong swam PBs in the men's 200m free and went under 1:50 for the first time. Zhang Enjian also did very well in the 1500m free, with a new PB and nearly upstaging Zhang Lin.

The women's 200m free wasn't that bad afterall, with four swimmers going under 2:00. Yu Rui did quite well in the distance events -- silver in 400m IM (PB), bronze in 400m free (PB) and 800m free. Zhao Jing dominated the backstroke events in all three distances with a PB in the 100m. Xutian Longzi also stood out in this meet, going under 29 and 1:02 for the first time in the 50m and 100m back.

Xu Yanwei's 58.73 swim in the women's 100m fly was her second fastest time. Hong Wenwen continued to perform consistently whilst Jiao Liuyang also went under 1:00 for the first time (59.77). Jiao's breakthrough in the 100m fly meant her 200m fly should be even better, no wonder Zhang Yadong was disappointed with the 2:10s in the women's 200m fly. Jiao also did a new PB in the 400m IM (4:42), so both her speed and endurance have improved.
