Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

With less than a month from the Asian Games, China's national teams in swimming, diving, synchronised swimming and water polo are all at crucial stages of preparations. Li Hua, CSA's deputy director, mentioned that the four teams will fly to Doha between end November and early December, and will treat the Asian Games and the Melbourne Worlds in March as milestones in their preparations towards Beijing Olympics.

The Asian Games is viewed as the most important meet this year for the swim team. The CSA hopes the junior swimmers can step up and perform well at this meet. Fifteen year-old women's 100m breaststroke World Junior Champion Wang Qun is among four tipped to impress, despite still lacking in physique (The other three are Zhao Jing in backstroke, Yang Jieqiao in distance freestyle and Jiao Liuyang in 200m butterfly). Head coach Zhang Yadong revealed," Wang Qun has achieved several personal best standards in training recently. She should do well at the Asian Games. " Zhang Yadong was previously Olympic Champion Luo Xuejuan's coach and couldn't help comparing the two swimmers, "Wang Qun is currently very close to Luo Xuejuan's level when Luo was her age. She certainly has much capacity to attain another level in future with more racing experience. "

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

China's Asian Games swimming team roster was released yesterday. No surprise as nearly all the top swimmers in China are on the team, except for Olympic champion Luo Xuejuan, who's currently training with the provincial team, and World bronze medalist Zhu Yingwen, who was nursing injuries earlier and failed to qualify at the trials. Basically, this team is almost the same one which represented China at the short-course Shanghai World Championships in April this year.

Coaches

Zhang Yadong (Head Coach), Mo Zhengjie, Han Bingyuan, Pan Jiazhang, Xu Guoyi, Wei Yaping, Ye Jin, Yao Ying, Xu Huiqin, Chen Yinhong, Shi Xiaoming.

Swimmers

Men:

Zhao Tao, Qu Jingyu, Lai Zhongjian, Zhou Jiawei, Yu Chenglong, Zhang Lin, Chen Zuo, Chen Yin, Wang Dong, Zhang Bodong, Cai Li, Wang Haibo, Wu Peng, Ouyang Kunpeng, Huang Shaohua, Xie Zhi and Zhang Enjian.

Women :

Qi Hui, Zhao Jing, Deng Biying, Bai Anqi, Tang Jingzhi, Luo Nan, Wang Qun, Li Mo, Gao Chang, Yu Rui, Wang Dan, Zhou Yafei, Pang Jiaying, Tang Yi, Xu Yanwei, Ji Liping, Yang Yu, Yang Jieqiao, Zhu Wenrui, Jiao Liuyang, Zhang Xin and Xutian Longzi.

The men's team will be at full force in Doha, with all their national champions in the squad. Triple short-course World Champion Qi Hui will lead the women's team whilst World Junior Champion Wang Qun is out to prove herself a worthy replacement for Luo Xuejuan. A surprise inclusion is Deng Biying who had some problems with the CSA earlier this year. Her best events are women's 200m fly and 400m IM but the event she'll swim in Doha is likely the 200m fly, i.e. if the rookie swims at all. Deng Biying did not finish in the top three at both selection trials in 2006, so she must have swum some impressive times at training camps prior to the release of the team list.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

China: Head coach Zhang Yadong claimed his team can win at least 12 swimming gold medals at the upcoming Doha Asian Games and with some good luck, may even push their gold medal tally to 25 or 26.

Due to a late change in schedule, Wu Peng may have to drop one of his two events (the men's 400m IM) and focus on the 200m butterfly.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

Japan: The Japanese Asian Games swim team is without several prominent names, apparently opting to rest some of their top swimmers for the Melbourne World Championships in March 2007.

1. Ai Shibata (Women's 800m freestyle 2004 Olympic gold medalist, 400m freestyle 2005 World Championship silver medalist and 400m freestyle 2006 Pan Pacs gold medalist)

2. Tomomi Morita (Men's 100m backstroke 2004 Olympic bronze medalist, Asian record holder in 100m backstroke)

3. Ito Hanae (Women's 100m backstroke 2006 Pan Pacs gold medalist and 200m backstroke's current World No. 2)

4. Genki Imamura (Men's 200m breaststroke 2005 World Championship Bronze Medalist)

5. Sachiko Yamada (Women's 800m and 1500m freestyle Asian record holder, 400m freestyle 2006 Pan Pacs bronze medalist)

Nevertheless, there are still other stars to watch, such as Kosuke Kitajima , Reiko Nakamura, Yuko Nakanishi, Mai Nakamura, Takeshi Matsuda and Takashi Yamamoto.

China: China's Asian Games team has arrived in Doha today. Head coach Zhang Yadong stressed that they're aiming for personal best times rather than gold medals. He also revealed there are even cash incentives this time for setting world records and 2006 World number one times.

From Wu Peng's blog yesterday,

" We'll depart for Doha today. In the morning, everyone gathered at the assembly ground of Guangzhou Wei Lun Sports School for a solemn flag-raising ceremony. I promised to myself I'll get the national anthem to play in Doha as it did today. I led the team in a pledge for the first time and it was very emotional for me.

I heard it'll be a long nine-hour plane ride. Another painful long-distance trip ! emoticon

After reading all of the comments left in my blog, I'd like to thank all of you for your support and well wishes. I'll give my best in the pool and won't let you down.

I have a friend who's ill and will go for an operation in two days. I wish for his speedy recovery. "

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

Zhu Yingwen, who failed to qualify for the Asian Games, took the women's 100m freestyle title on the first day of competition at China's Winter Swimming Championships. She clocked 55.63 secs, 0.17 seconds ahead of World Junior Championship silver-medalist Tang Yi. It was the second PB for 13 year-old Tang Yi this month; she led off in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the Asian Games with a PB of 2:00.18.

Asian Games bronze medalist Wang Dong claimed victory in the men's 100m butterfly final. Yuan Chen, who was second at the September Asian Games trials, won the women's 200m butterfly in 2:11.87.

Jiangsu team swept both the men's and women's 400m IM events through Li Ziqiang and Zhang Chen. Zhang Zhitao was the winner of the men's 200m freestyle final.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

Zhu Yingwen continued to build on her successful return from injury by winning her pet event -- the 50m freestyle in 25.34 seconds.

The 25 year-old is looking forward to the Beijing Olympics. "I'm very pleased with my swims so far, especially the 50m race. I've recovered well and 25.34 secs will give me good confidence to prod on towards 2008."

When asked whether she can still perform in 2008 at the age of 27, Zhu replied, "You can check the profiles of the past Olympic finalists, most of them were over 25. It's the best age for a competitive swimmer in terms of experience, maturity and mentality. "

This meet will be one of two selection trials for the Melbourne World Championships in March 2007, the other being the Asian Games. Most of China's top swimmers, who attended the Asian Games, skipped this meet to grab some rest before commencing their training for the Worlds. Zhu Yingwen is one of two swimmers given "wild cards" for China's Worlds team next year (the other is Luo Xuejuan) but she still decided to compete at this selection trials.

Tang Yi grabbed her first gold medal of the meet with victory in the 200m freestyle final. Her 2:00.53 was just 0.4 secs off her PB. "I didn't swim to well, I was going for a 1:59."

15 year-old Asian Games silver medalist Xutian Longzi easily claimed the women's 100m backstroke title in 1:02.33 but was also dissatisfied with her performance. "My turn wasn't good enough and I still lacked power in my strokes. "

Sun Yang led for the whole race in the men's 400m freestyle final to win in 3:52.12. Lai Zhongjian took the men's 100m breaststroke crown whilst the men's 200m backstroke title went to Zhang Bodong. Wang Dong also won his second gold medal of the meet in the men's 50m butterfly. Chen Huijia was victorious in the women's 200m breaststroke final whilst Hong Wenwen set a PB of 27.34 secs to win the women's 50m butterfly.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

China:

On the third day of China's Winter Championships, 400m IM Asian Games silver medalist Yu Rui improved her 400m free PB to 4:10.91 and defeated team-mate Tan Miao for the title. Half an hour later, she was back into the pool to race the 800m free final. Tan Miao reversed the fortunes to win 8:39.75 against Yu Rui. Yu Rui complained after climbing up from the pool, "I'm exhausted. It's killing me so much I couldn't swim any further. "

Zhang Lin triumphed in the men's 100m freestyle, an event he seldom swim. Hong Wenwen maintained her consistency in the women's 100m butterfly with another high 59 swim. She clocked 59.89 seconds to win her first national title in this event.

Lai Zhongjian took the men's 200m breaststroke gold medal with a time of 2:15.68. Chen Yanlong won the men's 200m butterfly final with a time of 2:00.23 whilst Zhao Tao swam 2:01.96 to win the men's 200m individual medley.

South Korea:

Park Tae Hwan, South Korea's rising star in distance freestyle, won three individual gold medals and set two continental records at the Asian Games. He was subsequently voted the MVP of the Games and received prize money of USD $50K. South Korea's swimming federation also announced recently they will reward Park for his efforts with a sum above USD $100K.

China:

Yu Yao, who represented Team China at the short-course World Championships in April in the women's 100m IM, swam a PB of 2:15.51 in the 200m IM to take her first long-course national title. Xutian Longzi also clocked a PB in winning the women's 200m backstroke final.

Sun Yang continued to dominate the men's distance freestyle events in a depleted field. He timed 15:26.05 to win the 1500m freestyle. Wang Haibo and Ji Liping won the men's and women's 50m breaststroke events. Other titles went to Shi Yang in the men's 50m freestyle and Zhang Bodong in the men's 200m backstroke.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

China:

(Beijing Youth Network) Luo Xuejuan has been hospitalised for nearly a month now after encountering heart problems during training. Head coach Zhang Yadong finally stepped forward to clarify doubts and rumours about her health. He said Luo just went through a minor operation and is currently under treatment in Beijing for more than a week. According to him, Luo's ailment will only affect training and competition of an athlete but won't cause problems otherwise for a non-athlete. Zhang insisted Luo's conditions weren't as severe as rumoured. He also revealed she'll resume training in her hometown Hangzhou a week from now and said if it's a major operation, Luo wouldn't be able to resume training so soon.

(Sports Paper)

One of the rumours from inside sources mentioned Luo's exact health problems have not been diagnosed by many medical experts using hi-tech diagnosis equipment. This was because her symptoms occurred irregularly and vanished very soon, thus making it very difficult for experts to pinpoint the exact problem.

(Bandao City Paper)

Wang Dong has qualified for the World Championships next year after winning two events at the trials last week. He claimed the men's 100m fly title in 53.58 seconds and the 50m fly title in 24.23 seconds. Wang Dong said he was satisfied with his results, "I didn't do too badly. After the Asian Games, we went back to our respective home towns, rested for quite some time and didn't train at all. I came here (Shanghai) directly from home to compete, so I haven't had much preparations for this meet. "

(Yangtze Business Paper)

Two of China's most promising young swimmers, Zhao Jing and Deng Biying, returned to their hometown Wuhan after the Asian Games. Deng Biying had a wonderful time with Wuhan's traditional dishes. Zhao Jing mentioned her most unforgettable moments of 2006 were at the Asian Championships in March where she set a new meet record and swam below 2:10 for the first time. Deng lamented she had a less eventful year than 2005 where she performed rather well at China's National Games. Zhao felt she has accumulated a lot of valuable experience in various aspects since last year whilst Deng felt she hasn't matured much this year.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

China (Xinhua Net):

Shang Xiutang, Director of the Chinese Swimming Federation, expressed his disappointment at the rumours surrounding Luo Xuejuan's medical conditions. He shook his head and sighed," She doesn't have any strange and undetectable illness ?! There's no such thing as rumoured in some media. Director Li Hua and I both visited her at the hospital which was part of her regular check-ups as follow-up to her therapies. As for her rate of recovery, it's not up for me to say anything, I'll leave it to the medical experts to explain. " Shang also revealed that Luo will commence her winter training very soon as a national team member.
