Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
Japan:
Another five short-course Asian records went on the second day of competition at the 2007 Japan Open.
Yesterday, Kosuke Kitajima was outshone by his national team mates in multiple record-breaking feats. Today, he regained some of his former glitter with two short-course Asian records in the men's breaststroke events. Kitajima held off strong challenges from several foreign swimmers including World champion Oleg Lisogor (UKR) to take the 50m breaststroke title with a new record of 27.14 seconds. He also slashed more than a second off his Asian record in the men's 200m breaststroke to win in 2:04.96 (28.33,59.56,1:31.88). In the women's 200m breaststroke final, Nanaka Tamura went 2:19.89 and erased an eight year-old Japanese record of 2:20.22 set by former World champion Masami Tanaka.
The first continental mark of the night went to Asian Games champion Reiko Nakamura who swam 58.10 seconds to defeat Pan Pacs champion Hanae Ito (58.53) and previous record holder Mai Nakamura (59.32). Yuka Kato again bettered the short-course Asian record twice, in both the women's 100m butterfly heats and final. Kato went under Zhou Yafei's (CHN) 57.60 record set last week with her 57.58 morning heats swim, then lowered the record even further to 57.24. She revealed she was actually going for a 56 swim but will now have to wait for the short-course world championships next year to achieve her target. Asian record holder Ryo Takayasu (JPN) improved his own record to 50.74 seconds in the men's 100m butterfly whilst Kazuki Ohbayashi set a new high school record with his 51.85 and shared second spot with 200m butterfly record holder Ryuichi Shibata.
Two other Japanese records came from Tomomi Morita in the men's 100m backstroke (51.55) and Hisayoshi Sato in the men's 100m freestyle (48.51). Jade Edmistone (AUS) and Therese Alshammar (SWE) dominated their respective events, the women's 50m breaststroke (30.66) and 100m freestyle (53.23).

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
2007 Japan Swim
The Japanese swimmers continue to swim fast at 2007 Japan Swim after a successful trip to the Melbourne World Championships where they ranked third behind U.S.A and Australia. Two Asian standards of 7:50.93 and 23.84s were recorded at this meet by Takeshi Matsuda (JPN) in the men's 800m freestyle and Ryo Takayasu (JPN) in the men's 50m butterfly.
Olympic and World Champion Kosuke Kitajima dominated the men's breaststroke events with his 1:00.34 and 2:11.04 swims in the 100m and 200m races. Ryuichi Shibata clocked a fast time of 1:55.48 in the men's 200m butterfly and also surprisingly defeated both of Japan's 100m butterfly representatives at the World Championships -- Takashi Yamamoto and Ryo Takayasu. His winning time of 52.30 secs came very close to Yamamoto's Asian record.
There were also several Japanese records set at this meet. Hisayoshi Sato blazed a 49.32 to take down the men's 100m freestyle Japanese record; Makoto Ito and Daisuke Hosokawa also went under 50 seconds with their times of 49.73 and 49.99. Reiko Nakamura set two national records in the women's backstroke events -- 28.36 in the 50m and 1:00.29 in the 100m. She also swam a fast 2:08.85 in the 200m backstroke.
Although Nanaka Tamura failed to qualify for the 2007 Worlds, she showed her potential at this meet with a 2:24.55 in the women's 200m breaststroke, less than 0.5 seconds off Masami Tanaka's Japanese record. Megumi Taneda also set a PB of 2:25.02 which signalled a return to the top for Japanese female breaststroke swimmers. Ryosuke Irie set a high school record of 1:58.42 in the men's 200m backstroke final to defeat Asian record holder Takashi Nakano and World Championship finalist Tomomi Morita.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
China: The first Olympic qualifying trials for Chinese swimmers has been postponed to May 15th. There will be morning finals at this meet, a decision made after consecutive disappointments at the Asian Games, where they tied with Japan in number of gold medals, and at the World Championships where many failed to perform.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
China:
Their first Olympic selection trials will start on Tuesday, adopting the same morning-final schedule as at the 2008 Olympics. China's national team has included morning training sessions to adapt to the new Olympic schedule and most of the swimmers had a tough time adjusting for the past two months. According to Head Coach Zhang Yadong, despite the early hiccups, his swimmers are starting to cope with their new training plans. Wu Peng has opted to drop the 200m fly at the selection trials and instead swim the 100m fly and two other freestyle events.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
China:
The actual schedule of the selection trials is out and it's not exactly the same as 2008 Olympic schedule. Although there will be morning finals, there's no semi-final and the order of events is completely different, with six days of racing.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
The first evening heats saw two major upsets -- Asian record holder Zhou Yafei only placed 14th in the women's 100m butterfly with her 1:01.48 and World Short-course Champion Yang Yu failed to qualify with her 2:02.43 which placed her 10th overall in the women's 200m freestyle. Zhou Yafei was upset at not qualifying for the final, "I'm furious ! I held back in the heats, thinking I should qualify easily. No way I'll make the same mistake next time." She recently lowered the Asian record twice, at the World Championship trials and in the semi-finals of the Melbourne World Championships. Jiao Liuyang, who finished 4th in the women's 200m butterfly at Melbourne Worlds, swam a PB of 59.72 in the heats to lead the qualifiers.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
Jiao Liuyang improved on her PB to win the women's 100m butterfly in 59.48 seconds. She said she floundered her last stroke to the wall and her time would be faster if not for that. Jiao Liuyang said the morning finals didn't affect her that much as compared to many others because she's still very young and is able to adapt to various conditions easily.
Zhou Jiawei just missed the Olympic A standard in the men's 100m butterfly and complained he would have qualified had it been an evening final.
Pang Jiaying took the women's 200m freestyle in a mediocre time of 2:00.31. She wasn't happy with her result and said she's still not used to racing her best in the morning.
None of the four winners swam faster than the Olympic A standard which will surely worry their Head Coach.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
Day 2 Finals
Unlike the first "day" of competition, several swimmers achieved Olympic A standards on the second, at both afternoon heats and the finals next morning.
Zhang Lin, who already qualified at the 2007 World Championships, won the men's 200m freestyle final in 1:48.45 for what he revealed to be his morning PB -- slightly better than his fastest clocked at his morning training sessions.
Another female IM star is on the rise, with 13 year-old Li Xuanxu winning her first national title in 4:38.54, a drop of nearly ten seconds from her previous best before this meet (she went 4:39 in the heats the day before). "I didn't think too much about the race, I was just trying to swim my best time. I've never ever thought of competing at the Beijing Olympics because I'm still too young." Another 13 year-old Yu Xin clinched the silver medal in a PB of 4:40.99. Third-placed Zhang Chen also went under the A standard with her time of 4:42.01. In the women's 400m IM heats, four swimmers bettered the A standard including the eventual winner and silver-medalist.
In the women's 200m backstroke, three swimmers bettered the A standard, two at the heats and one in the final with Zhao Jing winning the race and twice going under the A standard.
