Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

Day 5

Finally, another Chinese man succeeded in qualifying for Olympic selection ( for the men, it's almost guaranteed selection ) -- Lai Zhongjian set a Chinese national record of 2:13.63 in the men's 200m breaststroke heats. He subsequently won this event the next day albeit in a much slower time of 2:15. In the women's 100m freestyle, Pang Jiaying went under the A standard twice -- 55.00 in the heats and 55.11 in the final.

After clocking a PB of 25.68 and winning bronze in a rarely attempted event -- the women's 50m freestyle yesterday, Zhao Jing came from behind to snatch victory in the women's 100m backstroke with a PB of 1:01.19. She was trailing Xutian Longzi, World Championship bronze medalist (medley relay), throughout the race but had a better finish at the wall. Xutian Longzi clocked 1:01.26, also under the A standard but slightly off her PB at the Worlds, and appeared visibly upset at the loss. "I was leading at that point but didn't adjust my stroke-rate properly for a perfect finish and had to take an extra stroke." Her coach consoled her and told her to look forward instead to the next major competition, the 2008 Olympics.

Yang Jieqiao, who missed the 2007 World Championships because she couldn't recover fully in time after an operation, showed she's the female distance swimmer to beat in China when she won the women's 800m freestyle with a new PB. Yang Jieqiao was the fastest qualifier in the 400m freestyle final earlier but a different race strategy from usual cost her the race -- she started off with a furious pace and faltered badly at the end of the race to finish only 6th. In the 800m freestyle final, she was obviously better-prepared and was able to lead from start to finish to overcome two very young competitors from Guangdong who were the top two qualifiers in the heats and also under the Olympic A standard.

Day 6 Finals

It was another disappointing morning for China's male swimmers when Zhang Lin failed to reach his pre-meet target of qualifying in the men's 1500m freestyle. However, second-placed Sun Yang provided hope for the future as the 15 year-old boy improved his PB by 12 seconds and nearly caught up with Zhang Lin only to lose by a narrow margin of 0.05 seconds. Another up-and-coming swimmer Zu Lijun took the bronze in a PB of 15:21.10.

After an excellent performance in the women's 400m IM, 13 year-old Li Xuanxu again went under the A standard twice in the 200m IM event. She clocked 2:14.68 in the heats, then swam within 2:15 again in the final to win against Zhao Jing who also went under the A standard with her PB of 2:14.96.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

China:

Zhang Yadong summarised the Olympic selection trials, which just ended, as a good meet but not great -- more swimmers reached the Olympic A standards than at the World Championships but their results are still way behind the best swimmers in the world.

He noted that swimmers from the provincial teams performed better than the national team on the whole, even though the national team has specifically prepared for morning finals with their morning training sessions. There were a lot of complaints from the swimmers in the national team that they weren't used to the morning regime and the schedule hurt their preparations. Zhang Yadong acknowledged there are still teething problems with the schedule, e.g. breakfast was delayed and came within an hour to lunch. However, he stressed that they will continue with their morning training but will also adjust the hours accordingly for the most suitable schedule.

Zhang also said he's still very confident with his team's 2008 prospects despite the poor results. When asked about Li Xuanxu, the 13 year-old girl who seemingly came out from nowhere to clock a 4:38 in the women's 400m IM, Zhang revealed that he had no idea who she was before this meet because she's training in the provincial team. Zhang thought she's a bright spark in this meet and her performances may have earned her a place in the national team. However, he also cautioned about overestimating her 2008 chances because they'll need to observe her longer to see how she develops.

Some background information on Li Xuanxu
(From Hunan Daily)

Li Xuanxu, the "mysterious" 13 year-old girl, provided some rare sparks at the selection trials but few knew who she was and how she came to swim so fast.

According to this report from Hunan Daily, Li Xuanxu smashed three provincial records and won seven gold medals last year at the provinical games in Zhuzhou, Hunan.

She joined the Guangdong provincial team in April 2003 and has trained for four years. At the 2004 Guangdong youth championships, she was the only swimmer to win the "Xiong Ni prize for future stars" ( Xiong Ni won multiple men's diving medals at three Olympics including two individual gold medals in 1996 and 2000 ).

In 2005, at the age of 11, she represented Hunan at the 10th China National Games. At the Nationals early last year, she was praised for her performances by CSA's deputy director Shang Xiutang.

Her coach Feng Zhen has played down her charge's chances at Beijing next year. "She's still too young for 2008, she'll only be 14. We want her to focus on her techniques now and don't want to increase her strength training too soon. It's more likely she'll swim in 2012."

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

China:

- The bulk of China's national team separated into two groups for altitude training at Kunming Highlands and Qinghai Duoba Highlands. Another small group remained in Beijing including Qi Hui who had a bitter experience experimenting with altitude training methods before the Worlds.

- Yao Zhengjie was recently appointed Assistant Head Coach to the national swim team.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

China:

Zhou Jiawei set a new Chinese record of 52.39 seconds in the men's 100m butterfly on the second day of their National University Games, slightly off the Asian record of 52.27 seconds held by Takashi Yamamoto (JPN). He also earned two other gold medals in 50m free (22.86s) and 50m fly (24.11s) of the men's Division B events.

2007 World Championship silver medalist Wu Peng placed second in the 100m fly with a time of 53.04 seconds whilst setting a meet record of 1:56.68 in the men's 200m fly. World Championship finalist Chen Yin also went under the previous meet record with his 1:57.56. Wu Peng, as with all swimmers on the men's national team, will skip the World University Games next month due to a clash in schedule with the Chinese Invitational. He'll however still swim at the Japan Open.

Asian Championships gold medalist (relay) Chen Yanyan and Asian Games gold medalist (relay) Zhao Jing claimed the women's 100m backstroke titles in Division A (1:02.43) and B (1:01.85) respectively.

Liu Xiaoyu stunned three national team members Wang Qun, Luo Nan and Ji Liping to win the women's 100m breaststroke in 1:09.14. Zhang Lin won the men's 400m freestyle easily with a meet record of 3:50.96.

Asian Games gold medalist Pang Jiaying set two meet records in the women's 100m and 200m freestyle. She'll attend the World University Games together with team mates such as Xu Yanwei, Zhan Shu etc.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

China : National University Games

Asian Games champion Yang Jieqiao claimed the women's 800m freestyle title and improved on her PB to 8:26.32. World Short-course Championship finalist Zhang Xin swam 2:14.69 to defeat phenom Li Xuanxu in the women's 200m IM. Chen Yanyan smashed the women's 200m backstroke meet record to win in 2:11.89, also a new PB for her. Zhao Jing grabbed the women's Division B gold medal in this event with her 2:13.61. Gong Jie swam to a new PB of 2:09.43 in the women's 200m butterfly Division B event.

China :

Rumours continued to hound Olympic champion Luo Xuejuan despite her retirement from competitive swimming. She opened her new blog at Sina Sports with a message that she's back and many readers interpreted it to mean she's back from retirement. Words of her return to the pool started to spread on the net, in the papers and to China's Head Coach Zhang Yadong and the CSA ... Luo Xuejuan subsequently quelled rumours of her comeback using the message title in her latest post.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

Japan:

Olympic champion Kosuke Kitajima suffered an injury in his left leg during training on 21st July this year. He'll have to recuperate for three weeks and hence will miss the centralised training camp at Cheju, South Korea. Kitajima recently appeared on television to promote a men's shaving brand -- Gillette, and he also revealed he'll do a full-body shave for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In Kitajima's absence, the other 2004 Olympic champion Ai Shibata and silver medalist Takayashi Yamamoto have departed for their training camp in South Korea from 3rd Aug to 17th Aug. Shibata and Yamamoto will lead the Japanese national swim team for one of their target meet this year, the Japan Open, scheduled at the end of this month from 21st Aug to 24th Aug.

China:

After completing their three-week altitude training camps, the Chinese swim team have returned to Beijing and will start preparing for several international meets and a time trials within the team. On 29th July, Chinese coaches travelled to Dalian to meet up with the French team which were training there. They also interacted with the Japanese team a few days back and discussed how to elevate Asian swimming to the next level. The Chinese national team has further trimmed down the number of swimmers to around 70, from the original 170+ when the team first formed last year to prepare for the 2008 Olympics.

August is a busy month for the team; Xu Yanwei, Zhu Yingwen, Pang Jiaying etc will head to Bangkok, Thailand for the World University Games on 5th Aug; most other national team members will swim at the Chinese Invitational from 9th Aug to 11th Aug; all the top swimmers in China will join most of the international elite at the Japan Open in Chiba, Japan from 21st Aug to 24th Aug. The Japan Open will also serve as a target meet for the Chinese team.
