Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

China:

After a disappointing first day of competition at the China Invitational where none of the swimmers reach the Olympic A standard, Zhou Jiawei (CHN) soothed the edge for the swim team on Day 2 with a new Asian record. He bettered both the continental record and the A standard in the men's 100m butterfly event with a time of 52.19 seconds. Zhou Jiawei had set a new Chinese record at the National University Games last month which was slightly off the previous mark held by Takashi Yamamoto.

His coach Luo Zhaoying said, "We're confident of getting this record before the meet. After the National University Games at Guangzhou, we had very little time to prepare before coming here. I told Jiawei to endure the three training sessions between the two meets which will help him to reach the A standard."

Even though it wasn't the start of the year, the Chinese swim team have resolved to bounce back from their mediocre performances at the Melbourne World Championships and swim faster at the Japan Open this month.

Thailand (World University Games)

Takashi Tomiyama (JPN) and Zhang Xin (CHN) took silver and bronze medals in the men's 100m butterfly and women's 400m IM on Day 4.

400m Freestyle
8. Yasunori Mononobe (JPN) 3:56.38

5. Junichi Miya****a (JPN) 54.94

Japan:

The Japan International Swim Meet ended with Japanese swimmers erasing two Asian records in the men's relay races (4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley). There were also three swims which came very close -- Park Tae Hwan's 400m free, Ryosuke Irie's 200m backstroke and Ai Shibata's 800m freestyle. Olympic champion Kosuke Kitajima (JPN) was the top Asian performer of the meet, winning three gold medals.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

Japanese swimmers stayed in great shape after the Japan Invitational last month, producing several fine swims at local meets. Hisayoshi Sato erased the men's 100m freestyle Asian record in 48.91 secs (50m split: 23.64) and became the first Asian male swimmer to swim under 49 secs in this event. He had recorded 49.22 secs at the Japan Invitational and a relay split of 47.9 secs in the men's medley relay final. Other than the continental record, Sato also swam a PB of 1:48.77 (100m split: 51.75) to take the men's 200m freestyle title and later splitted 48.60 secs in the freestyle relay.

100m freestyle runner-up Takurou Fujii timed a PB of 49.95 to break 50 secs for the first time and also excelled in the 200m IM where he won in 1:59.92, very close to the Asian record. He followed up his good performances in the individual events with a butterfly relay split of 51.75 secs in the medley relay final, half a second faster than Yamamoto's split for the Asian record set at the Japan Invitational.

Megumi Taneda slashed her previous PB of 2:25.45 set last month by more than a second to win the women's 200m breaststroke in a new Japanese record of 2:23.85 (100m split: 1:09.78). Runner-up Nanaka Tamura also went under 2:25 with her 2:24.88 (100m split: 1:10.01). Tamura reversed the placings in the 100m breaststroke final where she timed a PB of 1:07.61. Double Asian Games gold-medalist Yurie Yano was again victorious in her pet events -- 200m fly (2:09.69) and 800m freestyle (8:31.57).

At the 2007 Summer Nationals, Japan Invitational champion Ryosuke Irie won convincingly in the men's 200m backstroke with a time of 1:57.50, just 0.33 secs off the Asian record and 0.2 secs off his PB. He also took the 100m race in 54.82 secs and led-off the medley relay with a time of 54.85 secs.

There were also some eye-catching swims from junior swimmers such as Shiho Sakai who set a new high school record of 1:00.91 in the women's 100m backstroke, Tomoyo Fukuda's 2:10.87 in the women's 200m backstroke, Kazuki Ohbayashi's high school record of 53.59 in the men's 100m butterfly and Japan Invitational finalist Natsuki Akiyama's 2:09.69 in the women's 200m butterfly.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

China:

Another Olympic selection trials commences tonight, starting with the heats of w400IM, m200fr, w50br, w200fly, m100br, w100ba, m4x100fr, w4x200fr. Other than an injured Qi Hui, China's top swimmers will attend this meet and strive to reach Olympic A standards. In the men's events, there're still many slots to fill, especially in the freestyle sprints, backstroke and breaststroke. In the women's events, only the 200m freestyle has no qualifier yet, which is surprising considering this event has traditionally been one of their strongest.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

China:

Three female swimmers struck the Olympic 'A' target at the Day 1 evening heats of China's Olympic selection trials held in Chongqing of Sichuan province.

Japan Invitational finalist Li Xuanxu led qualifiers with her 4:44.76 in the women's 400m IM. World University Games bronze medalist Chen Yanyan joined Zhao Jing and Xutian Longzi in China's Olympic A-standard club in the women's 100m back, with a PB of 1:01.45 in the heats; Zhao Jing and Xutian Longzi had pulled out of this meet earlier, leaving Chen Yanyan as title favourite tomorrow.

Liu Zige, who set a PB of 2:09.60 in the heats at China's Olympic selection trials in May but lost in the final, once again improved her PB to 2:09.45 in the heats of this selection trials.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

China: Olympic Selection Trials

The first two days of swimming ushered in a slew of young talent though the results weren't particularly impressive. 13 year-old Li Xuanxu repeated victory in the women's 400m IM with a time of 4:43.18. However, after the race, a sullen Xuanxu bemoaned her failure to match her expectations which certainly demanded much more than a 4:43. 17 year-old Zhang Chen placed second in 4:44.28, which was another Olympic qualifying time for her.

19 year-old Shi Feng emerged to take the men's 100m butterfly title in 52.61 seconds and raced within Olympic A standard in both heats and final. 200m butterfly Worlds runner-up Wu Peng had to settle for silver in a time of 53.13 seconds. 16 year-old Sun Yang, who had threatened Zhang Lin's dominance in men's distance freestyle at Nationals in May, triumphed in the 400m freestyle with a PB of 3:50.19. The women's 800m freestyle were dominated by a trio of teenagers from Guangdong -- 14 year-old You Meihong set a PB to win in 8:36.24, finishing ahead of another 14 year-old Yan Fan and 13 year-old Yu Xin.

Chinese veterans hadn't got much to cheer about for the past two days but Pang Jiaying was reasonably pleased with her 54.50 effort in the women's 100m freestyle, which was also a PB. Ouyang Kunpeng easily collected another national title in the men's 100m backstroke but his time of 55.66 was nowhere near his best. He had modified his strokes slightly after the Asian Games last year and is still currently fine-tuning his techniques in competition.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)

China : Olympic Selection Trials

Days 3 and 4 of swimming remained soaked in mediocrity, with scarcely a wave in the pool despite occasional ripples from a handful. Not even a full moon on Chinese Lantern Festival could rouse the swimmers to any heights. Distance freestyle champion Yang Jieqiao finished outside 4:10 in the women's 400m freestyle; Asian Games champion Chen Zuo failed to dip below 50 secs in the men's 100m freestyle; Asian record holder Gao Chang was more than a second off her best in the women's 50m backstroke and the Chinese national relay team was even disqualified in the women's 4x100m freestyle final.

Some of those who delivered satisfactory results were Jiao Liuyang, fourth in the women's 200m butterfly at 2007 World Championships, and Chen Yanyan, who added another Olympic A standard swim in the women's 200m backstroke to her 100m backstroke PB prior. Jiao secured two gold medals in the 100m butterfly and 200m IM events, both winning times within A standards.

China Sports Weekly earlier cited an insider source who claimed the reasons for the swimmers' dull performances were fatigue from competing at consecutive meets, strategic move to conserve energy for the upcoming City Games which promises similar types of rewards as China National Games and mandatory attendance for top swimmers, many of whom had already qualified for Olympic selection at previous trials.

Credibility of this source became plain as print, with each race confirming what the swimmers and other coaches could not deny. With nothing spectacular to cheer for, press reports on this meet had mostly drifted to inflate statuses of young champions such as Li Xuanxu and You Meihong, with hopes of them achieving glory next year.
