Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
China: Olympic Selection Trials
After a few days of dismal performances at this Olympic Selection Trials, naturally optimistic Head Coach Zhang Yadong rested his hopes on Wu Peng and Pang Jiaying to shine on the final day, and perhaps also on rookie Shi Feng to surprise.
Wu Peng, who had lost to Shi Feng twice in the 100m races and again in the 200m butterfly heats, wasn't about to relinquish his crown against his main impediment in the men's 200m butterfly final. He stamped his authority throughout the race and convincingly retained his title, albeit in a disappointing 1:58. Shi Feng, who had swum a PB of 1:58 in the evening heats, surprisingly ended last in this race.
The Olympic A standard beckoned in the women's 200m freestyle final for Pang Jiaying and others. Being the only women's event with no Olympic 'A' qualifier for the Chinese team so far and having clocked a PB in the 100m freestyle earlier, circumstances behooved Pang Jiaying to summon all her reserves for a go at selection. She succeeded with a time of 1:58.34, just 0.39 secs off her PB set at China National Games in 2005, and received a deserved pat on the back from Zhang Yadong. An increasingly worried Zhang had to admit the yield at this meet was disappointing, to put it mildly, and they're still a long way from the world's best.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
India: (World Military Games)
Yang Li set a new World and Asian record of 28.09 secs in the women's 50m backstroke at the World Military Games. She also took the 100m backstroke title with a PB of 1:01.34, which elevated her to the group of frontrunners seeking Olympic qualification in this event for China. After the race, Yang Li said her previous best time was 28.78 secs and this record-breaking swim had increased her confidence immensely. She represented the People's Army team in 2005 China National Games and led-off the winning medley relay team.
China:
The much awaited City Games, for Chinese swimmers at least, will launch with evening heats today at Wuhan City. This meet serves as a parade of China's top junior swimmers and possibly, a conduit through to the main event next year for those who make a breakthrough across the next few days.
Many National Team swimmers such as Wu Peng, Zhao Jing, Yang Jieqiao, Zhang Enjian and Jiao Liuyang etc, who qualify under the age requirements, will participate and some have made the City Games their target meet for this time of the year. Age requirements for the City Games are -- those born before 1st Jan 1989 for boys and those born before 1st Jan 1990 for girls; each team is allowed four exceptions each, whom are born between 1st Jan 1987 and 31st Dec 1988 for boys and between 1st Jan 1988 and 31st Dec 1989 for girls.
China: (From Sohu Sports)
Several National Team swimmers will venture to foreign soil soon. Zhang Lin will travel to Queensland, Australia to train for two months under Grant Hackett's coach. Others joining him include Chen Yanyan and Xin Tong. Wu Peng, who had mentioned for the past few months about a training stint in USA, will not be making the trip afterall.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
China (City Games Day 1):
Japan Invitational finalist Li Xuanxu dominated the women's 400m IM final with a PB of 4:37.56, which was nearly a second faster than her 4:38.54 set in May. She took the lead after the 200m mark and pulled away from her challengers in the breaststroke leg. Yu Xin took the silver medal in 4:41.32, slightly off her PB of 4:40.9. Liu Weijia commanded the race in the men's 400m IM to win in a PB of 4:17.86, under the Olympic A standard and the second fastest time ever in this event for the Chinese.
China (City Games Day 2):
14 year-old national champion You Meihong successfully deflected an ambush from 13 year-old newcomer Song Wenyuan to claim the women's 400m freestyle gold medal in 4:07.80, slicing around 3.3 seconds off her PB set last month. Song was the fastest qualifier in the heats with a PB of 4:10.68 and threatened an upset in the final with her comparatively outstanding stroke-length. Asian Games champion Yang Jieqiao, who made a breakthrough two years ago at the China National Games, submerged amidst the throng of 13 to 15 year-olds, managing only fifth place in 4:13.19.
Xie Zhi came very close to the Chinese national record of 1:01.76 in the men's 100m breaststroke, with a PB of 1:01.81. The top three placings in the women's 100m butterfly final went to 200m butterfly World Championship finalist Jiao Liuyang (59.67), East Asian Games medalist Huang Xiaotong (59.94) and Asian Games finalist Deng Biying (59.97).

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
China (City Games Day 3):
With a rapidly rising challenge from Yang Li who set a 50m backstroke World Record last week and looming threats from domestic rivals Xutian Longzi and Chen Yanyan, Asian Champion Zhao Jing appeared anxious to deliver an extra punch in her quest for an Olympic berth in the women's 100m backstroke. She broke away from the field with a fluid underwater start, and maintained the lead till the end to win comfortably in 1:01.47, although it was visibly obvious she was expecting a much faster time.
After suffering a shock defeat at the hands of 15 year-old Sun Yang in the 400m freestyle yesterday, Japan Invitational silver medalist Zhang Enjian was eager to prove himself in his pet event. He controlled his pace with a consistent lead of around 0.3 second for the first 150m in the final of the men's 200m freestyle, before storming to the wall to win in 1:49.22, more than 1.7 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.
Liu Xiaoyu showed her national title earned in July this year at Chinese University Games wasn't a fluke. She swam a PB of 1:08.86 in the women's 100m breaststroke and was all smiles after realising she had won the gold medal.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
China (City Games Day 4):
The highlight of Day 4 was the women's 200m IM where Li Xuanxu clawed her way to victory after trailing more than a second at the 100m mark.Having suffered a string of defeats at the hands of Xuanxu in recent meets and in the 400m IM on Day 1, short-course World Championship finalist Zhang Xin gave a trifle more of an effort in this 200m IM showdown. She dived in swiftly, flew to the wall in 28.2 secs, extended the lead in the backstroke leg and held on to her lead in the breaststroke leg. However, with Xuanxu gaining on her in the freestyle leg with a sudden burst of speed, Zhang Xin tightened and slowed down which allowed Xuanxu to pass her in the final metres. Li Xuanxu clocked a PB of 2:13.98 whilst misfortune struck twice for Zhang Xin -- her results nullified following her disqualification.
Wu Peng, the biggest name of the meet, wasn't eligible to attend this City Games by age requirements but was selected using the double-exception rule. Without much competition, he cruised to a 1:57.32 in the men's 200m butterfly final for his first triumph in Wuhan. After the race, Wu Peng revealed he'll take a break from competition and will target the Asian record at Olympic selection trials in March next year.
Undaunted by the reputation of pre-race favourite Tang Yi, who had medalled in several international meets this year, Zhu Qianwei kept within striking distance of early leader Tang Yi till the last 50m in the women's 200m freestyle final. She flung herself into a ferocious sprint of under 30 secs to touch the wall slightly ahead of Tang Yi and 400m freestyle runner-up Song Wenyuan. A jubilant Qianwei admitted she hadn't expected to win and this gold medal came as a pleasant surprise.
Following the Olympic schedule, the swimming events of this City Games will similarly pause and resume after a day of rest.
To be continued...

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
China : (City Games Day 5)
Still suffering from flu symptoms which had plagued her for more than a month, World Championship finalist Jiao Liuyang adjusted her strategy for the women's 200m butterfly final. She chose to stay with the early leaders until the final turn, where she grabbed the lead and sprinted to the finish. 17 year-old Jiao Liuyang clocked a strong 2:08.18 and won by more than a second. Gong Jie came in second with a PB of 2:09.21 whilst China National Games champion Huang Xiaotong placed third in 2:09.31, her fastest since 2005 National Games. In the men's 200m breaststroke final, 100m breaststroke champion Xie Zhi seized the early lead and held on to win in 2:14.75.
China : (City Games Day 6)
14 year-old Tang Yi compensated for her loss in the 200m freestyle with a 55.41 victory in the women's 100m freestyle, which improved her PB by 0.4 secs. All three medalists went under 56 seconds -- 12 year-old Li Zhesi (55.74 secs) and Wang Junyao (55.83 secs). Tang Yi had fallen sick after arriving in Wuhan and was even hospitalised the day before.
Sun Ye chalked another win in her pet event, the women's 200m breaststroke, with a PB of 2:27.09. After the race, Sun Ye merrily celebrated her performance, which according to her, was better than expected because she didn't prepare specifically for this meet. Zhang Xin, who was disqualified on Day 4 in the 200m IM, was second in 2:28.44 whilst another 12 year-old Liu Hongjiao claimed the bronze medal in 2:28.97. Liu Weijia excelled in each stroke of the men's 200m IM race to win in a PB of 2:01.19.
The 800m freestyle heats appear to be building up for a very close and exciting final indeed. 400m freestyle champion You Meihong led qualifiers with a 8:32.11 whilst IM phenom Li Xuanxu guest starred in this event with a PB of 8:32.99. Yang Jieqiao, top Chinese swimmer currently in this event (8:26), placed fourth to qualify.
Singapore (World Cup Short-Course) :
Tao Li (SIN) set a PB of 57.80 in the women's 100m butterfly, with Olympic Champion Natalie Coughlin (USA) blazing to a 56.35 beside her.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
China: (City Games Day 7)
After winning her second title in the women's 200m IM earlier, Li Xuanxu had declared her tasks for this meet officially over since her final event, the 800m freestyle, wasn't a target event. Apparently not. She landed the leading role in the 800m freestyle final by blowing her opposition away with a PB of 8:27.65 for her third City Games gold medal.
Right from the start, Li Xuanxu and 400m freestyle champion You Meihong set off with a punishing pace which only 400m IM runner-up Yu Xin and 800m freestyle May Nationals runner-up Yang Fan could keep up with. The leading duo jostled for the lead in the first 200m and thereafter, Li Xuanxu was able to stay a stroke ahead of You Meihong.
After 420m, Li Xuanxu continued her relentless attack through the waters with a style similar to double Olympic Champion Brooke Bennett (USA) whilst You Meihong started to tire and drop to fourth behind Yu Xin and Yang Fan. That order remained till the last 50m where Yang Fan pulled away from Yu Xin and tried to chase down Li Xuanxu but it was a little too late. Yang Fan had to settle for the silver medal but was still rewarded with a new PB of 8:29.65. Yu Xin, You Meihong and Yang Jieqiao timed 8:31.34, 8:32.10 and 8:39.09 respectively.
In the men's 50m freestyle final, Cai Li shrugged off his 100m freestyle disappointment with a powerful dash to the wall for a PB of 22.76 secs. The other two medalists also set PBs and went under 23 secs -- 100m freestyle champion Lu Zhiwu and Shi Yang. Shi Feng repeated his victory against Wu Peng in the men's 100m butterfly by clocking 52.86 secs to Wu Peng's 53.26 secs.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
China: (City Games Day 9)
The final "day" of competition at the Wuhan City Games has arrived after nine "2008 Olympic days", i.e. ten normal days, and one day of rest in between. There were two tightly contested individual events -- the longest for the boys and the shortest for the girls.
12 year-old Li Zhesi, who's the women's 100m freestyle runner-up, faced off against the 100m backstroke champion Zhao Jing in the 50m freestyle final. Both clocked PBs on their way to the top -- 25.40 secs for Li Zhesi and 25.46 secs for Zhao Jing. Two other swimmers also went below 25 secs.
Wang Junyao led the pack in Lane 5, but Zhao Jing edged ahead at the 30m mark in Lane 4 . Li Zhesi in Lane 3 however had the strongest finish, overtaking Zhao Jing at the wall. After winning the race, Li Zhesi raised her fist to show her delight. She later went on to anchor Team Shenyang for another gold medal in the 4x100m medley relay. It was reported that her father was a former Liaoning Province football player and her mother was also a former volleyball player at the provincial level. Her aunt Xu Yongjiu was even more prominent in China -- a world champion of Track & Field's walk events in the 80s.
In the men's 1500m freestyle final, Sun Yang and Zu Lijun shook off their competitors from the start and were evenly matched for most part of the race. Sun Yang attempted in vain to shake Zu Lijun off a couple of times but he upped the pace another notch towards the final 100m and galloped away with the bell ringing behind him for a 15:21.41 victory. The two medley relay finals on the last night of this City Games were won by Guangzhou and Shenyang, though marred by several disqualifications, before the metaphorical drapes descended officially on a long meet.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
Macau: At the 2nd Asian Indoor Games, which concluded last week, several swimmers produced some good short-course performances. Sherry Tsai Hiu Wai (HKG) clocked 27.96 secs to lead off Hong Kong's winning team in the women's 4x50m medley relay. She also swam 28.08 and 1:00.18 in the two individual backstroke finals. Zhou Jiawei, long-course Asian record holder in the men's 100m butterfly, claimed four gold medals in the 50m butterfly (23.97), 100m butterfly (51.91), the 4x50m medley relay (23.19 split) and the 4x100m medley relay (51.42 split).
South Korea: World champion Park Tae Hwan set two Asian short-course records at the FINA World Cup series in Sydney -- 1:43.38 in the men's 200m freestyle and 3:39.99 in the 400m freestyle.

Re: Asian Swimming News Updates ( Articles and Interviews from China, Japan, South Korea etc)
South Korea: Park Tae Hwan just kept rolling along at the FINA World Cup series in Berlin, with a repeat of his record-breaking efforts in the men's 200m and 400m freestyle.
Park advanced his 400m record on Day 1 by an impressive three seconds -- from 3:39.99 to 3:36.68. He then produced another bewildering effort on Day 2. After winning the 1500m freestyle in 14:39.39, Park "added sauce to the geese" with a world-leading time of 1:42.22 in the 200m freestyle -- a second drop from the Asian record he set in Sydney.
