posticon 2006 Asia Swimming Championships results

China's Head Coach Zhang Yadong emphasized at the 7th Asian Swimming Championships (Swimming and Synchronised Swimming) their squad may be young but the swimmers are not second-rated, they have all performed very well at last year's China Games and are top swimmers in their respective events. "This crop of swimmers is relatively younger than the one we sent to the recent Japan Open. They are less experienced and their names may be unfamiliar to most, but they are still top notch swimmers in China."

Ouyang Kunpeng, men's backstroke Asian record holder, viewed this championship as a preparatory meet; his target meets in 2006 are the short-course Worlds at Shanghai and the 15th Asian Games at Doha. His team-mate Zhou Jiawei, men's 50m butterfly Asian record holder, is recovering from a shoulder injury and flu. "I still need some time for a full recovery, hopefully before the Shanghai Worlds," said Zhou.

Summary of Day 1 Finals

China dominated the first day of 7th Asia Swimming Championship, collecting six out of seven titles and setting meet records in each event they won (including two non-Olympic events).

Xie Zhi (CHN) won the men's 100m breaststroke final in 1:01.93 and became only the second swimmer from China to go under 1:02 in this event. His time also bettered a 14 year-old meet record of 1:02.56 held by Akira Hayashi (JPN). Zhang Xin (CHN) and Yu Rui (CHN), women's 400m IM medalists at last year's China Games, timed 4:43.00 and 4:44.06 to take top two spots, erasing the previous meet record of 4:46.09 held by former world champion Chen Yan (CHN). East Asian Games silver medalist Nam Yoo Sun (KOR) took the bronze in 4:51.94.

Hannah Wilson (HKG) stunned the top two seeds from China by winning the women's 100m freestyle title despite a slower entry time. Another meet record came from Yu Chenglong (CHN) in the men's 200m freestyle final where he won in 1:50.67, ahead of his compatriot Qu Jingyu (CHN). Bryan Tay (SIN) earned the first medal for the host country with a time of 1:53.26. Team China also shaved 0.08 seconds off their championship record in the women's 4x200m freestyle relay.
